Why Are White Collar Jobs Held More Respectably Than Blue Collar Jobs? by Freegift75: 10:33am On Sep 13, 2015
The terms "blue collar" and "white collar" are occupational classifications that distinguish workers who perform manual labor from workers who perform professional jobs.

Historically, blue-collar workers wore uniforms, usually blue, and worked in trade occupations like plumbing, carpentary, Mason, electronic repairers, etc. White-collar workers typically wore white, button down shirts. and worked in office settings. Other aspects that distinguish blue-collar and white-collar workers include earnings and education level.

But the question that bothers most Artisans in Nigeria is:

Why are White Collar Jobs held more respectably
than Blue Collar Jobs?

In our society we hold White Collar Jobs more
respectable than BLue Collar Jobs, even when they make the exact same wage and blue collar people make more generally.

Lets say a Plumber vs a Teacher.
Teachers are more respected in our society, but why?

Or
A banker vs a Carpenter

Why are the Artisans not valued in Nigerian society to the extent they are so much ridiculed when compared to the white-collar jobers?

Why are 99% of Nigerian parents not willing for their children to become Artisans?

In what way could the government restore esteem to the blue-collar jobs in Nigeria?

Nigeria: Shekarau Seeks End to 'White Collar Job' Mentality

By Innocent Oweh

Abuja — Minister of Education, Ibrahim
Shekarau has said the era where young
graduates from Nigerian tertiary institutions
look forward to the proverbial "White-Collar"
jobs are over.

He noted that with the present realities in the
country, entrepreneurship should be a way of
life for Nigerians.

Shekarau stated this at the flagged-off of the
2014 Annual National Entrepreneurship Week
(ANEW) and stakeholders' sensitisation forum in
Abuja, said entrepreneurship education has
been successfully inculcated into the course
content of all universities and other tertiary
institutions in the country.

The Minister who was represented by Executive
Secretary of the National Universities
Commission (NUC), Julius Okojie said, "The era
when Nigerian graduates even before
graduation crave for "White-Collar" jobs are
gone and no longer in existence.

"We must change the psyche and culture of
Nigerian graduates from that of a job-seeker to
an employer of labour.

"Government has since realised that if Nigeria
must adapt to global best practices,
entrepreneurship development must be
institutionalised.

"It is obvious that Entrepreneurship Education
will enable the youths take advantage of the
emerging economic transformation taking
place in Nigeria, thereby, strengthening their
individual financial capacity and collective
national economic growth.

"It is against this backdrop that the Federal
Government in 2006 issued a Presidential
directive through the Federal Ministry of
Education making Entrepreneurship Education
compulsory for all students of higher learning
since 2007/2008 academic session," he added.
