Looking at the pix, what he has is likely Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis, baring histology report, not likely Steven Johnson Syndrome.May not necessarily be the fault of the drug company because these reactions(TEN and SJS) are clearly written out by the drug company as one of the adverse effects of the drug as a warning to whoever is on the medication.Someone should have been able to take a good drug and allergy history before prescribing the medication. However,it is easy to lay blame, sometimes these things happen even after taking a thorough drug and allergy history especially if this is the first episode of drug reaction in the patient.I wish him soonest recovery

This is a case of severe allergic reaction. It's not like the drug is bad/expired. Virtually everybody has experienced one form of allergic reaction or the other to a drug.
I just think GSK should do something to restore the man's health as much as they can due to the magnitude of his own allergic reaction out of goodwill. I don't see how his allergy to their drug that has cured others make them liable/culpable.

I wish the man speedy recovery.

Very enlightened post from you. The doctor is expected to find out from the history of the patient if there's any allergic reactions to some drugs. Tests should have been conducted. In fact, the doctor, GSK and sometimes the patient may be at fault.

I've seen a situations where patients Dont want to wait for test results. They just say doctor, give me something now now.

To be honest I have had many interactions with our doctors, and they just scare me with their general lack of awareness of modern treatments. Patients needs to research their diagnosis and treatment intelligently. They do not even mention the name of the doctor or the hospital and if this case is to be credible the prescriber of the drug must explain his own role.

Severe reaction. With the level of corruption in Nigeria most pharmaceutical companies can get away with selling untested drugs.

Thats what happens when you shun the native doctor. angry

This is indeed very terrible. Wish him speedy recovery.

That said, it would be tough to get compensation from the Company rather focus on the hospital. Below is fully warning about using this tab.

native doctors are even worse! Their own is trial and error at the risk of death because they don't know which herb is toxic or not.

You are mentioning a company's name to seek attention ba Don't worry, you may get the desired attention from their lawyers.

The instructions that come with the drug is enough 'caveat' for them to use as defence and sue you for willfully tarnishing their image without totally establishing the facts and hearing from ALL sides.

E be like say the one wey Abike Dabiri-Erewa do PUNCH, the one wey do Linda and the one wey do the blogger vs Fidelity Bank never do to teach you lesson kwa? Kontunu you hear. . .

Out of Curiosity, has the following been reviewed,
Has the Doctor who prescrobed the drug been interrogated?
Has the chemist/pharmacy where he bought the drug be check? For possible unsold units of same drugh.
Was the drug he bought the Genuine one.
Was there a clear dosage, did he follow the instructions?

I believe some other people would have used this same drugs and achieve desired result.

Focus now should be on redeeming the man's health to the best possible state.

Get well soon Mr Charles.

the pharmaceutical company and the doctor are not at fault ...it is an unfortunate side effect and can happen to anyone with any drug. many drugs people take routinely can cause SJS and other severe drug reactions like cough and cold medications, antibiotics even tramadol boys abuse anyhow. it's just what it is.

Even after taking a drug history one can still come down with SJS. Its unlikely the man has taken allopurinol (Zyloric) before so he wouldnt even know he reacts to it. The man is just unfortunate.

HYPERSENSITIVITY...The doctor who prescribed this medication to him must have been ignorant of his medical record which is a blunder in Molecular medicine.
Thats the reason i prefer good herbal preparation.
Watch out for introduction of herbal medicine into course outline of medical students in Nigeria. The race has started!!!!

My thought too. The drug was an experimental drug and they went ahead to test it on humans in africa. GSK must pay nothing less than 50 million pounds for the crime against humanity they have perpetuated against this innocent soul. As from now on, i stay away from GSK manufactured drugs. I dont want to be another man's lab rat. Nigerian govt should take this up.

Nothing experimental about zyloric. It's been in use for years. FDA certified. It is used to treat gout. Which is a very painful debilitating ailment. Allopurinol (zyloric) has helped patients deal with the symptoms of gout for years. The drug has been a life Davey for a lot of people. It's unfortunate that he reacted this way to the drug. They cannot win a case against GSK because it is clearly stated that SJS MAY occur in the adverse drug reaction section....but they may have a case against the doctor/hospital for not adequately probing.

Woman, who took knee pain tabs, dies of reaction!

A simple dose consumed to relieve knee pain apparently caused the death of a 57-year-old woman in Thane a fortnight ago.

Pratibha Shimpi was prescribed Zyloric, an allopurinol-based drug, manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Pharmaceuticals for the knee pain that was the result of gout. She had been taking two tablets daily for about 15 days, when she developed an adverse drug reaction (ADR).

Gout is a condition caused by increased uric acid in blood, crystals of which get deposited in body joints causing aches.

