We can all do a lot more with our lives if we apply ourselves properly and when given the right push. Last week, I got myself into a discussion on mentorship with an audience in Benin City. We aired our views freely without sentiments and apologies. Some of them, to my amazement, outrightly told me they don’t have need of a mentor. (With varying reasons).

You see, anyone that says they have no need of a mentor hasn’t experienced life yet and they most likely haven’t tapped into the realm of dreaming BIG.

As a strategy for helping young people succeed in school, career and life; and helping ladies and gentlemen build strong relationships and marriages, mentorship works. It helps give people the confidence, resources, and support they need to achieve their potential. It takes people from nothing to something; activating, motivating, and directing them. Mentorship changes our lives positively.

Personally, I doubt the theory; that PEOPLE CHANGE WITH TIME when they want to. If people change when they want to change then the need for education, teachers and role models are uncalled for. People change when they meet the right people carrying the message of change in any area. I have met some in my lifetime. Whenever you see people who emerged on the scene and took over their space by storm in their calling or career, they didnt do it alone. They didnt go as others went and were overwhelmed. They simply stepped into a bigger room; a room filled with more leaders, more influencers, more achievers. They connected to, and remained teachable under people who have achieved authentic results in their privtate and cooperate lives.

What You Should Know About Mentors?

Mentors are people who:

1) Take an interest in developing another person's career and life.

2) Have an interpersonal, as well as a professional relationship with those whom they mentor.

3) Advance the person's career/professional goals in directions most desired by the individual.

4) Tailor mentoring skills and content to the individual, including adjustments due to differences in culture, ethnicity, gender, and so on.

5) Helps you achieve stability in life, marry the right person and at the right time; further lending their experience to you to ensure you and your spouse raise an examplary family.

Why Is Mentoring Important?

Mentoring is very important to your success in life, because:

1) The experiences and networks of professional contacts your mentor helps you to accrue will go a long way in helping you secure your career.

2) The knowledge that someone is committed to your progress; someone who can give you solid advice and be your advocate, can help to lower your stress and build confidence.

3) Constructive interaction with a mentor and participation in collective activities he or she arranges promote your engagement in the field.

How To Find The Right Mentor.

Finding a mentor has never been the problem. Anybody can claim to be a Life Coach and all that. The problem lies in finding the right person; someone in the mould of your loving and concerned parents who would want to see you succeed. See these tips to find the right mentor.

1) Where does your passion lie? What is your purpose in life?

For example, I am a medical doctor and I hope to specialise in Family Medicine. In this light, I have no business having a Public Health Consultant or a Radiologist as my mentor.

Secondly, I have been building a speaking brand patiently over time. My top passion is to be one of the most sought after public speakers in Africa in twenty years' time. Wisdom neccesitates that I seek mentorship from top speakers in the class of Nigeria's Fela Durotoye.

2) What are your professional goals? What do you hope to achieve at specific times in your career. Think it through; and come up with clarity and precision to choose your mentor.

3) Consider your value system.

Value system is very important. If you align with someone who shares same value system with your deeply cherished values, obedience to him/her becomes effortless for you.

4) Take note that he/she must clearly have what you need.

Qualities Of A Good Mentor.

Look out for the following.

1) He/She leads by example. He does what he tells you to do.

2) He/She must be a success in his/her marriage.

3) He has seasoned experience in your field and willing to share skills, knowledge and expertise with you.

4) Has good contacts/network and helps you to navigate the polictics and bureacracy of your career.

5) Has a good reputation for developing others.

6) Wants you to be independent by fostering reciprocal trust and respect.

7) Builds your self confidence and self image by communicating hope and optimism.

8.) Is respected by others/has credibility.

9) Has up to date knowledge in the area you seek development in.

10) Above all, wants you to succeed.

Your Responsibilities As a Mentee.

1) Don’t just receive from your mentor. Seek out ways to help him/her. That’s even the best way to learn and get him/her see you as a loyal and trustworthy person.

2) In addition, remain humble and teachable.

Bonus Information

Yes, it’s okay to have more than one mentor. I have one for my career in medicine; another for my passion and purpose in public speaking; another who has a fantastic marriage I and my fiancee look up to and seek out their counsel always. Finally, I have my pastor as my spiritual mentor/father too.

If someone you admire is seperated from you by a great distance, I believe that books are a great way of getting into the mind of who you would love to be mentored by (if such a person is a published author).

However, mentorship by correspondence is not what I have discussed. There is room for that quite alright, but it has no comparison whatsoever to physical mentorship.
