Following criticism of the Federal Government’s plan to spend N16.4 billion on the celebration of Nigeria’s 50 years of independence, President Goodluck Jonathan has slashed the event’s budget to N9.5 billion.
The change is reflected in the latest supplementary budget presented to the National Assembly for consideration and passage. In a letter to the National Assembly, the president listed the areas which the cuts affect and said it was a “slight amendment.” Read more: http://africannewslive.co m/?p=7147

ALSO:FOR the second time within two weeks, President Goodluck Jonathan has sent an amendment proposal to the National Assembly on 2010 Appropriation Act.
The first was on the revenue framework to be based on revising the assumptions for oil production of 2.2million barrels per day and oil price benchmark of US$60 per barrel.
The first revision will imply aggregate revenue for the federal government budget of N2.392trillion and a deficit of about N1.829 trillion based on the proposed amended budget’s level of expenditure.
However, the latest, which is the second request dated July 7, 2010 and addressed to the Senate President, Senator David Mark, was to seek adjustment to some sub-heads and a downward review or removal of some allocations to some of the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).
The affected MDAs which have their allocations reviewed or completely withdrawn were Office of Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Ministry of Information and Communications, the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and National Orientation, the Ministry of Women Affairs, the Ministry of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the Ministry of Aviation, the National Planning Commission and the National Assembly Office.
But the amendment still proposed a total expenditure of N6.6 billion for the celebration of Nigeria at 50.
The fresh proposal indicated that the Office of the SGF would now spend N3.3 billion instead of N6.3 billion, but other subheads had been added to the reduction made by President Jonathan.
A breakdown of the new proposal under the SGF office shows that 50th independence anniversary parade will cost N860 million, branded gifts and souvenirs N450 million; accommodation and logistics for invited guests N700 million, while security and protocol will cost N400 million.
The Ministry of Information and Communications is now to spend N1.7 billion instead of the earlier N1.2 billion. The ministry will spend N1 billion on special reports, N400 million on publication of compendium and N320 million for jingles and adverts.
Aviation Ministry is to spend N2.2 billion on Abuja Airport renovation and provision of additional parking space and equipment for safe airport parking at five airports at the cost of N250 million.
First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, will spend N50 million on visits to special homes, orphanages, prisons and selected hospitals, while N20 million will be used in sponsoring a special session of the National Children Parliament and another N20 million will be used to organise a party for 1,000 children.
Other ministries to spend part of the anniversary fund include, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, N600 million; Ministry of Culture and Tourism, N820 million; State House, N215 million; National Assembly Office, N100 million and the National Planning Commission, N135 million.

And yet Sulaiman came out to spill bunkum about billions not spent on independence celebrations as if Nigerians are like them with short memories.
Anyway, its only their kit and kin that have shirt memories and thus can't remember events of just five years.
El Rufai is absolutely right as I don't know why they came out defending the undefendable. Silence they say is golden as they should have kept quite on this one.

men! u cant imagine my amazement on the other thread where wailers are busy calling el-rufai all sorts of unprintable names as if we were not there in 2014 when gold plated i-phones where freely given to guest!

none of them calling elrufai names even take out time to notice that the article itself is filled with calculation errors!

besides, is there any expenditure during GEJ's tenure that doesn't run into 100s of millions or billions??

after reading comments on that thread, i was so ashamed of our youths!

Thank goodness this was archived.

Only delusional wailers would believe Jonathan spent less than N70m on the independence celebrations.

Just imagine N400+ million budgeted for 'souvenirs and gifts' alone. What audacious thieves those people were.

Hopefully this triggers a thorough probe into all past independence celebrations since 2010.

A Lot of wailers are Kids and wail for no reason, blinded by their hate for PMB,
when i read GEJ's denial of the Billions earlier today, i laughed at his foolishness, he should have let sleeping dogs lie.
the records are there even for the Blind to see, Billions were spent repeatedly and it was all over the news..there was always an outcry from the opposition then on projected expenditure for the celebrations every year.. Now, months after his massive failure at the polls he's still clueless and doesnt know when to keep shut. 66million Pathetic!

Thats the beauty of history,it always comes back to clear any form of ambiguity or lies purported by those who think they are best at it. You can't change history. Even though the figures might nt be entirely correct,it stil stands that billions were deposited into the past independent celebrations and not millions as canvassed by gej and his unswerving supporters.

Are you guys stupid or plain retarded, In the thread on front page it was specified that the independent budget was for 2012-2014.
The statement also mentioned that 2010 was the only one with a large budget because it was a golden jubilee celebration. Liar Rufai posted billions for each of the 5 years and was only believed by rancid dolts like y'all.
Maybe if you actually read the statement before posting you'll won't have wrote this crap.
Excerpts from the statement below
For the record, a breakdown of our spending for this event between 2012 and 2014 goes thus; 2012-107.6million; 2013-45million and 2014 had 180million. So, the question here is where did the billions as claimed by El-rufai emanate from? Even though that of 2010 and 2011 are not handy now, but it should be known that they all fall within the same bracket as the one stated, except that the 2010 anniversary was a golden one when the country marked her 50 year of independence. But even then , not such outrageous sum was either budgeted or expended