"Initially she had high grade fever and eventually her skin started shedding. We admitted her to Jupiter hospital in Thane, where she battled for her life for 11 days before she died," said Ashok, Pratibha's husband. The case was first reported in dna on May 2.

The drug reaction is medically termed Steven Johnson's or Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis Syndrome (TENS). This is a rare disorder in which the person's skin burns from the reaction to the drug and is said to affect one of one lakh people. Eventually the top layer of the skin begins to peel off and blisters break out exposing the inner skin which is tender and vulnerable to infection.

Over 70 per cent of the woman's outer skin had shed. She contracted secondary infection and died of multi-organ failure, doctors said.

"Her infection culture tests were positive. For close to a week after admission she was doing okay. But two days before her death she suffered high grade fever. Her urine output reduced drastically and blood pressure dropped," said Dr Mahesh Lombar, consulting physician, Jupiter hospital.

The medicine for the knee pain was prescribed by Dr Preeti Dave, an ayurveda specialist.

In medical literature, Zyloric is known to cause side-effects like TENS. "We are flummoxed at how an ayurvedic doctor prescribed the allopathic drug. I did not know where she got the medicine from until she was hospitalised," Ashok said.

The family spent about Rs5 lakh to treat Pratibha, who was in intensive care for some time. "No intervention worked after the drug reaction set in. Her skin had blackened and it was burning from the inside. She was also put on dialysis after her kidneys failed," the husband said.

According to the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI), 90 medical colleges across the country, including KEM, Nair, Sion and JJ hospitals in Mumbai, have recorded incidence of mild to severe ADR.

In March 2014 alone, 2,862 cases of ADRs were reported under the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI), 222 cases (8%) were reported from BMC-run hospitals – KEM, Sion and Nair hospitals.

Awareness about notifying ADR cases to DCGI is said to be low among private doctors.

Dr Lombar of Jupiter said, "We have not notified DCGI about the ADR case yet. However, I will ask Jupiter hospital to notify the regulatory authorities."

GSK Pharmaceuticals did not respond to a query whether it had given adequate warning on the Zyloric packs.

Pratibha's case story

Pratibha Shimpi, 57, a Thane resident died a fortnight ago, after she suffered reaction to medication she took for knee pain. The medicine, Zyloric, was prescribed by an ayurvedic doctor

The woman suffered what is in medical terms called toxic epidermal necrolysis syndrome (TENS)

Symptoms of this reaction are peeling of the skin, rashes and blisters that arise within a couple of days or up to a couple of weeks after taking the medicine

With the outer skin peeling off, she developed infection and multi-organ failure

TENS is known to be set off by various antibiotics, sulfa drugs, ibuprofen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and medicines to treat gout and seizures or epilepsy

It is necessary to report such cases. Reports can be registered at the toll free number 1800 180 3024

According to the authorities, many cases are unreported as awareness is low and private doctors choose not to do so.

SJS is a fairly common emergency and GSK has listed it in the pamphlet that comes with the drug thereby exonerating them , the vast majority of clients use allopurinol without any adverse effects ..and before we blame the doctor, he would have probably taken a history of previous drug reactions which may or may not have been negative. ..its just an unfortunate situation but its not the fault of the patient, doctor or drug company

As much as I'm not against pharmaceutical drugs, we need to go back to taking natural herbs, because this was the sole purpose for the creation of plants, to heal mankind.

Don't suffer in silence people if you've been suffering from any ailment, let people know, he/she might know someone that knows someone.....

If you don't know something, you seek knowledge. What makes you feel it's a fake drug. What do you know about drugs. SJS is an adverse effect of many sulphur drugs. It can even happen with Fansidar. I have seen one. It's very very unfortunate. Then as for your picture on igbo man! Purge yourself of hatred and envy, you just may go far in life.

This is serious!

By the way, I am not a lawyer, neither am I a pharmacist, but I know that nearly all drugs have side effects. Individuals also react to such drugs differently. I am sure that many people have taken this same drug without the same kind of reaction.

To me, if there is anybody to be dragged to court, it should be the Cardiologist (I doubt if he actually saw the cardiologist in a good hospital) who recommended the drug.

Good luck to you anyway.

There's nothing fake about the drugs and the company isn't liable to any charges.

Steven Johnson Syndrome is a known adverse reaction to many drugs, however occurs only in few persons.

I'm also sure that the company provided such warning on the leaflet accompanying that drug.

Good news is, it's treatable and the drug and all that carry that risk should be withdrawn from the patient.

There's nothing to sue anybody for.

Nobody did wrong there. He simply had an adverse drug reaction which is quite rare but has been numerously documented in medical literature.

Doesn't mean that everybody that takes that drug would react that way, but it happens.

We have organizations like tianshi,GNLD and others that have good alternatives, a little research by the victim would have spared his life, may he RIP.
