Pastor arraigned over alleged rape

A 25-year-old pastor, Dare Awotunde, was arraigned before an Osogbo Magistrate‘s Court on Tuesday over an allegation that he raped a young lady (name withheld), whom he took to a river for deliverance.

According to the charge sheet, the incident occurred on February 16 in Ila-Orangun, Osun State.

The[b] police is prosecuting the pastor on a two-count charge that bordered on rape and indecent assault.

But when the charge was read to the accused, he pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the offence.

The pastor was said to have shaved the pubic hair of the victim after he forcefully had carnal knowleged of the lady by the riverside.

Police prosecutor, Mr. Emmanuel Abdullahi, said the lady was still lying ill at a private hospital in Ila-Orangun, following the injuries she sustained during the incident.[/b][b]Abdullahi added that the pastor took the lady to the riverside when she told him to help her offer prayers to God to get a husband, saying that the pastor took advantage of the lady when he raped her.

Opposing the bail application by the accused, Abdullahi expressed the fear that the suspect might go ahead to perform rituals with the pubic hair of the victim if granted bail.[/b]But the lawyer to the accused, Mr. A. Adeyemo, said the offence was bailable, and urged the court to use its discretion in granting bail to the suspect.

Magistrate Olalekan Ijiyode admitted the suspect to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties and adjourned the case till April 1.
