The Jigawa State Ministry of Health on Monday said it has trained 650 community health workers on the management of Neglected Tropical Diseases in the state. The State Eye Care Programme Coordinator, Dr Abubakar Abdurrahman, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Dutse. He said the exercise, conducted in collaboration with an NGO, Health and Development Support Programme, had participants from the 26 local government areas in the state. Abdurrahman said the the training was focussed on updating the knowledge and skills of health workers at community level to support the treatment and control of the diseases. He added that it was also to ensure delivery of effective strategies to rural communities for the prevention and control of the NTDs. The coordinator said the health workers, who were divided into four teams, were trained for seven days. He reaffirmed the commitment of the government and the supporting partners to eliminate NTDs in the state before the year 2020. Abdurrahman commended health officers in various communities for their cooperation towards the successful implementation of the programme.
