Steve Balmer joined Microsoft as an employer and is worth $21bn.

Sherly Sandberg joined Facebook as an employer and is a billionaire.

Marissa Meyer joined Yahoo after years at google as an employer and is a billionaire,

That is only in the tech world.

Close to home Thidjane Thiam from Ivory Coast is current CEO of credit Suisse, and while he may not be top 100 richest list he is very well to do.

Please stop deceiving yourself you must be an entrepreneur to make it in life.

Also you do know many people just want to be able to live good lives and provide for their families, have opportunities etc and are not aiming for top 100 richest list?

There are people who are good entrepreneurs e.g. Richard Branson but who are poor at building those ideas to successful corporations which create more wealth for others. That's where successful business people come in to partner with the entrepreneurs. There is a place for everyone.

Let's take nairaland and facebook for example. Partnering with good business minded people is what makes the difference between the likes of facebook which has grown exponentially, coming up with new products every day and created over 1000 millionaires when it went public to nairaland which started about same time as facebook and whilst Seun may be doing well for himself finacially, there is a lot more scope to make an impact.

Steve Ballmer joined Microsoft on June 11, 1980, and became Microsoft's 30th employee, the first business manager hired by Gates.
Ballmer was initially offered a salary of $50,000 as well as a percentage of ownership of the company. When Microsoft was incorporated in 1981, Ballmer owned 8 percent of the company (is that what you call an employee? he was a part owner of the biz)

Sandberg's executive compensation for FY 2011 was $300,000 base salary plus $30,491,613 in FB shares.[27] According to her Form 3, she also owns 38,122,000 stock options and restricted stock units (worth approx. $1.45 billion as of mid-May 2012) that will be completely vested by May 2022, subject to her continued employment through the vesting date.[28]
Another billionaire as a result of stock options in a coy. not just salaries

Marissa_Mayer is not a billionaire (she is employee no 20 in google though)
Salary $117 million over 5 years;[2] $36.6 million for first six months.[3]
Net worth Increase US$300 million[4]

idjane Thiam (born 29 July 1962)[1] is a French Ivorian BUSINESSMAN and former politician who will become the Chief Executive of Credit Suisse in June 2015.[

Was he an enterpenuer?

He was employee number 30 as you said so he was employed.

The problem is we don't want to spend time building expertise and experience anymore and we all want it now now now.

Even Warren buffet worked after his MBA before starting business based on the experience he developed

Folk Adeola, Tayo Aderjnkkun worked at Cotinental Merchant Bank and developed expertise and experience. Express setting up Gtbank. But now we just want it quick quick. Castigate for anyone who goes down the professional route.

Steve balmer worked at Procter and gamble and joined Microsoft after his mba. He started as an employer

Are you saying the likes of Marissa or thidjane are not successful? Or is the mark of success making it to the top 100 list

Yes they are paid in stock because they are executive level and they started as employers and worked up to achieve that so they are rich through employment. The stock forms part of their compensation from their employer doesn't it?

I don't get what you mean about Thidjane. We are in July now so he is already CEO. Thidjane worked with Mckinsey before being appointed minister so he started as an employer and it was the skills and experience he built there that enabled him to be minister and eventually head prudential and now credit Suisse. He may not be on top 100 richest list but he is damn successful and a role model to me.

you are right, they are all successful. But what coy in Nigeria(Africa) will offer you stock options to get to this level? He didn't school in Africa and speaks german and french. Now let's bring it home, in Nigeria which billionaire is not an entrepreneur?

If you want to be like Thidjane: how many languages can you speak, in what and where were you educated?

Thidjane was born with a silver spoon (Thiam was born in Côte d'Ivoire. He is a descendant of two prominent families from Senegal and Cote d'Ivoire. On his mother’s side, he is a descendant of Yamousso, after whom the capital of Côte d'Ivoire, Yamoussoukro, is named. Thiam's mother, Marietou, was the niece of Félix Houphouët-Boigny, the founder and first President of Côte d'Ivoire.[7]

His father, Amadou Thiam, a journalist, was born in Senegal and emigrated to Côte d'Ivoire in 1947. He supported Houphouet-Boigny in his fight for the independence of the country and served more than 10 years in the Ivorian cabinet after independence. He was a Grand Officier de la Legion d’honneur, France’s highest order of decoration.[8] Tidjane’s uncle, Habib Thiam, was Prime Minister of Senegal for more than 10 years and also served as President of the National Assembly.

