I saw a thread titled, I believe, Nigeria states and what it produces. Considering a year ago I actually did a research paper on this exact topic, it intrigued me therefore I opened the thread and upon reading the thread, I noticed some states intentionally ommited, some states intentionally included and given higher percentage than it should and a cash crop (Round wood) that is no longer exported from Nigeria anymore due to the 1967 ban placed on it, intentionally included and what really caught my interest was the Gold production. Where I do know the states with gold in Nigeria are Abuja, Abia, Ebonyi, Edo, Kebbi, Kwara, Niger, Oyo, Sokoto and Zafara but according to the thread I spoke of somehow, someway Osun and Oyo are the gold producers of Nigeria with a minority of North sprinkled in. That peeked my interest so I decided to redo the research I did a year ago.

Round wood is no longer exported from Nigeria since this has been placed on ban since 1976. The round-wood produced in Nigeria is mainly non-coniferous hardwood. There are no authentic series on it since the 1990s’. However, the Central Bank published estimates are reported with FAO’s forecasts for comparison. It must be noted that round-wood statistics includes industrial round wood, poles and fuelwood.

YAM

Yam production

Yam is grown in many states of the Federation. In the past nine year, however, only Niger State (the
‘green’ state) has produced on the average above 3,000 metric tons of Yam. The ‘blue’ states including
Benue, Enugu and Taraba have each produced on the average between 2001-3000 metric tons of yam
(see Fig. 16 below). The ‘yellow’ states including Kaduna, Nassarawa, Kogi, Ondo, and Cross River
produced on the average between 1000-2000 metric tons respectively, while the remaining ‘white’
states each produced less than 1000 metric tons in the last nine years.

When compared with other world regional yield averages (1999-2007), Abia State’s yam average yield
(15.7 mt/ha) is better than those of the world (10.4 mt/ha), Africa (10.4 mt/ha), Asia (15.2 mt/ha) and
the Americas (8.8 mt/ha), but equal to that of Oceania (15.7 mt/ha) and worse than Europe (16.3
mt/ha).

SORGHUM

Sorghum is mostly produced in the Northeast, Northwest and North central regions of Nigeria. Only
Borno State (the “green” state in this case) produced greater than 600 thousand metric tons of sorghum
on the average in the last nine years (see Fig. 10 below). Kano, Kaduna, Niger and Zamfara States (the
“blue” states) each produced on the average between 401-600 thousand metric tons, while the average
sorghum production in each of the “yellow” states (including Katsina and Bauchi) is between 200-400
metric tons. As can also be seen in Fig. 10, several other “white” states each produced less than 200
metric tons of sorghum from 1999-2007.

Kaduna State recorded the highest average yield of 1.9 metric tons/ha. This is certainly better than the

tons/ha). However, it is less than the averages of Americas (3.4 metric tons/ha), Europe (3.9 metric
tons/ha) and Oceania (2.6 metric tons/ha).

RICE

Rice production

Data show that rice is produced in almost every state of Nigeria, but most of these states (the “white”
states in this case) in the last nine years (1999-2007) each produced below 200 thousand metric tons on
the average (see Fig. 13 below). The “yellow” states including Taraba and Benue produced between 200-
400 thousand metric tons each, while the only “blue” state, Niger State, produced between 401-600
thousand metric tons of rice, on the average, in the last nine years. No state produced more than 600
thousand metric tons within the same period.

Ebonyi State recorded the highest average yield of 2.9 metric tons/ha and this is better than the Africa

MAIZE

Maize production

Maize, an important cereal in Nigeria, is produced in all the states of the Federation. Though an all-
ecology crop in Nigeria, most states (the “white” states in this case) each produced less than 200
thousand metric tons on the average from 1999-2007 (see Fig. 7 below). The six “yellow” states
including Borno, Plateau, Taraba, Kogi, Oyo and Ogun produced between 200-400 thousand metric tons
each, while Niger State (the “blue” state) produced between 401-600 thousand metric tons in the same
period. Kaduna State is the only “green” state in this case producing more than 600 thousand metric
tons, on the average, in the last nine years.

PALM OIL

Palm trees grow up in wet rain forests and in savannah, which means that 24 states, mainly in the South east and central zones, produce palm oil. The North central zones produce palm fruits only incidentally. The 9 states situated in the Niger Delta (Figure 4) account for 57% of the national production (PIND, 2011).

