I love this topic, but i disagree with the OP on the aspect of south west states not collecting allocations from FG, the region currently generates over 80% of the government's non oil revenue, from all indications Nigeria will progressively depend on non oil revenue more than oil revenue in the future, there fore it will be totally unwise for the southwest that contributes the buck of the non oil revenue to stand akimbo and look on while regions that contribute absolutely nothing like the North and South East are sharing the largesse.

Ondo Wins London Chocolate
Awards

 May 9, 2015
The Cocoa Revolution Project of the Ondo
State government has received a big boost
with its product clinching the Chocolate
Silver Awards at the just concluded
Academy of Chocolate Awards in London.
According to a statement by the state’s
Commissioner for Information, Hon. Kayode
Akinmade, the State Governor, Dr
Olusegun Mimiko, was represented at the
Award presentation where the state’s 70
percent Chocolate bar won in the silver
category, by the Special Adviser to the
Governor on Agriculture, Engineer Ademola
Olorunfemi .
The award ceremony which took place at
the Fortnum &Mason Piccadilly, London,
attracted all major cocoa/chocolate and
confectionary industry stakeholders across
the globe.
Ondo State was mentioned at the event as
the only chocolate award winner from West
Africa, which produces 75 percent of global
cocoa bean output.
The Academy of Chocolate Awards, now
taking place for the seventh time, is a
highly anticipated event in the international
chocolate calendar. The 2015 awards
received a record number of entries with
over 500 products. As a result, more judges
were involved in the jury panel and the
judging, which took place at Westminster
Kingsway College, was extended to five
days.
Chaired by globally respected wine expert,
Charles Metcalfe, judges included chocolate
experts and buyers, pastry chefs, food
professionals and food journalists.
A Washington DC based outfit, SPAGnVOLA
had earlier in the year presented the Ondo
Chocolate bar for the competition which
has fetched the state a silver.
Chairman of Ondo State Cocoa Revolution
Implementation Committee, Dr Jibayo
Oyebade, had mentioned before now that
cocoa produced in the state for chocolate
production, had received world certification
and recognition.
Oyebade had told newsmen in Akure, that
the product had already been presented to
the partnering firm overseas, Cargill Cocoa
and Chocolate firm, Netherland

How much has Nigeria and indeed ondo state earned from the phantom cocoa?
Not very much.
Your award is shallow.
The last time the SW had a budding cocoa industry was in the early 80s.

Dollyak:
The GDP of the entire nation of Nigeria, the largest economy by far in Africa, currently is about N130 trillion naira(about $594 billion US dollars)(Wikipedia, list of African countries by GDP(nominal)). The Southwest, one of the six geopolitical regions of Nigeria, has an estimated GDP of about N67 trillion naira( about $305 billion US dollars), more than half of the GDP of the nation.

By my estimates, the Southwest region was the third largest economy in the continent of Africa n 2014! This must be a shock or a pleasant surprise to many people!

But the governors in the region have not adopted a robust revenue generating strategy to tap into the resource base of the region. Taxation of the poor and lower middle-class people is a bad strategy which does not reflect a global best practice. The poor have a greater propensity to spend than the rich, so a taxation of the poor is counter-productive as it eliminates the boost to the economy that their spending provides.

Taxation of the rich, middle-class, and upper middle-class, but not the poor, is a global best strategy to raise revenues for the operation of government, the provisioning of infrastructures, robust security apparatus, and social security services that benefit everyone: the rich, the poor, and the disadvantaged in society. Fortunately, there are millions of rich people living in the Southwest: naira millionaires, multi-millionaires, billionaires, and trillionaires available to be taxed.

If the governors of the Southwest had adopted a comprehensive income taxation for revenue as their strategy in 2014, they could have raised N13 trillion naira from a progressive income tax range of 0% for the poor, to up to 30% for the rich: ten times more than the N1.3 trillion naira raised last year!

