Perspectives On Buhari’s Selective Probe by Emisco3310(m): 2:32am On Aug 20, 2015 |
It is no more news that people have shown diverse reactions towards Buhari’s plan to probe only the immediate past administration of Goodluck Jonathan. The question is, is this right and fair? Whether yes or no,on what grounds? If Buhari promised the probe of past administrations during his election campaign, let’s be reminded at this juncture that such a promise constitute a social contract which is not legally and constitutionally binding because there was no intention to enter into a legally binding relation. It is a crystal clear fact that almost all,if not all the past administrations embezzled and misappropriated our funds. That is,all or most past administrations are guilty, and are sinners. And the wronged or offended libertarian person has the legal and moral right to choose who to punish! Since Buhari’s action is outside legal jurisdiction according to our constitution, then,he has the right to either do or undo! A Prestigious Yoruba adage says “Ti eniyan ba so pe eegun ile baba oun yoo jo ti ko ba jo mo ko si baba eni to le muni sii”,meaning, a person is not bound by a legally unbinding or unenforceable promise. If Buhari is not legally and constitutionally erroneous in his plan, then, on what ground again? Another angle from which the issue can be viewed is the moral corner. According to the Utilitarian Morality Theory, “An action is morally right if it promotes a greater sense of good over evil while a morally wrong action is the one which promotes a greater sense of evil over good” Moreover, another Morality Theory called Egoism says “An action is morally right if it promotes or satisfies the interest of the performer or doer of the action” Considering the above theories, probing only the past immediate administration will do more good than harm for both Buhari and Nigerians on one hand, and it will satisfy the interest of Buhari – the action doer on the other hand, thus, the conditions of the two theories are satisfied. Also,if Buhari were to satisfy the interest of those who argue that his probing only the Jonathan’s administration is unfair, then, his chain of probe will be endless and unrealistic, and will be like chasing the ghost or shadow, which is a futile endeavour before its birth. Therefore, Buhari has not erred. Furthermore, going by the principle of proximity, the Jonathan’s administration is the closest to Buhari. And Yorubas do say “Eni ti a ba sun ti ni a maa n jarunpa lu” And a beautiful English idiom says ” A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush”. Buhari has the right to choose.Let us not deny him his right by our propaganda mission. “An objective and rational criticism is a checkmating tool in governance, but a false and propaganda criticism is a destroyer and killer of governance” God bless Nigeria God bless Nigerians.