Other Cash crops

3.5.1 Cashew
The table reveals 27 States and the FCT (Abia, Akwa-Ibom, Anambra, Benue, Cross River, Delta, Egboyin, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Imo, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto and Abuja) planted cashew on a total land area of 120.17 hectares 1. Kwara State planted the largest hectares of land of 31.49 hectares followed by Imo State with 11.86 hectares. The least areas planted were recorded in Rivers and Akwa Ibom States with 0.01 hectares and 0.55 hectares respectively.

The total production nationwide was 93.292 metric tonnes with Kwara State contributing 38.98 metric tonnes. Imo State produced the second largest output with 8.48 metric tonnes. The least productions were found in Rivers State with 0.01metric tonnes and 0.14 metric tonnes in Akwa Ibom State.

3.5.2 Cocoa
The table shows that cocoa was cultivated in 18 States (Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Rivers and Taraba) on a total land area of 1,363.60 hectares. Cross River State cultivated the largest land with 327.91 hectares followed by Ondo State with 321.97 hectares. The least cultivated land areas were 0.04 hectares by Imo State and 0.18 hectares by Rivers State.

The total production by the 18 States was 370.01 metric tonnes, with Ondo State contributing the highest with 92.22 metric tonnes followed by Osun State with 74.10 metric tonnes. The least production was 0.01 metric tonnes by Imo State.

3.5.3 Cotton
The table indicates that 18 States (Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Ekiti, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Sokoto, Yobe and Zamfara) produced cotton on a total land area of 399.87 hectares. Zamfara State cultivated the largest land area with 92.62 hectares followed by Katsina State with 75.91 hectares. The least cultivated land areas were Ekiti State 0.07 hectares and Ondo State 0.10 hectares.

The national production figure for cotton was 533.31 metric tonnes out of which Zamfara State produced the highest with 135.56 metric tonnes.The second largest output was 116.61 metric tonnes by Katsina State while the least production was 0.05 metric tonnes by Ekiti State.


3.5.4 Coffee
According to the table, 11 States, (Abia, Cross River, Edo, Ekiti, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo and Taraba) produced coffee on a total land area of 54.34 hectares. Kogi State cultivated the largest land area with 8.99 hectares (16.54%). The least cultivated land areas were Abia State 0.83 hectares (1.53%).

[/b]The total output for coffee nationwide was 32.91 metric tonnes. Taraba State had the highest output with 6.60 metric tonnes. The least output was 0.60 metric tonnes by Abia State.[/b]

3.5.5 Garlic
The table reveals that 11 States (Adamawa, Benue, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara) produced garlic nationwide in the period under review in an estimated land area of 30.49 hectares. Sokoto State cultivated the largest area of land 9.11 hectares (29.88%) The least cultivated land areas were Kaduna State with 0.12 hectares.

National production figure for garlic was 150.12(„000) metric tonnes. Sokoto State produced the highest quantity with 39.41 metric tonnes. The least output on garlic was from Kaduna State with 0.09 metric tonnes.

3.5.6 Ginger
According to the table, 15 States and the FCT (Abia, Benue, Borno, Eboyin, Ekiti, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kogi, Nasarawa, Oyo, Taraba, Zamfara and Abuja) cultivated ginger nationwide on an estimated total land area of 49.60. Kaduna State cultivated the largest land area with 13.30 hectares. The least cultivated land areas were FCT Abuja with 0.27 hectares.

The total production estimate for ginger nationwide was 167.29 metric tonnes. Kaduna State produced the highest quantity 43.14 metric tonnes followed by Benue State with 34.43 metric tonnes. The least output for ginger was 0.35 metric tonnes.

3.5.7 Gum Arabic
The table reveals that gum arabic was found in 9 States (Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto Taraba and Yobe) on an estimated total land area of 20.20(„000) hectares. Yobe State has the largest area of land with 4.25(„000) hectares (21.04%).The least land areas were Katsina State with 0.43(„000) hectares.

An estimated 23.04 metric tonnes of gum arabic was produced nationwide. Yobe State recorded the highest with 8.50 metric tonnes. The least output of gum Arabic was from Katsina State with 0.59 metric tonnes.

3.5.8 Kolanut
The table shows that 19 States cultivated kolanut (Abia, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Benue, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Imo, Kogi, Lagos, Gombe, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Rivers and Taraba) in a total land area of 274.37 hectares. Ondo State cultivated the largest land area with 77.48 hectares. The least cultivated land area for kolanut was Cross River State 0.02 hectares.

