I got married in 1997 in a very quiet but beautiful wedding ceremony. It was the most memorable day of my life not just because it was my day but a day I had always looked forward to because I was getting married to the best man on earth..... Paul. Our marriage seemed to be perfect,everything was going well with us until my husband lost his job. It was the most trying period of our lives as I was a complete housewife at that time. .. My hubby and I began to do menial jobs,to make ends meet and my Mother-in-law was most supportive...
We hoped,and prayed for a better life and God heard our prayers. A year after, my hubby got a better job far away from home and I had mixed feelings. I was happy that we were going to have a better life but I was also sad because it was the first time that I would be without my hubby....It was a very lonely world for me as I had no friends to talk to except my mother in law. I visited most of the times and she was very loving and caring. I soon got out of my shell and began to socialise. I attended church meetings more often and exchanged pleasantries with my neighbours and not long after, I made two friends- Tricia and Rosie. These two ladies in their mid-thirties seemed to know everything.; Marriage,Raising children, business, politics etc. Though they were not married, I found them very helpful when I had challenges in making decisions concerning my husband or any member of his extended family... Months rolled away and I found so much joy and comfort in knowing my supposed sisters Rosie and Tricia. They knew everything I did and even encouraged me to start a small trade.
Two months on, my hubby visited home and I was overjoyed. He was happy to know I had started a little trade even though he felt I was stressing myself. I couldn't wait to tell him about my new friends and he was eager to meet them too. I was however shocked to my bone marrows,when my husband disapproved of our friendship as soon as they left. He told me that there was something about them and warned me to stay away from them, I felt very bad about my husband's decision and began to keep them at arms length but they would not let me be. They told me that my hubby did not want me to socialise because he was scared. They told me he was doing the same thing and wanted me to die a lonely woman. They turned my husband's heart against me and before long , I started to dance to their tune. What if my husband was cheating anyway? He didn't come home often and would always complain that his female boss was over working him? What if he was sleeping with her? Paul is such a cute dude. Who wouldn't fall for him anyway? But my Paul was responsible. I knew that but Tricia and Rosie were putting ideas into my head... I began to attend parties with them not long after and even started to take a little alcohol- the one thing I detested so much, I couldn't help myself neither could I understand my husband either. He seemed not to to care so much again and his absence was drifting us apart. The only way,out of it was to be happy since my hubby was so engrossed in making money and more money...
Friday nights used to be a fellowship time for me at church but I soon, turned it into a party night. I started to go to club with my friends and I always looked forward to it. I was just too happy with my new life that I forgot one fact- Tricia and Rosie were not married...
One fateful night, Rosie introduced me to her married female friend who in turn introduced me to Alhaji Musa. Alhaji Musa was such a warm person and I was very pleased to meet him. He told me how he had lost his wife,and two kids in a ghastly motor accident and how he had lived a lonely life since their demise. We talked all through the night and exchanged phone numbers and house addresses...
What started off as a platonic relationship soon became a problem that I cannot solve till date.... After our first meeting, I couldn't wait to see Alhaji again and again. I was endeared to him, the way he talked, his soft response. The way he handled issues,. I found myself lusting after an older man... and I couldn't help it. Then one day it happened... Alhaji offered me raw diamond for raw sex! I was very mad at him. Why would he ask me for sex? He knew I was married. He told me that he respects that fact. He told me that it was fine if we remained friends. He told me that he would meet my husband someday..... I got home very confused andangry. I knew I liked Alhaji but I wasn't sure that I was,willing to cheat on my husband but the price was tempting... Raw diamond! I gave it a huge thought. My husband must have been cheating on me too.
I told Tricia and Rosie and they encouraged me to do it. I would be a fool if I missed that life time opportunity and so,I did! I slept with Alhaji in exchange for raw diamond! It was such a long night. I hated myself for doing it., I betrayed my husband. I broke our marriage covenant!.. I cried all through the night but I was soon to,discover that a greater damage has been done!
Today, I'm HIV positive. I discovered this a few months after I slept with Alhaji. Life has turned upside down for me and I wish I listened to my husband. I feel very terrible because I am on my anti retroviral drugs and my husband doesn't know a thing. These days, he has become very loving and caring and has promised to stop the job and come back home since had gathered enough and could establish here so as to be close to his family...
What do I do? How can I tell my husband that I cheated on him with an older man whom I contracted the deadly virus from? How can I tell him that I am on ARVs?
How can I tell him that I continued with the friends he asked me to desist from? This is surely the end of the road for me....
Dear Readers; What did you learn from this?
Lessons: Never see your free time as an opportunity to mingle especially with those that are not in the same line with you but see it as an opportunity to invest in your life by learning a new thing or being empowered.
2.Never assume that your spouse's advice to avoid some set of friends is a way of being jealous or depriving you of mixing up. They may know better and believe me, your spouse wouldn't want your destruction so whatever they advise is always the best for you especially when you yourself feel its genuineness within...don't be carried away easily...
3.Self control is the key...
