Good day and Happy new year to everyone. Unique thread I must say. Advise pls: What strength of material should be used for tank tower for a bungalow that would carry 750 gallons of water at the top and 1250 gallons down? H channel? What strength? Galvanised pipe? What strength? What would they cost? |

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by rotecch77(m): 4:47pm On Jan 02, 2021 |
bixton: Roof is not by how many days or year. Once you failed to use good Materials and bad workmanship just know that the next available rain the results will show. Some building do have this type of hidden roof without leakages, build some years back. Go to some schools and some residential houses you will see them. So on this we don’t have any fair of leakage |

spyder880: The first picture. The Contemporary style. Reason: it gives the house this elegant WOW factor. It made the building worth more than the high roof counterpart. It is just beautiful. My reservations: to achieve this roof, it requires a good technical know how, not just any "roofer" can climb up there and deliver this job. 1 Like |

Destiny27:4 by 2 channel will be good for the job. Run away from galvanized pipes right now cause the quality has dropped heavily from what it was before. Depending on your location, budget like #180-250k 1 Like |

rotecch77: That's exactly what made hidden roof the most expensive type of roof. The additional cost of: - insulation - waterproofing - cladding - felting You just have to do everything and anything to prevent water. ________ Everything in picture below was just to prevent water from having direct contact with the concrete structure. It cost us over 800k just to achieve that alone. Then, when it comes to felting. The cost of purchasing and installing original Italian roofing felt can roof some bungalows.

jabolo: To achieve this, we cannot do our roofing the conventional way. I’m working on a project like this and we intend to use SIP (Structural Insulated Panels) roofing panels for the roof and the internal partitions. There’s a guy selling it in Ajah, Lagos. 1 Like

EgunMogaji2: Baba, you want thick pipes near you? Just drive down to Gate, Ibadan (Iron Market), you’ll reject some of the pipes they’ll give you because they’re too thick and heavy. I had that experience when I wanted to buy 4in - 5in galvanized pipes for a spiral staircase I constructed 2 months ago. If you’re in Lagos, visit Owode-Onirin. You’ll see water corporation type of galvanized pipes 2 Likes |

michlins: Thanks a lot for the response. Is it an overkill to use H channel 6 by 3 for the frame work (4 vertical legs), 4 by 2 for the horizontal frame work and 3 inches for the tank base? |

spyder880: I like the high roof and the all-round cantilever sit-out. This is a clever use of space and gives the building some class. However, the prototype high roof is just too basic and does not give the building justice. In fact, in comparison, the high roof is disadvantaged compared to the flat roof because of the basic presentation of the high roof. In reality, when actualising the high roof concept with all the cantilever sit-out, the roof will look close to the picture I have attached which is a classier, aesthetically more pleasing roof than any flat roof out there. Flat roof for me is boring and lazy for residential buildings. Flat roof is for commercial buildings like retail park. We are currently witnessing the increasing adoption of flat roof for mostly in the Lagos axis. I don't accept the idea that it is modern. It is not. It is monotonous, boring and lazy. Flat roof is first and foremost for budgeting reasons before aesthetics reasons. Flat roof has a higher maintenance cost and a higher propensity to fail. Flat roof is yet to catch on in the Niger Delta regions. A good high roof on a building is like a jeep. The Igbos describe a good jeep as "the one who stands to greet kings". 3 Likes 1 Share

n3xt: I was counting on you. Perhaps share details (on the linked thread if you prefer), might help some here. Seems it has to be something considered at the Architectural stage, something my build missed out on. Things like - strengthening the wooden decks, specifying the correct roof linings, providing access (wooden stairs), providing adequate ventilation etc Perhaps a potential viable business is retrofitting these into the gigantic traditional roof spaces that have been the norm. Just needs thinking out of the box to do the math and make this cost effective and therefore a no-brainer. I trust our people though - they will provide a million reasons why ths should not be done. 1 Like |