In 1982 Thiam was the first Ivorian to pass the entrance examination to the École Polytechnique in Paris. In 1984, he graduated from the École Polytechnique and in 1986 from the École Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Paris where he was top of his class)

Your last post sheds more light on where you are coming from and i agree that with the way things are in Nigeria now, there is a lot more working against the youth as they struggle to get on the career ladder and work their way up.

There definitely are companies which would offer stock options in Nigeria but i agree not that many. Many of the senior execs in Nigeria will have stock options as that is an effective way to align the interests of the executive with the shareholders.

I still maintain though that we need more than businesses in Nigeria for development. We need scientists, we need researchers, we need doctors, we need public policy experts, we need engineers, we need transportation experts, etc all dedicated to their chosen profession and we also need entrepreneurs and business managers. We need them all and cannot keep preaching for everyone to be an entrepreneur irrespective of their strengths or passion.

Good we both agree with each other now that we understand our points.
No matter your profession or level of professionalism, establishing a biz/consultancy even if its by the side and you are still in paid employment will increase your income and help the nation's teeming unemployed (more jobs will be created) We need scientists, we need researchers, we need doctors, we need public policy experts, we need engineers to work 8-6, we also need them to be entrepreneurs.
For example how many doctor under employment earns under any govt/private hospital in Nigeria earns a higher income than the Drs who put together EKO hospital? Read the history below

Eko Hospital Limited was itself a successor to Mercy Specialist Clinic, which had operated successfully between 1977 and 1982. the practice has been growing in bounds due to the total commitment and dedication of the partners and staff and the high level of reputation and customer goodwill enjoyed. With a four storey (40 bed capacity clinic situated at Ebute-Meta, Lagos in 1977, the company has grown into a multi-service and multi-location hospital with operations in Ikeja, Ikoyi, Central Lagos, Surulere, etc. to cover the entire Lagos area.

The EKPOCORP PLC, an acronym of the first letters of the founder’s surnames in alphabetical order i.e. “E” for ENELI, (Dr. A.C Eneli, deceased), “K” for KUKU (Dr. S.F. Kuku) and “O” for OBIORA (Mr. A.A.A Obiora) is a successor to Eko Hospital limited established in 1982 as a Joint Medical Practice patterned after both a teaching hospital as a Medical Center.
In 1988, a Management Agreement was signed between Eko Hospital, Ikeja Ltd. And the Eko Hospital Limited whereby Eko Hospital Limited, was to manage Eko Hospital Limited. In 1988 the management agreement culminated into the sales of all assets and liabilities of Eko Hospital Ikeja to Eko Hospital Limited. In compliance with the Companied and Allied Matter Decree 1990, the company by a special resolution passed in 1991 was re-registered as a Public Limited Liability Company (PLC), by a Board resolution in 1994 and approved at the Annual General Meeting; the Eko Hospital Plc was changed to Ekocorp Plc.

The Hospital has grown in leaps and bounds within twenty-five years. Today’s, there are two full-fledged hospitals located at Ikeja & Surulere in Lagos. The ikeja facility is a private teaching hospital of 130 beds and state of the art equipment. It is a tertiary institution with a wide range of therapeutic and diagnostic equipments. The Surulere hospital is a 40 bed Secondary healthcare facility. A third hospital is currently under construction at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. A diagnostic centre and Clinic is operational in Ikoyi of Lagos.

I agree with you that establishing a business when you have expertise is a good option if you have good ideas and the passion.

What I am against is this mantra of telling all the youth to go set up a business. No experience, no expertise nothing. Most successful businesses are set up to make a difference, or based on a passion and not just for survival or for money.

I also maintain you can be rich and successful if your skillset is in building and managing businesses rather than being an entrepreneur. You need to recognize your strength and skillset.

You mention Eko hospitals as an example. Dr Eneli qualified as a doctor in 1964 and didn't set up Eko hospitals until 1982. That's many solid years of experience which not only gives you the maturity and knowledge to manage the business, but also gives credibility when you nee to raise funds. It also means he would have a lot more contacts compared to a graduate hence my point why this mantra of telling everyone to set up a business especially as they finish school is wrong.

Now its all about money, and quick mentality. I knew Tayo Aderinokun of blessed memory and I remember he spoke about when they started GTBank. They had a vision of building an organization that would outlive them. We no longer have such visions anymore and it's all about quick bucks. Just do business to make money. Such businesses do not last and will not make an impact.

I am not saying being an entrepreneur isn't good, all I am saying is there are different roles to be played and you need to understand your strengths and where you can make the most impact rather than following a band wagon of setting up business just because that us the latest thing to do.
