Yes they were the first because doing the time, the head of state in person of Azikwe made sure igbos got all federal appointments and headed all federal offices.

Didn't it strike you as odd that even when the Yoruba was ahead of the Igbos in education at the period, the head of state thought it fit that hs tribes men should head all federal institutions.

The same igbos are here accusing Buhari of following a template handed down by Azikwe the grand lord of tribalist in Nigeria history.

In fact, this issue is one of the reason I laugh at the ilks of adichie when they want to form upright.

Azikwe formed a government with the less educated northerners in the first republic after turning down Awolowo advances to form a govwrment at the centre.

Like a slave Azikwe ran with the northerners because in his foolish mind since the northerns were really behind educationally he can corner all federal government juicy jobs for the Igbos. well it did work until the Abokis turned them to suya grin

I will say it again, how the Yoruba survive thus far with the hate from these Igbo thieves is a testament that there is a God.

Azikwe to spite the Yorubas for chasing him away from Lagos, made sure no Yoruba got a federal government appointment during the first republic.

That bastard Azikwe made sure the Northerners stayed back in the country Nigeria. If he had accepted Awolowo offer to form a government, Tafawa Balewa was at that time in 1959 READYto TAKE his people out of Nigeria. That would have been the end of North and South Union.

but trust an Igbo man to always think they are smarter than others, while the igbos gained with appointments, the northerners cornersed the political structure and ensure it has 50PERCENT of the deferral legislature, book is not required there.

The SW was left to rot and we persevered. God bless Awolowo, he made sure while the SW didn't gain anything from the federal government, he gave his people good leadership.

These men were great minds but if Zik had not interfered in their selection to spite Awo,probably they may not have been appointed.
While'Eni' Hall is one of the greatest halls of residence in UNILAG, UI library is named after Kenneth Dike.
If the Yoruba don't appreciate them, those important university structures would not have been named after these great men.
You forgot that at that time, Ojukwu has not incited the Igbo against their brothers and sisters from other parts of Nigeria.

Eni Njoku attended the following schools:

From primary to university

-Ebem Primary School and attended Hope Waddell Training Institute, Calabar

- He went to Yaba Higher School (now Yaba College of Technology) Lagos

- botany at the University of Manchester in England

He worked thus:

When he returned to Nigeria, Eni Njoku took up teaching appointment at the University of Ibadan as a lecturer.

God bless Yoruba people for creating the platform for all Nigerians to achieve their goals. God bless Awolowo for putting education the forefront of Yoruba legacy.

Even though Azikwe selected him based on tribe to head the institution, the great Yoruba will not hold it against Eni who is our product.

This is the most important part:

THERE WERE NO SCHOOLS IN THE EAST DURING THIS PERIOD TO GET EDUCATION AS ALL THE HIGHER INSTITUTUTES OF LEARNING WERE IN THE SOUTH WEST YORUBA LANDS grin PROF ENI NJOKU WORKED TILL THE LATER PART OF HIS LIFE IN THE PRESTIGOUS UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN. YORUBA ALWAYS LEADING.

While we are at it, OP please don't miss this part:

The igbos have and always been playing catch up to the south west. IN FACT THE NORTH AND SE HAVE ALWAYS BEING PLAYING CATCH UP TO THE SW.

This is an extract from the article from renound Igbo scholar pat utomi, please note the struggle of the Igbo nation to catch up with the SW:

https://blanknewsonline./2014/05/19/nigeria-on-zones-of-development-by-pat-utomi/

EXTRACT:
With the west leading off in launching the first television station in Africa with the bragging pay ff: WNTV- first in Africa, Eastern Nigeria quickly followed with its own audacious call tune: ENBS.TV second to none. Free education in the west set the Eastern region racing in same direction but with wore limited cash. The answer would be a great formula that brought the state, the community and missionaries into a synergy partnership known as Ibuanyidanda. This enabled the East leapfrog a lag relative to the West. In the same way, on industrialization, the East reacted to the Ikeja Industrial estate with Aba and Port Harcourt and the Sarduana with the Kakuri, Kaduna, Textile hub, and Bompai in Kano

A lion will always be a lion and a sheep will always be a sheep.

It is a very wrong description of what actually happened. What happened is that before independence, the NPC and the NCNC reached an agreement to run Nigeria together. Nnamdi Azikiwe refused to form a coalition with the AG because the Yoruba were educated and would be competing with the Igbo people for the jobs. Therefore they wanted a coalition.( with the NPC) Because that coalition was a very conservative one, they wanted to go with the Hausa-Fulani, who did not have enough people to take over the jobs that the Europeans were exiting from nor did they have any to deal with the new jobs that would be created by independence. So, the Yoruba leader was jailed and the Yoruba who could have looked for jobs were shunted aside. So, the NCNC, though they have a strong following in the Western Region, arranged for the jobs to be taken over by their primary constitutuencies.
