The Oodua Nationalist Coalition, (ONAC) has urged security operatives to probe the prospect of the involvement of thugs loyal to the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) in the renewed spate of kidnappings in the hitherto peaceful South West area. ONAC said it is the tradition of PDP to keep armed thugs paid by the state which they use during and after elections adding that the lost of access to power and free money by the PDP has let loose their chain of armed brigands on the society.
In a statement issued on Tuesday and made available to Irohinoodua, ONAC which is a coalition of several Pan-Yoruba groups asked the Directorate of State Security, (DSS) and the Police Authorities to investigate the link between the pre-election threats by the PDP thugs to make the South West ungovernable and the current cases of kidnapping in the region.
“Nine operatives of the Department of State Security, (DSS) were killed in Lagos. A bank was raided in Ikorodu recently when some police ratings were killed. The wife of a prominent journalist, Mrs Toyin Nwosu was kidnapped at gun point. Almost on a daily basis, South West fishermen and farmers in the Ikorodu area are being harassed and killed by armed men who come through the water ways.” ONAC in the statement issued by the group’s Deputy Official, Ayo Sokenu stated.
The group noted “These are clear signals of orchestrated campaigns to make the South West ungovernable. There can’t be peace and development in Nigeria when lives and properties are unsafe. There cannot be any talk of foreign investment when human lives are as worthless as a cockroach on the sidewalk.”
According to ONAC, prior to the 2015 elections, thugs loyal to PDP had vowed to make the South West ungovernable in case they lost the election “We see what is going on as a fulfillment of that threat.”
The group condemned the Yoruba political leadership for lack of foresight and their preference for political power at the expense of providing enduring security for their economic and cultural initiatives. ‘One of the greatest errors of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo was that he created an economic fiefdom without security against internal and external attacks. When the soldiers came in 1966, all his achievements were overwhelmed by thugs in military uniforms. The result was about 40 years of setback for the Yoruba Nation.” The group said the SW governors should emulate their counterparts in the North who have armed vigilantes in all the states and local governments.
“In Kaduna state for instance, the office of the vigilante is more like a huge police headquarters. The members are well trained and are armed with sophisticated weapons to ward off violent crimes.The fact that the SW is vulnerable is responsible for the movement of armed gangs into the region.”
ONAC said that the Yoruba producing the current Vice President comes to nothing. “The position of VP means nothing. He could be removed at any time. He is a spare tire that will never be used and even when used, it’s only for a limited role. What should matter to the Yoruba people is the restructuring of Nigeria, state police, the return of South West Universities, like Obafemi Awolowo University, (OAU) seized at gun point in 1976, regional customs and the restructuring of the economy to boost regional initiatives and self actualization.”
