Michigan Dogman

Many folks allegedly have encountered the Dogman of Michigan, and they’ve offered consistent reports of what it looks like: bigger and taller than any human being, covered in fur and alternating between walking on two and four legs. The earliest reported sighting occurred in 1961, with photographic evidence to boot. Kind of makes those “beware of dog” signs seem quaint, doesn’t it?

Hopkinsville Goblins

What is that deer looking at? And what is that eerie light in the background? If you believe the legend, you’re looking at a sighting of creatures in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, that are of another world. The original sighting occurred in 1955, when Lucky Sutton and Billy Ray Taylor saw a UFO land and even shot at some creatures that emerged. “No sign of the creatures was ever found,” says Brian Dunning of the Skeptoid podcast, “but one account states that some luminous green glow was discovered near a fence, and was gone by the next day.”

Kushtaka

The folklore of the Kushtaka, which translates to “land otter people,” has its roots in the indigenous people of Alaska. The tricksters, according to EsoterX, “spend a lot of [their] time trying to lure unsuspecting humans away from their homes in order to turn them into more Kushtaka.” But don’t worry. If they’re not interested in turning you, they’ll just viciously rip you apart instead. Maybe we’ll skip the otter habitat next time we visit the zoo.

Jersey Devil

The original story of the Jersey Devil, according to Brian Regal of the Center for Skeptical Inquiry, is borne of political intrigue, smear campaigns and sabotaging the name of local politician Daniel Leeds. The legend says that Leeds’ wife gave birth to a demon-like child “with horse-like head and bat-like wings.” She cried, “Oh, let this one be a devil!” Immediately after its birth, it flew out of the Leeds’ home and, according to many modern sightings, continues to terrorize those it encounters.

Rougarou

The Cajun legend of the Rougarou, according to History.com, describes the monster as a “bayou-dwelling werewolf with glowing red eyes and razor-sharp teeth.” It’s also believed the Rougarou is a cursed human who must shed another man’s blood to break the curse and become human again. If we ever have a Rougarou encounter, we’re not planning on doing it that favor.

Wendigo

The Wendigo is an Inuit-based monster whose name translates to “the evil spirit that devours mankind.” Ghosts of the Prairie describes it as a spirit with a “voracious appetite for human flesh.” It’s also said to stand 15 feet tall and have a grotesquely long tongue. Legend has it that the Wendigo monster is formed when human beings resort to cannibalism, so just try not to do that and you should be fine.

Bunny Man Bridge

Urban Legends Online tells this story in full detail, but even a quick summary is enough to spook even the most jaded individual: When Marcus Lawster escaped a Virginia mental institution mid-transfer in 1904, authorities were disturbed to find him by following a trail of mutilated, half-eaten bunny remains. At the end of this morbid trail was Lawster himself, hanging from the top of a tunnel. Now the tunnel is called the Bunny Man Bridge, and if you visit it at midnight, the Bunny Man just might grab you.

It begins with a 1940s Russian experiment in which scientists kept five World War II political prisoners alive for 15 days with an experimental gas stimulant. It ends with a growing, gnawing addiction, grotesque distortions of the body, and blood. Lots and lots of blood.

Carmen Winstead

A lot of kids get picked on at school, but few exact revenge like Carmen Winstead. At age 17, the Paranormal Guide details, bullies pushed Winstead into an open sewer as a prank during a school fire drill. But she never reemerged, having broken her neck on impact. When questioned by police, her killers all lied and said it was an accident. Months later, however, those students started receiving messages and emails that read simply, “They Pushed Her.” Then some unknown source disfigured and murdered the girls who killed Winstead. Their bodies were found in the same sewer.

Monster expert Mark Opsasnick tells the Washington Post three variations on the Maryland Goatman story, but our personal favorite involves “a scientist who worked in the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center who was experimenting on goats, and the experiment went astray, and he started attacking cars with an ax.” Sounds like someone needs to retake his high-school chemistry class.

However, the gate to this area requires seven keys for seven locks. Maybe you should keep the locksmith out of this and leave the steps untouched.

The Well to Hell

When they lowered audio equipment into the hole, they were shocked to retrieve recordings of what sounded just like humans screaming in unending pain. Many of the scientists left the site immediately, but those who stayed were treated to the sight of a winged demon. You can listen to the audio yourself, but don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Kashima Reiko

She crawled away to seek help, but passed out on the tracks of the Meishin Expressway, where a passing train sliced her in half. Here’s the most terrifying part of this urban legend: Now that you’ve heard the story, the vengeful ghost of Kashima Reiko will appear in your bathroom sometime within the next month. Be sure to keep that bathroom door locked.
