There are two beasts in Revelation:

The first beast(the anti-christ),who was given power by satan and who had authority over nations is an entity that could either signify a nation which would be known in modern day as a super-power or an organization that has great influence over people and governments.
Some argue that the "false church" that arose from the collapse of rome and the establishment of 10 sovereign european nations will be the end-time anti-christ: postulating the fact that 3 nations were prophesied by daniel to be wiped out by the emergence of the anti-christ(indeed,3 great nations were wiped out by the roman catholic crusade).However,many disagree,claiming that a nation will rise up toward the end of days to wage war against all of christiandom for 42 months,that there will be an attempt to unite humanity against God.

Heads= kingdoms or governments
Horns= dominion or power
Crowns= authority
-The beast will rise out of the multitude of nations at a time when the whole is in great turbulence and chaos
-The beast is a coaliton of 7 governments and 10 kings(leaders): 6 of the 7 governments have collapsed and 1 is yet to come.The beast itself is an 8th government.
-One of the beast's heads was wounded and then healed again; this means,one of the governments that had collapsed will eventually rise again and humanity will be greatly astonished by its rise.
-The beast was given power,authority and a throne by satan.
