Apparently this is where there is contention
6 - 0 + 1,

So using BODMAS literally, you performing the addition operand before the subtraction.
What you need to understand is that there are numerous "order of precedence", while the British recognize BOD MAS, America and some other European countries use PEMDAS(Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally).
It stands for "Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division,Addition and Subtraction".
Note, it states addition AND subtraction, the AND means they have equal order of precedence, when working with an equation that has both, you evaluate from LEFT to RIGHT, note the same AND clause with the multiplication AND division.
They both have a clause, you can read this up, when you have a bunch of operands with the same rank YOU EVALUATE FROM LEFT TO RIGHT.

It's 7 if you use BODMAS!

Mynd44:

And you arrived at zero? Please show your workings.

Thank you

4q:
using BODMAS

() of / x + -

6 -1 x 0 + 2 / 2

No (), No of
Next is division (/) so 2/2 = 1
so = 6 - 1 x 0 + 1
Next is multiplication (x)
1 x 0 = 0
so 6 - 0 + 1
Next is Addition (+)
0 + 1= 1
Next is subtraction (-)
6 - 1 = 5

Ans = Five (5)

E no do your hand one kin when you dey type the above

lets take it from here..

0 + 1 = 1

then you type 6 - 1 =5

How did 1 become -1, if there is no sign in front of it is a positive.. so

- 0 + 1 = + 1

or

+ 1 - 0 = + 1

So..
6 + 1 = 7..

in the equation below...

6 -0 + 1

the -ve is for the Zero, 6 is +ve and 1 is +ve.. so you can re-arrange it as

6+1-0=7

QED

The issue actually is that in addition and subtraction, the number "0" is insignificant, whether is is positive or negative.

Division and multiplication have the same precedence in mathematics.

Addition and Subtraction have the same precedence in mathematics.

Yes. I know this. That's basically what I said. The 'and' means they are on the same level. Same precedence.

You all should understand that the mathematical symbol of either plus or minus is attached to the number itself to indicate either it's positivity or negativity. It's not standalone.

6-1×0+2÷2 could also be written as (6-1)0+2/2=(5)0+1=1 apologies I guess its 1

even you got it wrong. Following BODMAS principle division would be 1st. 2÷2=1, multiplication next 1×0=0, addition next 0+1=1, subtraction last 6-1=5. hence final answer is 5

No! Even considering the fact that addition and subtraction have equal precedence, that's not where you went wrong.

Let me write it out. It is positive 6, negative 0, positive 1. In other words. 6 + (-0) + (+1).

You can not detach the minus from the zero! Please! Like I keep saying! Ask Google!

If you don't use BODMAS.. what else can you get...? Lets solve it using simple english..

6 - 1 x 0 + 2 / 2 =

You have 6 oranges, you promise to give Ade 1 orange if he come your house, Your Mummy also promise to share 2 orange between you and Emeka. Unfortunately Ade didn't come, but your mum share the two orange between you and Emeka, so you get 1 more ornage and Emeka got one orange.. How many orange you now have?

Initial 6 orange minus Zero orange( because Ade no show) plus the 1 more orange you got from your mother.. That is 7 orange in total..

6-0+1 is not equall to 6-(0+1)

6-(0+1) = 6 - 0 -1 ,

I just cant believe my eyes....Grown men arguing with full force that the answer is 5, Haba, even if you believe your answer is correct. You should be able to try a second time and get it...this is elementary primary school arithmetic...and the answer is 7.

I perceive most people make mistake at this level... 6 - 0 + 1

Assuming u have 6 naira and u remove 0 naira debt and add savings of 1 naira....what do you have ?.....Obviously 7 naira.

The answer is 5 and it is checked in many ways
PEMDAS is the method used and most accounting /engineering reps neglect this rule and quickly go to multiplication then addition and subtraction. They neglect the order.
6-1x0+2/2 = 5
(1x0) + (2/2) =
0 + 1 =1
6 - 1 = 5
