Another propaganda in futility. What is the usefulness of a gas cylinder without a gas cooker. A gift to majority of people who do not have use for it. The propaganda is dead on arrival.

What kind of Policy Statement from GMD is this? When one compare this faulty policy direction with the fact that 70% of our people are in the rural areas with no accessible to them and the fact that empty gas cylinder is not the gas, the biting poverty across rural and urban centres in the country, one begin to wonder which kin people dey lead us sef
am disappointed with the thought frame of Mr Kachikwu GMD of NNPC.

There is nothing wrong with this policy statement if the mode of achieving it, is carefully planned, researched, articulated and implemented in a way that benefits the common man, and reaches the largest number of communities. undecided

The supply chain and retail distribution channel strategy has to be methodically reviewed, and made to work effectively. How many petrol stations currently retail LPG gas in their outlets?? How close are these stations to the urban and rural areas? shocked Where there are no petrol stations or gas plants serving a community, can LPG mini skids be set up, or LPG retail sales outlets?

What is the ratio of gas refilling plants to the populace? Do we currently have 1 gas plant serving 1,000 homes or 10,000? These are the kind of things that need to be carefully researched and properly verified. If the number of gas bottling plants and petrol stations retailing LPG gas are few, how do we increase them? A lot of petrol station do not even sell cooking gas currently, and they need to be encouraged to do so. wink

How can people in each community be empowered to own and refill their gas cylinders? Please note that these cylinders come in sizes of 3kg, 6kg, 12.5kg, 25kg and 50kg. There is no subsidy on LPG gas in this country, and the price fluctuates according to international rate.

Everyone can choose the sizes most economical for their average family. A few LPG sales outlets are currently giving out cylinders at subsidized rates to new and existing customers, but each time you refill from them a small surcharge to cover cost of your cylinder is added to your bill. This enables you to pay off the cost of the cylinder in 6 months or less. cheesy

In many rural areas, people have access to kerosene. If govt is serious about partnering with entrepreneurs in such areas, to build infrastructure for sale and storage of LPG Gas, then their objective can be achieved. But do the first things, first - put the storage and distribution channels in place in all local govt areas, by establishing new ones and overhauling existing ones. Train and certify the operators of such LPG retail channels on health, safety and prevention of fire/gas hazards to avoid accidents. shocked

After this is done, then you can commence free or subsidized distribution of gas cylinders to the populace through their cooperative societies and community associations, or any other means that can be found to be effective. shocked

The problem is often that people are not sincere in supporting such govt policies, on the butanisation programme. It is often poorly researched and implemented. They launch it with fanfare for like one month, but abandon it after 9 months with nothing concrete to show for it. angry There should be a policy monitoring and evaluation scheme to drive such projects, and constantly achieve set targets and goals.

India, Indonesia and a few other countries embarked on similar programmes in the past and were very successful in getting their citizens to convert to using gas for their domestic, vehicular and industrial needs. undecided

We dont need cylinder, they need to reduce price of gas
2900naira per 12.5 ltr doesnt make sense
Kerosine is now 50naira
I dont know where it is sold for that price but in PH it is #3,500.

Guy, it costs just =N=6,000 - =N=8,000 for a 6kg cylinder and burner. And you can save up for it. Some people spend much more than that, buying a pair of jeans and shirts for an outing.

NNPC does not have to give out the cylinders for free. In fact, they should not. It will be grossly abused. NNPC can sell the cylinders at N3,000 for a 12.5kg cylinder. Then, reduce the price of re-filling gas by up to 50%. This, I suppose will acheive greater success in the policy of making Nigerians use more of cooking gas than kerosine or firewood.

I agree, but if you do not give out the cylinders for free or subsidise it heavily, many Nigerians would not switch to using cooking gas. sad

In order to reduce the cost of refilling the gas, then the NLNG who is the primary supplier of gas needs to lower its prices or bring them down by less than 50%! undecided Currently, NLNG supplies the domestic market with cooking gas, at international price. There is no subsidy on gas, like you have on petrol. If forex rates fluctuate today, LPG prices also fluctuate in tandem with it. So what can the retailers do? shocked
