Nigeria: From One Clueless President to Another Clueless President?

If many Nigerians said the immediate past president of the largest democracy in Africa was clueless due to his lack of administrative experience and executive expertise in governance at the national level after his executive failures as the governor of one of the most underdeveloped states in Nigeria with a small population of about two million people, but collecting one of the largest annual federal revenue allocations of more than N170 billion every year that he failed to use to develop his state and improve the lives of his people; what then will they call the new president who has long years of administrative experience in executive government from when he was a military state governor to a federal commissioner and then Head of State of Nigeria?
Has he shown us that he is not as clueless as his predecessor?
Lest we forget, experience does not guaranty competence or expertise in office.

The most important priority of the government is national security and that goes beyond the challenges of defeating the ruthless Boko Haram terrorists in the northern region, but also extends to stopping the further incursions of the trespassing Fulani herdsmen attacking and killing innocent farmers and their families in the middle belt and other states in Nigeria; tackling the increasing crimes of armed robbery, illegal oil bunkers. kidnappings, rape, child and sex trafficking and illegal drug dealers.

All these crimes claiming thousands of lives, injuring thousands of others and destroying millions of properties have been caused by administrative failures and shortcomings of the government over the years. And the causes have been analyzed and published for both public knowledge and the benefit of the government. But these reports have been ignored by the Nigerian government, because the political leaders in power are more engaged in the political power struggle of their ruling class than in the safety, security and welfare of the majority of the citizens.

The change of government administration has not changed the lives of majority of Nigerians who are still faced with the nightmarish realities of the horrible conditions of living in the most populous country in Africa with the largest economy, but where the majority of the people are among the poorest of the poor in Africa with increasing population of millions of boys and girls of school age out of school and increasing population of millions of unemployed graduates of secondary schools and tertiary schools. And both the millions of children out of school and millions of unemployed youths are regular recruits for criminal gangs of cultists and sectarian armies of terrorists making Nigeria one of the most dangerous countries in the world.

Last Sunday, October 11 was the annual United Nations' International Day of the Girl Child in the world with the global focus on more than 60 million girls out of school, including the over 6.4 million girls out of school in Nigeria, which is the worst record on earth today. But there was not a single statement from President Muhammadu Buhari on what his government is doing to address this emergency that is threatening the national security of Nigeria, because majority of the criminals making lives insecure in the country were children of poor mothers who were underprivileged girls who never went to school decades ago and without going to school became handicapped without the basic academic and professional qualifications to get good well paying jobs to provide for the feeding, education and welfare of their children who were born in abject poverty and ended up either dropping out of school or not having good formal education.

On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare 11 October as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.

This year, as the international community assesses progress under the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) since their implementation in 2000 and sets goals to be achieved by 2030, girls born at the turn of the millennium have reached adolescence, and the generation of girls born this year will be adolescents in 2030. As we reflect on the achievements of the past 15 years and plan sustainable development goals for the next 15, it is an opportune time to consider the importance of social, economic, and political investment in the power of adolescent girls as fundamental to breaking the intergenerational transmission of poverty, violence, exclusion and discrimination and to achieving equitable and sustainable development outcomes.

"The newly adopted Sustainable Development Goals rightly include key targets for gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. They offer an opportunity for a global commitment to breaking intergenerational transmission of poverty, violence, exclusion and discrimination – and realizing our vision of a life of dignity for all."

~ Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

President Muhammadu Buhari was busy rushing batches of ministerial nominees to the Nigerian senate, from his own own shortlist, shortlist of his ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC) dictated by their political godfather, Asiwaju Tinubu and shortlist of OBJ, the boss of all bosses of Nigerian political mafiosi. Of course, the political battle of power started with the political hounding of the senate president, Senator Bukola Saraki whom they have to bully into their game plan so that he cannot challenge or change their political master plan.

President Buhari has dumped the mantra of "Change" and chants of "Sai Baba! Sai Buhari!" are now far from the resonating crescendo echoing in his ears during the 2015 presidential campaigns. The honeymoon is over. The one and only incorruptible President of Nigeria is now playing political musical chairs with ministerial nominees. Nigerians are now seeing what the fearless political commentator, Dr. Femi Aribisala has called "the defeat of President Buhari's idealism", widely published in several newspapers and on websites yesterday.
Enjoy the political drama of Change. grin

. A new generation party is what we need. But the corrupt political ruling class will use money and power to divide and rule the youths.

@Orikinla, I know you to be a lover of Buhari and a virulent critic of Jonathan but for you to come to this position makes me believe in the paradox 'foul is fair, fair is foul' as echoed by the witches in the book, Macbeth. Permit me to express my utmost respect to your straight-face disposition to issues and do remember that, YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

I'm surprised by Orikinla's posting of this article considering his antecedents but I'm not surprised by Buhari's behavior and that's also taking into cognizance of his antecedents.

Do not blame our 'leaders', blame the citizenry. Nigerian is a country with the highest concentration of brainless people .

Many people are too busy chanting 'sai baba' to know that Buhari is really erasing the tenets of democracy and taking us back to dictatorship and the rule of one-man...one powerful man. He works with a few hands and deceive Nigerians that they are the ones he trusts to bring abot his change. He does not delegate duties, except to a few he 'trusts'.

1. Running the country as a sole administrator for six months now is how not to be a 'reformed democrat' he claims to be.

2. Treating the VP like an aide and sidelining him in decision making. All the man does is to receive Buhari and wave him bye at the airport or represnt his master who is too old to strain his energy, at less important functions. Now, he has been denied nominating who'd work with him as AGF to re arrange our laws.

3. If I were Ita Enang, I'd resign my position. If the President cannot find him fit as SA(National Assembly) to hand him #TheList, why did he appoint him? It was embarrassing watching the man smile for the camera, while accompanying the CoS.

4. The new set of Ministers, might not be given a free hand to work cos they have been labelled as noise makers.

@OP

You have to give the new government some time. Buhari was sworn in at the end of May meaning he has been in power for 4 months out of a mandated 48 months. Ministerial appointments were slow to materialise but I think there were valid reasons for the delay. Ministers coordinate the functioning of every section of Nigeria. Why not give it another 4-6 months of Ministers being in place, and working with the support and backing of the President, before you write off a four months old regime?

I will give an example. You can be a brilliant architect supervising a commercial building project. You may have drawn up an inspired and well-regarded design masterpiece. Yet you will look ordinary if you do not have an equally competent foreman or site manager, in place, who is your link with those who do the real work. It is about hierarchy and delegating correctly. Buhari now has his 'site managers' in place. Get behind him and give him reasonable time to deliver. 4 months is a joke for how severely damaged Nigeria is. Any reasonable Nigeria who truly knows, in detail, the damage the PDP has done over 16 years will realise the challenge the APC is facing and would thus be willing to give Buhari time to reverse this damage so that forward motion can begin.
