Generator importers frustrating power projects-FG

The Presidential Steering Council on the National Integrated Power Projects on Thursday raised the alarm that an unidentified generator importation cartel is frustrating the success of ongoing power projects aimed at alleviating the dismal power supply situation in the country.

The Council, which is chaired by Vice-President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, met in the State House, during which the sum of N43.29bn was approved for the rehabilitation of existing Power Holding Company of Nigeria infrastructure.

Addressing journalists after the meeting, which was attended by contractors handling the projects, Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan said that already, moves by the Federal Government to complete the NIPPs have come under attack.

“As at today, even efforts of the Federal Government to ensure completion of the NIPPs are even being attacked (in the press).

“Somebody has an interest to ensure that whatever we are doing fails.

“The problem of power in this country did not start today. Each time government tries to move there is always somebody who ties a rope and pulls government back.

“It is a complex thing, it is a big cartel”, Uduaghan said.

He further enjoined those involved to search their consciences, saying, “You who is supplying generator, are you comfortable?

“Ghana today has 24 hours power; why can’t we have it?”, he queried.

However, the governor stressed that President Umaru Yar’Adua is determined to ensure that Nigerians enjoy 24 hours power supply.

Earlier, while disclosing decisions arrived at the meeting, Uduaghan said a budget on N43.293bn for the rehabilitation of existing PHCN infrastructure was approved by the NIPP Steering Council.

He said, the money would be sourced from a consolidated account contributed to by the federal, state and local governments for implementation of plans to revive the power sector.

The establishment of the contributory account was agreed to at a meeting of the National Economic Council in 2008, and was subject to approvals by the various state assemblies, as well as the National Assembly.

I read in Punch that power supply would be stable by 2010 (that’s next year) Even the Lagos State Government and other states like Kwara, Abia and Kano are already working towards achieving that goal.

I just hope they mean what they say this time.

It is so sad and this is what i have been saying all along, that there are some pple that wont wanna see Nigerians out of the dark, for their own personal gain.
I wont even be surprised, if this fools hire people to steal materials and equipments that the govt wanna use to fix the power generation in Nija.
Sabotage is always Nigerians' style.

nigerian govt officials and their panegyric rhetorics,if they know the cartels, why dont the president simply summon them and give them a friendly warning to desist or face the might of his govt?acting helpless in the face of this, isnt the answer or the solution to the problem are the perceived cartels are hardly going to repent and then willingly give up control

I love the way you put it, but tell me why the friendly warning?
They need to be arrested if there is enuf evidence.

This makes sense. A successful power project in Nigeria will result to "end of the road" for the greedy generator importers. Too bad, Nigerians just can't get a break. It is always something. Something that is also manufactured by Nigerians

well, you know that this problem of corruption is endemic and runs really deep and connects with virtually everyone of the socalled politicians/businne people,so the cartels will get desperate and do anything to remain anonymous or to give up the status quo,if they know that they will be arrested, ego also plays a big part in this as well,a friendly warning or veiled threat will show them that the president means business and at the same time givn them a modicum of respect, extreme measures in these sort of delicate situations and people who have widespread patronage wont bode well for nigeria or the president himself, remember how mko worked to overthrow the govt of buhari and idiagbon

May be Pastor Lucabrasi should go ahead and pray for us, so that all our problems could go away.

What a disgusting excuse from doltish leaders of colonial contraption called Nigeria? Nigeria is a qualified cesspit.
USA is almost power sufficient country yet it has not stopped the people of USA from embarking on brisk business of manufacturing generators of all shape and sizes.

Since when did a generator cartel become more powerful than the will of good governance: the point here is dat yaradua govt lacks the will to do anything good for the people
Re: Generator Importers Frustrating Power Projects-Fg by grafikdon: 2:09am On Mar 22, 2009
Today, it's 'cartel', tomorrow it will be juju and when they observe Nigerians are having a laugh at their expense, they'll accuse God of racism (refusing to answer the prayers of the black man).

When every imbecilic excuse fails, they'll urge everyone to leave matters in the hands of God, including but not limited to NEPA or is it PHCN and non payment of pensions. . .

What I find very fascinating is not our imbecilic leaders but rather their unshakable conviction that Nigerians are a bunch of suffer head  imbeciles and perpetual gluttons for punishment who will adjust to any inhuman situation or worse still forgive their atrocities as long as they are ''trying'' (which usually means diverting 93% of the federal allocation to their private accounts instead the usual 100 or 98%)
Re: Generator Importers Frustrating Power Projects-Fg by Jakumo(m): 6:47am On Mar 22, 2009
Surely, if the culprits have now FINALLY been identified, and it is clear that they are in fact responsible for the sabotage of all Nigeria's electricity generation equipment, and in so doing assure that the country remains confined to the stone age, then those individuals can be located and rounded up, whereupon they could be "accidentally" shot or bludgeoned to death while "trying to escape", so that their battered cadavers can be "accidentally" dissolved in vats of acid, due to "unfortunate" paperwork errors.
