Should RADIO BIAFRA be shut down?
by Obinna Aligwekwe

In my honest opinion, I think it should.

I am an ardent student of the history of the Nigeria Civil War. No matter how you spin the story of that war, the igbos and other units that made up the then Biafra, did not deserve the destiny that befell them prior to the commencement of that war. No matter how you blame the officers who were selective in perpetrating the first Coup (Nzeogwu and co), the fact remains that they (the Officers) did not act on behalf of any orchestrated larger group of igbos to dominate Nigeria.

If anything, the igbos were already very prevalent in many critical sectors in the nation at the time. Almost half of the officers' corp (an elite segment of the armed forces) was of Igbo origin. That was the reason why naturally, majority of the coup plotters (even though not all) would be Igbo. It was also for this reason, that the coup was also aborted by Igbo officers as well. Those igbo officers who stopped Nzeogwu, alongside Aguiyi Ironsi, were to loose their lives in the Counter Coup six months later, in a sad process where hundreds of thousands of other igbos who did not even know what an army barracks looked like, would also perish. The process was only halted when it became evident to the rest of Nigeria that the East was ready to carry out its threat of secession.

Nigeria, like any other country that has fought a civil war, lost its innocence the moment the first shot was fired. There will always be groups and minds that will fantasize what the alternative (self actualisation) would have been like, especially if the current arrangement does not seem to be working, and most especially if they have tried it in the past, no matter how fleeting. Its a reality that is prevalent in EVERY country that has fought any kind of war to stay together. I still believe Nigeria can work, I also believe any group has a right to self-determination, and in as much as I believe the group Radio Biafra derives relevance from the failure of the country, its methodology remains a cause for concern.
Preaching hate and superiority leads to an "over-correction" when a "reset" happens. It turns the oppressed into oppressors when tables turn. I am for JUSTICE, not VENGEANCE. It is this over-correction that has seen Israel, a country whose inhabitants suffered immensely under the Nazis in Germany, now become an oppressor bombing Palestinians and sterilising Ethiopian jews. It is this over-correction that led to the Hutus in Rwanda (who had been dominated by Tutsis) slaughter almost a million of their country-men.

There are many non-igbos (even Northerners) who know their history. And many agree the Easterners have been the most unlucky in this Nigerian project (the civil war itself remains the greatest act of marginalisation), but Radio Biafra is not the way to go. If anything, history has shown that the personalities such as the ones that man radio Biafra, when there is no more Nigeria, are likely to take their bitterness down to Clan and village level. Remember the brief war in South Sudan? Yes South Sudan appropriately seceded from Sudan a few years ago. That did not stop the various clans in the new republic from going at each other.

And even if there is a firm belief in self-actualisation, the right of which exists, it can be done peacefully, because lets face it, the perpetrators of those major crimes for which the bitterness exists today are gone, and maybe giving account of their horrible stewardships while on Earth. Any existing grouse should have to do with structure, not peoples.

The English were known centuries ago to have perpetrated horrible crimes against the people of Scotland. Yet, the drive towards the referendum of independence was 100% issue based. It was this attitude that enabled the Scottish see clearly, the workability of the Union. Let that at least be an example for those who deeply want a Biafra in their lifetime, for even though you may not have my support, you will have my respect.

Radio Biafra should not be closed biko, we want another civil war please! This time it would be all or nothing! Finally we shall have access to the sea, The SE would be one state and the different areas like Anambra, Imo etc would be ruled by Emirs. Our children will grow up to called the SE their land....It would be renamed Nyamiri. The Igbo's would be minority in their own land. Please just start the war already!
