BFM Film Club & Black British Heritage Pan-London BHM Programme 2pm, Sunday 1st October 2006 Institute of Contemporary Arts www.ica.org.uk / 020 7930 3647 Lion Mountains : A Journey Through Sierra Leone ’s History Dir: Louis Buckley This Documentary is about a journey to Sierra Leone , West Africa, seen through the eyes of a 25-year-old Jamaican English man called Louis Buckley who was born and grew up in England . After a long desire to visit the continent of Africa and learn more about his history he finally decides to visit the country of Sierra Leone , as it was the head of British West Africa in days of the Empire. Sierra Leone is rich in natural resources, yet today its recorded to be one of the poorest countries in the world. Louis arrives in Sierra Leone while it’s recovering from an 11-year civil war, which devastates the whole country. He heads out to discover first hand about the countries past, offering a unique narrative and perspective. The question is what happened in the days of the empire and how do this country get to this point? Interspersed with an urban hip-hop & reggae fused soundtrack and stunning visuals of the landscape The Lion Mountains looks at pre-colonial Sierra Leone; the beginning of European and African trade; the effect of Western imperialism and colonial rule. Screening will be followed by a Q&A with the Director. Duration: 58 minutes Language: English/ Creole, English Subtitles Certificate: PG 4.30pm, Sunday 1st October Institute of Contemporary Arts www.ica.org.uk / 020 7930 3647 Black Survivors of the Holocaust Dir: David Okuefuna This unique film uncovers the torture and murder of Black Germans in the Third Reich through a profoundly distressing experience in Nazi concentration camps. Piecing together experiences of the survivors and the descendants of victims, together with never seen before archive materials, Moise's film documents a moving, if brutal, tale of medical experiments involving sterilisation, torture and gruesome death in the concentration camps. Until recently, few would have even believed that Blacks and mixed-race people lived in Hitler's Germany let alone underwent the horrors which some, luckily, survived to tell in the film. It is a revelation that shattered the conspiratorial silence of the German authorities. The film has been shown in more than twenty countries and won four international awards including the 1997 New York Festivals Unesco Award. Screening will be followed by a Q&A with the Producer. This programme is being held in conjunction with the Young Professional Cameroonian Network. She leads the Axé Opó Afonjá Candomblé community, which was founded in 1910. In the film, Mãe Stella explains the history of Candomblé in Bahia as well as the matriarchal system of power created and controlled by the women who practice these traditions. The film also pays tribute to Ruth Landes, the North American anthropologist, who went to Bahia in the 1930s to do research. There she was surprised by the spiritual, cultural and economic power held by women in Candomblé. She published her findings in the book The City of Women in 1947. Her thoughts and impressions are illustrated in this sensitive documentary by images of popular festivities which celebrate African spiritual traditions, and the stunning natural beauty of the city of Salvador .
