Good to know there's an Hrexpert here...

Talking abt skills and certifications, can u pls list some useful ones? Coz I just can't figure out anyone now. And how can one get experience without a job?

Thank you for asking these salient questions and I know that you just stated the position of so many job seekers especially fresh graduates who have become despondent based these requirements.

When we ask for or want to know how experienced you are for certain jobs, it is simply expecting to hear your "practical knowledge" required to handle the vacant position. This is because the theories in schools were tailored on the assumption of ceteris paribus (all things being equal) and all things can't be equal. However, I want to inform you that experience requirements is dependent on the particular job.

I will take you through two examples here and they are management and engineering jobs. Management jobs here refers to non - engineering jobs. It is also important to understand that all jobs requires some level of people and resources management.

Opportunities to gain experience starts with extracurricular activities in schools but often times we ignore them. School association leaders are expected to have gained enormous experience in people management. An engineering student should also utilize the industrial training opportunities to learn more by volunteering to work more than is required.

Experience is the summation of all the things learnt from events around you. For those already out of school, I encourage you to do voluntary jobs related to your field if you can't find any job for now.

Bovi became a comedian from being an errand boy (PA) to an established star.

As a management student, get your NIM. As an engineering student, learn autocad. As an accounting graduate, get your ICAN, ACCA etc. Attend high profile seminars.
Our preference for all these professional certifications is because they are more practical and technical oriented as against a masters degree which is just a continuation of the same theory.

The difference between a B.Sc holder and masters degree holder can hardly be seen. Sometimes the only difference is the paper (certificate). For a fresh graduate, your masters degree is almost not very important. Masters degrees are more valuable when you already have experience.

There is almost nothing that a masters degree holder in Business Administration that is strange to a sound B.Sc holder if both of them have no experience. Having said that, a masters degree can gives you greater chances of being shortlisted for interviews than a B.Sc.

Yea, well said but according to a picture I saw on my friends phone, it says how do I acquire experience when you won't give me job?

I appreciate your quest for knowledge and I must confess that the inscription on your friend's phone is a valid enquiry.

I have responded to this question by another fellow. Let me remind you that the experience we require is mostly the "practical knowledge " and it requires your engagement in your field either by employment or voluntary services.
One of the major reasons for experience is in the area of sound decision making and this encompasses good judgment, Conflict resolution and people management. In any organisation, every employee is a decision maker and a single decision by any employee can kill an organization.

It is better for us to train our new hires on the job when they are already experienced in the aforementioned areas.

If you have observed, the reasoning of some "graduates" and their responses to either criticisms or opinions here on nairaland vindicates this minimum requirement. More so, if you have been a course representative, an association leader/executive, completed your industrial training and or NYSC without experience, then you may have neglected their usefulness and aim.

Chief among the many reasons for consideration when looking the work experience section of your CV is to see how your career background is helpful to the vacant position.
Looking at your job experience here, one thing I must tell you is no knowledge or work experience is a waste. In fact, both positions should have prepared you adequately to become a good people manager and ability to manage stress and conflict. Please include all your job experiences but make sure it relates to the vacant position.
More so, considering HRM as a career is wonderful but it's just as fabulous as any other career path.

My advice for anybody is to seek a career that you love irrespective of what course you studied in college/university. Most prolific journalists never had a degree in mass communication. The best actors in nollywood never had a degree in theatre arts etc.

With your CV, you can easily be considered in so many jobs.

Is it ideal to indicate on the CV one's leadership position in church. If one provides leadership for about 100 youth, and also work with the church council, does it apply?

Am now afraid to continue on Meterllurgy and Material Engineering. After completing my pre degree science. Though I love the course but am beginning to think its backward in this country.

Met & Mat Eng is a fantastic course, I will advice you to continue but if you must switch consider Mechanical Eng.

Goodluck

Thanks to you and to others that have replied ma post.

Mechanical engineering is too common to my liking. Would have preferred Chemical engineering but my school(FUTA) does not offer the course.
So I will stick with Met and Mat,graduate with good grade, then by God grace opt in for chemical engineering in my masters. Then professional certificate comes later.
What's your take on my little plan?

I am particularly impressed with the responses so far. No infantile comments or jejune jokes

I think experience is far more advantageous.

I am a HR expert and during interviews, our concentration shifts from your paper qualifications to what you "know and what you can offer". Except if all the candidates are inexperienced, you can not be employed ahead of a highly experienced B.Sc holder just because you have a masters degree.
If you are just brilliant, even a masters degree won't make you intelligent and so when you meet intelligent panelists, your brilliance may not still help you get the job.
Masters in most cases only gives you the advantage of being shortlisted for an interview while your intelligence and Know - how gives you the job.
So, I will advice you strive to acquire experience anyhow you can and also get a professional certification. These two gives you immediate advantage.
Hi, If you don't mind, I'd like to get in touch.

Regards.

I wonder why you guys are discouraging the OP, i have someone with an ican still jobbless. Didnt you guys clearly read where he said he made a 2:2. An ican will not be able to cover up that lapse as much as a good msc. Trust me, most jobs dat require professional courses require a 2.1 in bsc or a 2.2 with an msc...follow the trends of things. Another advantage is meeting working class people who seek to upgrade there certificates. That is a good way to get to meet them in loyalty to help u with opportunities in there company's. I wrote qualification exam for nasarawa state uni to do an msc and i met a guy applying for his phd he works in raw materials, today i talk with him and he has already promised me a job there once the opportunity shows itself. My best advice to the op is to run the two side by side. In this evee changing nigeria, dont count out anything and be open to robust relationship with your study mates. Go the extra mile to learn better and teach them, help them with their assignments, trust me their are still very good people who will give u a shoulder to lift your out of the murky waters.
