The senator representing Bayelsa-East senatorial district, Mr. Ben Murray-Bruce, has said the application of federal character and quota system in the country has impeded national development.
Murray-Bruce said for the country to make progress, “Nigeria must say goodbye to ethnicity and say hello to merit.”
The senator, who stated this on his official Twitter handle on Wednesday, stressed that quota system had impeded progress.
He said advocates of federal character should compare the progress that the country made between 1960 and 1966 before the introduction of the quota system and the “retrogression” made after 1966, when it was introduced.
He said for Nigeria to make progress, ethnicity must be jettisoned while merit must be promoted as the only yardstick for the management of the economy.
He said, “Nigeria must make progress though tribe and tongue may differ. The only way to do that is by saying goodbye to ethnicity and hello to merit.
“Compare the progress that Nigeria made before the quota system (1960-66) and the retrogression we have made since 1966 till date. The difference is clear.
“Federal character cannot make an electrical power station work. It can’t make refinery work. Only merit can ensure this.
“As a result of federal character, Nigeria Airways went from 30 aircraft to bankruptcy and a debt of over $60m by the year 2000. Quota system and federal character lead to a sense of entitlement in beneficiaries and resentment in others. Merit is a better way of life.”

Bros you don't have any point. Obasanjo and IBB are the only two former presidents to be indicted for corruption. The reports of the Pius Okigbo and Ndudi Elumelu panels are easily accessible!! GEJ has not even been indicted by any investigative panel!! I don't remember Nigeria having a statute of limitations on crimes committed years ago.

Unless we want to set this country on fire, Buhari can either probe all the past presidents or forget about the probes in totality

Bross Chukwudi, i never said GEJ has ever been indicted with anything, all am saying here is he GEJ would have probe his successor and there about, OBJ would have done same to Gen Abdulsalam . I will continue to respect GEJ, PMB n those in the helms of affairs because i know i will be there someday, my children, friends n family. That is why i don't argue in this section of NL, i also don't n will never insult anyone cuz i respect people no matter you tribe region or race.
