The Nigerian Exports Promotion Council (NEPC) and the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) have sealed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to increase the level of trade between Nigeria and the United Kingdom to about N4.5 trillion by 2020.

The pact, according to NEPC, would see both countries coming up with deliberate strategies to boost the level of non-oil exports owing to the decline in oil revenue as well as boosting the volume of bilateral trade from the £8 billion (N2.4 trillion) as of the end of 2014 to £15 billion (N4.57 trillion) by 2020. The Executive Secretary of NEPC, Olusegun Awolowo, signed the MoU on behalf of the council, while the President of NBCC, Mr. Dapo Adelegan, signed on behalf of the chamber.

Awolowo said the agency has been at the forefront for diversifying the Nigerian economy, noting that this had been further reinforced by the recent decline in the price of oil in the global market. While admitting that the drop in the price of oil has led to reductions in government revenue with pronounced negative effects on different sectors of the economy, he said the NEPC has identified 13 National Strategic Export Products to replace oil. He said the potentials of the products, which cut across key sectors of the economy would be maximised through investments, capacity development, innovation and formidable partnerships.

The need to promote the expiration of these products, according to him, was what inspired the pact between the NEPC and the Chamber.

The 13 products include palm oil, cocoa, cashew, sugar, rice, iron ore, metals, aluminium and auto parts.

Others are petroleum products, fertilizer/urea, petrochemicals and methanol.

Wow!! This is a big deal whichever way one sees it.

Buhari proving sceptics wrong with every single move. God bless that gentleman abundantly.

Waiting for the WWs to come cry on the thread as usual. They rejoice at the news of failure and doubt or outrightly express displeasure on hearing news of triumph and success of Nigeria. You can't but wonder how exactly they cope with life.

Same story but no action, it will still favor the Brits more than us. We need to leave these western powers who bastardise our oil economy and face the Orient where there is a larger market for our non oil export

Good..

But this is a stopgap measure....we should stop relying on exports of raw materials abroad.

We must....urgently....industrialize.

For once diversity in Nigerian economy after the price of oil has fallen. Oil brought more harm than good, corruption rate increased when oil was discovered in Nigeria. Tribalism also increased because of oil. Few took Nigerian oil as if its there personal business but thank God they will all drink there oil at the rate oil is discovered in other nations and the rate the USA is converting shale gas.
Please the diversity is good but the UK should pay us with gold not with paper money they printed in there back yard, they should find another raw material to lay us than flood our economy with there paper money or pay us with there advance knowledge in technology not paper money.
They have acquired so much advancement in technology they should pay us with that than paper money which has no value on the long run.

Great stuff - we had the same thing going before now the only difference is the increase in projection or forecast.

We won't rejoice over forecast we can only wait for the actualization........
I hope we continue with the GEJ encouraged rice pyramid which kicked off in the north.

Appreciate what PMB is doing first. Industrialisation doesn't start just in one day. When the international community trust you enough, they are the ones that will promote the industrialisation

What will you be exporting to the UK ? Average UK citizen wont buy any shit from Nigeria. But Nigerians will buy even tooth pick from UK, and with the crazy exchange rate of 350 naira to the pound, this is one-sided trade relationship. China, India, Brazil and Indonesia are countries we should be dealing with, and not a baren country called UK.

I rest my case.
