The Abia State Government has received N3 billion as its own share of the bailout fund doled out by the federal government to enable states clear the backlog of salary arrears crippling government business in most states.

The Special Assistant to the governor on media, Mr. Ugochukwu Emezue, who disclosed the cheering news to journalists in Umuahia at the weekend, said the money was just about half of the total amount of salary arrears owed workers, which is about N6 billion.

“The government has received the bailout fund, it is in the neighbourhood of N3 billion. Abia needs about N6 billion to clear the arrears. The money is here and Governor Okezie Ikpeazu is looking inwards to augment the money and clear the arrears,” he said.

Ikpeazu had in his maiden interaction with journalists in Abia explained that the issue of salary arrears involved only workers in parastatals and agencies as those in the ministries were not affected.

The SA on media said current salaries were being paid but acknowledged that “some agencies have not received theirs.”

“The reason,” he explained “is that government is carrying out workers verification; the workers that have not completed the exercise are those who have not received current salaries, those who have done theirs have since received their current salaries.”

Emezue said workers who have complied with the verification exercise would start receiving payment alerts by tomorrow (Tuesday) and urged those yet to comply to do so in order to assist the governor to build a civil service that is proactive and, dynamic and compliant.”

He reminded Abia workers of the pledge by Governor Ikpeazu that he would “not owe genuine workers” and therefore demanded their cooperation “so that those who are genuine workers will get their pay as at when due.”

“Ikpeazu will not owe any genuine worker,” he insisted.

The SA media called on Abia people to have faith in the Ikpeazu government as he “means well for the state,” adding that workers should ignore the rumours making the rounds that Governor Ikpeazu would not offset the salary arrears.

“The government will pay the arrears of all Abia workers,” he said.
