The Nigerian Army has dismissed 290 soldiers for allegedly refusing to fight the Boko Haram insurgents. Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana disclosed this Thursday.

According to him, “I have just confirmed that a total of 290 soldiers were dismissed yesterday by the authorities of the Nigerian Army. The letters of dismissal were distributed in Jos, Plateau State and Ibadan, Oyo State. Before the dismissal, the soldiers were subjected to orderly room trial.

“Even though they pleaded not guilty to the charges of cowardice and failure to fight the Boko Haram sect, the dismissed soldiers were not tried by any court-martial in line with the provisions of the Armed Forces Act. It would be recalled that the Nigerian Army also sacked another batch of 200 soldiers in similar circumstances in December last year.”

Falana added that “apart from the deliberate refusal of the military authorities to respect the fundamental right of the dismissed soldiers to fair hearing guaranteed by the Constitution, the punishment meted out to them cannot be justified since the Federal Government failed to equip the armed forces at the material time. Indeed, the belated onslaught launched against the satanic Boko Haram sect by the Nigerian Army has been attributed to the military hardware recently acquired by the government.

“As the soldiers are ill-equipped to handle the weapons the military authorities have admitted that ‘military instructors’ have been engaged from South Africa to train them.

“In the light of the foregoing, the authorities of the Nigerian Army should annul the illegal letters and recall the dismissed soldiers without any delay. In the alternative, a programme should be designed for the rehabilitation of the dismissed soldiers. Otherwise, many of them may be driven to criminality since they had been given military training at the expense of the nation.”

Come on guys!

Many citizens never realised how ill-equipped as a result of rampant corruption our so-called army actually was, until these soldiers let the cat out of d bag. Thanks to their revelations, our eyes were opened to the fact that, funds meant for purchase of arms and soldiers' upkeep (including tns as basic as feeding), were diverted by the same top commanders that sent them to the war front almost empty handed...practically on suicide missions!

Soldiers had to offer bribes in-order to get extra rounds of ammunition. Yes, it was dat bad...i can attest to it!

These soldier heroes had signed up to die for this country...they never signed up to b used for corruption-induced suicide missions.

We owe dem a debt of gratitude for their revelations...and the positive turnaround it has brought into the fight against boko haram.

how can someone sign up to die for a country and yet, when suicide mission is upon them, they change stories?! they are a disgrace to the army and should not wear an uniform. whether they had knives or even broken bottles, thats their JOB/DUTY and they should do what they are instructed to do by their superior. if they dont then they have nothing to do in the army.
good riddance to bad rubbish!

the employment clearly states that they should/must do what they are ordered to do, so long as it aint anything criminal or against the law..... so that is/was their duties and they should have performed them.

you cant join the army and then complain about the ideology of the army.

many of these people only want the uniform (join the army) so they can form road block and steal innocent people!
