Wudu/Ablution - What is it?


All Muslims are required to do the ritual cleansing (wudu) before performing their prayers. This cleansing was practiced in Christianity as well, and referenced in the Bible. We want to make sure that we are in a physical sense, as well as a spiritual sense, “purified” before we face Allah. Prayer is not accepted if you do not perform wudu.



Importance of performing wudu:


O you who believe! When you intend to offer As-Salât (the prayer), wash your faces and your hands (forearms) up to the elbows, rub (by passing wet hands over) your heads, and (wash) your feet up to ankles. If you are in a state of Janâba (i.e. had a sexual discharge), purify yourself (bathe your whole body). But if you are ill or on a journey or any of you comes from answering the call of nature, or you have been in contact with women (i.e. sexual intercourse) and you find no water, then perform Tayammum with clean earth and rub therewith your faces and hands. Allâh does not want to place you in difficulty, but He wants to purify you, and to complete His Favour on you that you may be thankful. Qur'an - Al-Mâ'idah 5:6

...And Allâh loves those who make themselves clean and pure (i.e. who clean their private parts with dust [i.e. to be considered as soap) and water from urine and stools, after answering the call of nature]. Qur'an - At-Tauba 9:108

Many new reverts don’t see the importance of the requirement of performing wudu. Here is a nice way to look at wudu: If you were preparing to go to a job interview to face your future employer, you would make sure you where clean, your clothes were clean, and that you were presenting yourself the best you possibly could, right? If you were unclean, clothes unclean, and not taking the matter serious, would you get the job? Probably not. So, we must do our very best to put effort and sincerity into our prayers by preparing for them properly. When we pray, we are having “one on one” time with Allah. We are having a spiritual connection directly with Allah at that moment. So, if we can put the effort to present ourselves in a good manner that is expected by a potential employer, shouldn’t we give the same respect to our creator?