The national output on kolanut was 174.23 metric tonnes, Ogun State produced the highest with 51.46 metric tonnes. The least output on Kolanut was from Niger State with 0.02 metric tonnes.

3.5.9 Oil Palm
The table shows that 25 Statesand the FCT (Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Benue, Cross River, Delta , Eboyin, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Imo, Kaduna, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, osun, Ondo, Oyo, Rivers, Taraba, Abuja ) cultivated 1,724.23 hectares of land nationwide for oil palm. The largest land area cultivated was 172.82 hectares by Akwa-Ibom State. The least cultivated land areas were FCT 0.78 hectares and Adamawa State 0.80 hectares.

Total production figure for palm oil was 1,331.53 metric tonnes out of which Akwa-Ibom State produced the largest quantity 135.82 metric tonnes.The least output on oil palm was from the FCT with 0.17 metric tonnes and Adamawa State with 0.20 metric tonnes.


3.5.10 Rubber
From the table in view, 10 States (Abia, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Ekiti, Kogi, Ogun, Ondo, Rivers) cultivated rubber with a total land area of 65.13 hectares out of which Delta State cultivated the highest with 19.45 hectares. The least cultivated land area was Kogi State with 0.28 hectares.

The total output for rubber was 48.02 metric tonnes. Delta State produced the largest quantity with 15.95 metric tonnes. The least production on rubber was from Kogi State with 0.17 metric tonnes.

3.5.11 Shea Nut
The table indicates that shea nut was found in 19 States and the FCT (Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Taraba, Yobe, Zamfara, Abuja) in an estimated total land area of 334.36(„000) hectares. Jigawa State cultivated the largest land area with 35.95 hectares. The least land areas were Nasarawa State with 1.02 hectares.

The total production of shea nuts was 336.39 metric tonnes out of which Kaduna State produced the highest with 35.49 metric tonnes. The estimated least output of shea nut was from Nasarawa State with 1.09 metric tonnes.


3.5.12 Sesame Seed (Beniseed)
The table indicates that 17 States and the FCT (Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, Abuja) cultivated beniseed nationwide in a total land area of 302.13 hectares. Jigawa State cultivated the largest land area with 85.79 hectares. The least land areas cultivated was Sokoto State with 1.00 hectare.

The national production of sesame seed was estimated at 127.60 metric tonnes. Nassarawa State produced the highest quantity with 40.82 metric tonnes. The least output was from Sokoto State with 0.59 metric tonnes.

3.5.13 Sugarcane
The table indicates that 28 States and the FCT (Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Delta, Ebonyin, Edo, Ekiri, Enugu, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger, Ondo, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba and Zamfara) cultivated 76.38 hectares of land nationwide for the production of sugarcane. Kano State cultivated the largest area of land with 13.27 hectares. The least area of land for sugarcane cultivation was in Enugu State with 0.02 hectares.

The total production nationwide for sugarcane was 1,429.57 metric tonnes. Kano State produced the largest quantity with 401.19 metric tonnes followed by Kaduna State with 197.21 metric tonnes. The least output on sugarcane production was from Lagos State with 0.10 metric tonnes.


3.5.14 Tea
Two states (Plateau, and Taraba) were involved in tea production covering a total land area of 1.67 hectares. Taraba State cultivated the largest land area with 1.31 hectares while Plateau State cultivated 0.36 hectares.

Total output figure for tea was 5.61 metric tonnes. Taraba State produced the highest with 4.17 metric tonnes while Plateau State produced 1.44 metric tonnes of total output.

A little of history I read while doing this research. something that caught my interest and I feel needed to be shown (sidenote: yes it is another debunking myth)

The principal mineral occurrences discovered by the survey teams included lignite deposits at Asaba, lead-zinc ores at several locations, tin and columbite in the south-east, monazite, limestone and lead-zinc ores at Abakaliki district.

Others were coal at Enugu, brine springs at Arufu and Awe, Galena in Jos area, iron ore deposits in Niger and Kwara districts and marble deposits in Jakura. Mining activity in controlled form, however, commenced in the country in 1915 with the production of coal at the Enugu mines.

The downturn in the economy and the introduction of the Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) necessitated a review of Government thinking. The result is the crystallisation of the concept of diversification of activities, and the promotion of privatization and commercialization.

In other words it was agriculture, Coal, Tin, Columbite and Gold was what sustained the country prior to the discovery of Oil meaning North, south south and south east were the regions that sustained the country before everything fell on south south's shoulder