The combined budget-to-GDP ratio of the states in the Southwest in 2014 was abysmally low, about 2% compared to about 40% in many advanced nations of the world. For the sake of argument, a budget that is 40% of the GDP of the Southwest is approximately N25 trillion naira. This is about twice the budget realizable from using a progressive tax bracket of 0% to 30%.

If the enhanced income-tax-based revenues are spent appropriately, the Southwest will become a prosperous region with robust infrastructures, full employment, improved security, and a world-class social security service.

It is widely accepted (on nairaland) that many governors of the Southwest have reasonably performed well. If they had tapped the hidden resources of the region, their performance would have been elevated to outstanding and transformational! We wonder why policies that would have made a difference in the lives of the majority of the people, such as progressive income taxation, had not been vigorously pursued and implemented. Income taxation will also diminish godfatherism and empower the people while swelling the coffers of governments in the region.

With abundant revenues through income taxation, the Southwest will be in a position to stop accepting monthly oil revenue distributions from the center, but be able to partner with Abuja and other state governors in joint projects of mutual benefit that will drive the economic growth of the nation.

The question that must be asked of the governors of the Southwest is this, are they aware that the great book says, for whom much is given much is required?

So much has been given to the region by the grace of God. So much then is required of the Southwest governments. The governors in the Southwest have an obligation not only to take care of the welfare of their residents but to also drive the socio-economic growth of the nation.

In conclusion, to the people of the Southwest, the third largest economy in Africa, ask not what Abuja can do for you, but ask your governors to:

1. Tax the peoples' incomes, a global best practice, using a progressive tax rate from 0% to 30%.

2. Use the revenues from the income tax to fund government operations, build, monitor, and maintain physical, security, health, education, and research infrastructures, and to provide services and social security to the people. As he who pays the piper dictates the tune, politicians will be compelled by the income tax payers to shift their allegiance from godfathers to the people. This will end godfatherism as the dominant factor in politics in the Southwest.

3. Promote exports and the tourism industry.
4. Work cooperatively with the private industry, research and development centers, and the tertiary institutions in the region.

5. Promote regional integration through intra-regional partnerships and engage in mutually beneficial ventures with Abuja and other governors in other regions.

6. Stop accepting the monthly oil distributions from Abuja from 2016, as this is the root of corruption in Nigeria. To curb corruption in the Southwest and elsewhere in Nigeria requires pulling up the root of corruption in Nigeria by ending the shameful exploitation of the minorities in the oil producing states.

Listen, and listen good. The SW has it's fair share of indigenous investors a la Adenuga, Otudeko, Wale Tinubu, Folawiyos, Kessington, Fola Adeola, Eleganza/Okoyas, Subomi-Baloguns, Adelekes, Harry Akande, Otedola, Alakijas e.t.c But we are also open and actively courting FDI, no problem there. That's the problem with you Igbos, you live in a bubble where all starts and ends in the SE -- only SE folks are the only entrepreneurs, the the only importers, the only billionaires, the only traders, e.t.c.. but on a closer look it's all hot air -- fake. Other regions are making strides and doing great and even better.

FDI is a bonus, you idiott.
Most major economies like the US, CHINA, JAPAN are driven by indigenous investments.
Infact, countries like china makes it as a matter of policy to indigenise foreign investments as much as possible.
Foreign investments are fickle.
A little instability and they will disappear.
The strength of the indigenous industries determine the strength of an economy.

Perfect observation

That's why I laugh when government talk of Foreign Investment

The key to economic growth lays with the indigenous investment cool

If Nigeria wants to truely develop then she must not put too much emphasis on foreign investments.
Not too long ago, foreign companies were moving enmass from Nigeria to ghana due to a little instability in the system.
Develop the local industrial capacity as soon as possible.

