The U17 Women National Team, Flamingoes have shown a rich vein of form as preparations hit new gear for the 5th FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup starting in Jordan on September 30.

Coach Bala Nikyu’s girls displayed ferocious form with three wins in three successive friendly matches in Abuja between Tuesday and Saturday.

On Tuesday, Sure Babes FC of Ilorin were the victims as Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, the team’s top scorer, hit two goals in a 4-0 win at the NFF/FIFA Goal Project pitch, in a match watched by NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, NFF Technical Director, Mr. Bitrus Bewarang and Assistant Director (Technical), Siji Lagunju.

Cynthia Aku and Patricia Innocent got the other goals.

On Thursday, the Flamingoes pipped Confluence Queens of Kogi 1-0 at the same venue, thanks to Cynthia Aku, who slotted in after the Queens’ goaltender failed to deal appropriately with a fierce shot by Captain Ajibade.

Against QFL (Queens Football League) All-Stars on Saturday, the Flamingoes went goal-wire, hitting the opposition 8-1. Ajibade was on song with a hat–trick, while Folashade Ijamilusi and Chidinma Okeke hit a brace each, and Cynthia Aku scored once.

Coach Nikyu said: “These matches have shown us exactly where we are, and we will continue to work on our weak areas. Our target is to ensure that the girls play as a team, have good control of the ball and achieve better coordination on the field.

“We are also working on their confidence level. They need to approach each game with a level of confidence, without under-rating any team. Certainly, we are going to play more friendly matches before the World Cup.”

Nigeria will tackle Brazil, England and 2008 champions Korea DPR in the group stage at the 5th FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, taking place in Jordan on September 30 to October 21, 2016.

The Flamingoes’ first match is against Brazil on 1st October, Nigeria’s Independence Day.

Flamingoes forced to goalless draw by Nasarawa
Amazons FC
Abuja - The National under 17 female football team,
the Flamingoes, on Friday, played a goalless draw
with Nasarawa Amazons Football Club of Lafia in a
friendly match.
The match played at the astro-turf pitch of the FIFA
Goal Project at the package B of the National
stadium in Abuja could not produce any goal.
The two teams displayed brilliant performances in
the first half but failed to utilise their scoring
chances.
On the resumption of the second half, both teams
played very well but could not registered any goal in
the game.
Speaking to journalists after the match, the head
coach of Flamingoes, Bala Nikyu, said he was not
expecting to see many mistakes at this stage.

"We can never be hundred percent sure of what we
have, and after the previous friendly match we made
some correction, after this match I will still correct
some mistakes.
"There were still some mistakes that I am not
expected to see but it is good that I am seeing them
now so that we can work on them.
"Our players performance is above average, I need
to work on their composure on the ball, I want to see
them playing with command and confidence.

Taking the team out of the country for preparation may not be in the dictionary of NFF as the Federation is battling with financial crisis.

They can prepare here in Nigeria and have a fantastic outing at the competition.

There's no financial crisis, rather we have Pinick who is destroying the nation's football. The guy just seems not to know what to do at any time. FIFA must have paid something for the preparation of these girls. I am super sure of that.

I keep saying and saying it, Pinnick is the problem of our football, another name for the man must be "Football retrograder". I totally agreed with you but what do u expect us to do? If the girls fail woefully, then the so called NFF will have the blame.

It's high time we have a good football management. The earlier we have a new FA, the better for our football.

One thing am sure of is with all the hurdles, The girls will still perform brilliantly.!

This is the problem with Nigerian football, when they should be graduating to the super falcons, they'll rather keep playing several age grade tournaments. Each of them keep playing twice at the u-20 and u-17 level. Even Rashidat Ajibade, are we saying she was 14year old when she represented us the last time? Though she looks very young sha.

NIGERIA'S FLAMINGOES JET OUT TO U17
WORLD CUP MONDAY

Nigeria’s Flamingoes will jet out for the FIFA U17 World Cup in Jordan on Monday, officials have disclosed.

The women’s U17s build-up for Jordan 2016 has been limited to test matches against local sides in Abuja.

A planned international warm-up against fellow
qualifiers Ghana or Cameroon did not see the light of day.

The Flamingoes, under coach Bala Nikyu, will
open their campaign on Nigeria’s Independence
Day, October 1, against Brazil.

They will also tackle England and North Korea in
the first round.

The Nigeria girls have reached the quarterfinals at the last two World Cups.

BELGIUM BASED NIGERIA INVITEE VALERIE
PROVOKING MEMORIES OF FALCONS LEGEND
MERCY AKIDE

18 year old Nigeria female national under-20
invitee Valerie Awelewa is drawing comparison
with former Super Falcons forward and female
football legend Mercy Akide.

She is in the list of 30 players called up to camp
by coach Peter Devdevbo ahead of Nigeria’s
campaign at the Under-20 World Cup billed for
Papua New Guinea in November later this year.

Followers of the exploits of the teen forward
revealed to Owngoalnigeria.com , that she is
every inch like Akide, one of the early stars of
female football in Nigeria judging by her
performances for SK Herkenrode.

Aside their similarity in physical appearance and role on the pitch, Valerie has also got an
intimidating record like Akide, who was
nicknamed Marvelous Mercy due to her goal
scoring abilities.

Last season she scored 18 goals to emerge as one of the top scorers of the female game in Belgium, where she is highly respected by watchers of female football.

Valerie will be hoping to make the Nigeria’s team to the World Youth Championship (Fifa U-20 Women world cup) where they are in same group with Spain, Japan and Canada in group B.

Yes, Ajibade is a mid-fielder. Two or three players in the attackers list are also mid-fielders. I watched them playing once, they are great and an offensive team.
