There was a time the whole of God's people were under Catholic and the Pope is seen as being next to God. The people believe and follow everything the Pope says and many of God's people have no access to the Bible. God's people were under the manipulation of men who sees themselves has higher than what they really are. The people of God thought they have no direct access to God, they had little or no relationship with God, and they don't know the word of God.

All of these continued until Martin Luther declared "solo scriptura" i.e the scripture alone. It is the Christian doctrine that the Bible is the supreme authority in all matters of doctrine and practice. But it's hold on Christians had extended over time. God's people tried to be true to the Bible but because the Bible has so many interpretations it led to division. Every group or denomination thinks they are the ones that are truly following the Bible. Each group claims that the other group had gone astray from the Bible and because of this Christians where criticizing each other, strife continued to grow in the Church, hatred, suspicion and fear took over God's people.
Great fear came upon the Church, for the people of God was afraid that they would go to hell if they don't get the doctrine right. Pressure was upon God's people to find the right doctrine, the one that would take them to heaven. The people of God knows very little about God, all they know is what is written within the pages of the Bible and any knowledge of God beyond what is in the Bible was termed heresy.

So people where afraid of going beyond the Bible, the Church was constrain to the boundaries assigned by the bible, in fact to them there is nothing like 'beyond the Bible'. The Church develop the idea that the Bible contains all the revelation that God could ever give man. In fact there was no revelation outside the Bible and this had been helpful and had protected the Church from those who claim they have received a higher revelation and higher knowledge of mysteries of God. But it also revealed the carnality and the spiritual immaturity of the Church.

Now the first Christians had only the Old Testament and they didn't use it to create a boundary for themselves. They didn't restrict their knowledge of God to only that which is in the Old Testament. But instead their Bible was a head start for greater revelation, it catapulted them into greater realms of the mysteries of God.

Look at Paul, after he got converted and filled with the Holy Spirit he went to Arabia, re-studying his Bible for years. And when he came back he revealed such powerful revelation that is far beyond the once in the Old Testament. If Paul lived in our days he would had been greatly criticized by the Church. We would ask him; "where did you see those things you are preaching in the Bible?". We would criticize him for saying "eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before the world began,". We would question him "where in the whole book of Genesis do you see God giving any promise before He started creating the World?". "Where are you getting all this revelation of yours, it is definitely not from the Bible". Yes, Peter, John and every other writer of the New Testament would be termed heresy for written things that are not in the Old Testament. If Paul lived in our days he won't have as much revelation that he had. Fear would have causes him to question the Holy Spirit and prevent the Holy Spirit from taking him into deeper revelation of Christ.

The early believers were entering into a new thing that they know nothing about, so they had to trust the Holy Spirit. But today we have figure it out, we have an established religion and a religious book (the Bible). We don't need the Holy Spirit, all we have to do is formulate the correct doctrine that is base on the Bible and practice our notion of true Christianity so as to make it to Heaven.

The only time the Holy Spirit comes into the picture is in the doctrines of Holy Ghost baptism, the gifts of the Spirit and during our argument on who's interpretation of the Bible is more correct. The Church is structured in a way that is against growth, a way that involves little or no trust in the Holy Spirit. The Church is ruled by our interpretation of the Bible instead of our Lord Jesus Christ through his Spirit. We have taken Jesus off the thrown and put the Bible instead, that is why the Church is so divided and that is why we are so confuse.

We need to allow Christ take back his throne, we need to learn to trust completely in the Spirit, and we need to replace "Sola Scriptura" with "Sola Christos". Yes, Christ alone, let Christ be all. Let Christ be our doctrine, let Christ be our interpretation of the Bible, let Christ be our Christian practice, and let Christ be our Lord - the only one anointed by God for the sake of our salvation and not a religious book.

It is time that we go beyond the religious book and reach out to Christ.