Indigenous investment rarely move unlike Foreign investment that's run away whenever things are shaken. cool

The Minister of Health, Dr Onyebuchi Chukwu has commended the Ondo State Government for setting the pace in all health programmes especially in the Adolescent and Youth Friendly Health Services in the state. The Minister who was represented by Head, Gender Adolescent, School Health, Elderly Division of the Family Health Department, Abuja, Dr. Ugboko Christopher said the purpose of their visit to the state is to promote the integration of adolescent/youth health services into primary health care facility in the state, which the state had already started. He said: “Ondo State is already prepared for the purpose for which we are here. We simply came to give them additional information and to also fortify their resolve to the direction to which they are going. ‘We are happy that the Primary Healthcare Board in the state is standard, knowing full well that they will adopt what the Adolescent Health Care officer is already doing”. He said the issue of Adolescent and Youth must be structured properly, considering what they are passing through in the country ‘We need to do this, it is important, knowing what the youth and the adolescents are passing through in the country’ he said. Chukwu said Ondo state has already known what to do adding the Federal Government is only partnering with the state to go through the process. Commenting on the development the State’s Commissioner for Information,Hon.Kayode Akinmade said the country must appreciate the significance of its youths both now and in the future. He said there has to be a deliberate effort to ensure that the future of the youth is secured adding that there is the need to integrate them into the system so as to have proper belonging to the society Also speaking, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr.Dayo Adeyanju who described the youth as great assets the country has, said they can also constitute a great challenge if they are not properly managed. According to him, attention has been focused on the tertiary health facilities and emphasised the need to reform our health care system through Primary Health Care.” He also said the youths must be gainfully employed for them to appreciate their integrity and value same. Adeyanju called on stakeholders and all Ministries that there must be synergy among them for the programme to be successful. Posted in: Health

As a neutral observer,I hope Yorubas do not fall for this shallow attempt at addressing issues between Yorubas and Igbos. The truth is that many Igbos hate Yorubas even when they try to deny it.The relationship is similar to Whites vs Blacks. You don't love people who hate you even though you all occupy the same country.Tribalism like racism is something we wish will go away but it will not because the reality is that humans discriminate and hold on tightly to their respective group identities.

More Yorubas need to wake up and smell the coffee for what it is,not what they want it to be.You extend a brotherly hand to Igbos and in turn that is interpreted as you being a coward, lazy, selling your father's land etc.Failure to wake up to the reality of what you all dealing with ,will be a case of you all being subjugated in your own lands.See one of the posters idea of dominating Nigeria. How can that lead to a meaningful co-existence between the tribes?

People rarely give up privileges no matter how much it might oppress others..so the likelihood of you all being able to get back on y'all feet should you all be subjugated will be extremely difficult.Especially knowing how Igbos can be clannish.

Nigeria earns $900m from cocoa export, says Adesina (in 2014)

Nigeria has earned $900 million from local cocoa production, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina has said.
Adesina said the rate of locally produced cocoa grew from 250, metric tonns (Mt) in 2011 to 370, 000 Mt in 2013.

He said a global company, Hersey, is investing $20 million to procure cocoa from over 20, 000 certified cocoa farmers across the country.
On rice production, the minister said with additional 4.3 million Mt, Nigeria is on course to be self sufficient in 2015.

“The cocoa revolution in Nigeria is receiving global attention. Nigeria’s cocoa production grew from 250,000 Mt in 2011 to 370,000 Mt by 2013, and our cocoa exports earned over $900 million.

“Hershey, a global company, has invested $20 million to procure cocoa from over 20,000 certified cocoa farmers.
“We will soon launch the Cocoa Corporation of Nigeria, a privately run commodity board, which will further spur growth and investment in the cocoa sector, including cocoa investment funds to boost local processing and value addition,” Adesina was quoted to have said in a statement in Abuja yesterday.

The minister also said Dansa Foods is committing $35 million to establish tomato processing plants in the country.
According to him, the Federal Government is providing nine million high yielding seedlings to small holder farmers and plantation estates in the country to improve oil palm production.
