Ghana is hoping to reach a deal with Nigeria this week over a $103m (£70m) unpaid bill for gas after Nigeria's gas company suspended its threat to cut supplies. Ghana has struggled to pay its Nigerian gas bill after the Volta River Authority (VRA) utility ran out of money because it stopped borrowing funds from banks as interest rates soared during the country's financial crisis. The VRA stopped paying for gas in August last year, but last week the government did pay $10m, opening the way for talks on how the remaining sum will be paid. Ghana's electricity industry is mired in a crisis, with tariffs too low to be profitable, reduced supplies from the country's dams and residents stealing power. The gas, which is piped from Nigeria through Benin and Togo, is used to generate a quarter of Ghana's electricity so any cut in supply will hamper power production. President John Mahama has
explained that the $103 million
debt owed the Nigeria Gas company
by Ghana has existed since
2012.According to him, Ghana
began piling up the debt after a
ship broke part of the pipelines that
carry gas from Nigeria to Ghana
through the West Africa Pipeline
Company (WAPCo).
Ghana, last week, had to race
against
time to settle parts of the debt
owed the Nigerian company after
the West African neighbour
threatened to cut supply of gas to
WAPCo. Sources in Nigeria say
Ghanaian authorities have so far
paid $10
million out of the total debt but
have been given a stringent timeline
to offset the debt by the Nigerian
government.
Commenting on the development,
Mahama said Ghanaians must
understand the circumstances that
created the financial impasse.“The
debt dates back to 2012. We
started incurring the debt when a
ship broke one of the pipelines that
supplied the gas from Nigeria so
the VRA had to purchase crude to
power the machines for almost a
year, and that affected their balance
sheet a
lot. “So when the pipe was fixed
and the
gas started flowing, it had already
frustrated the accounts of the VRA
but currently, there is a plan in
place to pay the debt and already,
July and August have been sorted
out,” the President told Kumasi-
based Garden City Radio.

Consequently they have been charging Ghanaians very low energy billing. 4. Ghana has been using Nigeria's quasi- free gas to run a welfare system in Ghana. That's deception and emotional fraud. 5 Nigeria has restored hope back as plans to cut Ghana off from this source of energy have been shelved. And has the capacity to produce more than what Nigeria sends through the gas pipeline.. Even enough to sell its own gas through the pipeline in a reverse process. So dependency on Nigeria's gas is going to be reduced drastically as from this year end. Other dam projects are coming up with plans for new gas processing plans are far advanced. The government is also working on other sources like the Nzema solar project under construction which is the biggest solar project in Africa. An innovative wave power project and power barges. Ghana is posed to have over 5900mw by 2018. Having enough capacity to provide for its people and for neighbours that will want to tap into a more reliable source. AN FRANCISCO, October 19, (THEWILL) – The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and incoming Minister, Dr. Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu and the President of Ghana, Mr. John Mahama Monday met in Kumasi, Ghana to resolve the outstanding debts owed Nigeria by the Volta River Authority (VRA) for gas supplied. The agreement allows the VRA more time (last day of February 2016) to settle a backlog of debts believed to be around $171m, but it must pay in full the invoices for the months of August and September latest by October 31 or risk being cut off from supplies, sources with knowledge of the agreement told THEWILL. THEWILL also understands that the Ministry of Finance has been directed to write requesting West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCO) to extend the November 5 date for the Ghanaian government's guaranty called WAPCO. The debt covers gas supplied to VRA, which is 100% owned by the government of Ghana, and the cost of supply and transportation of the gas from Nigeria. That's deception and emotional fraud. 5 Nigeria has restored hope back as plans to cut Ghana off from this source of energy have been shelved. 1 VRA ,Ghana's power generator does not borrow from the world bank to buy gas from Nigeria 2 VRA"s non payment has nothing to do with getting a loan from the world bank.In 2013 or 14 thereabout , the West Africa gas pipeline got destroyed and for a year VRA had to import oil which was more expensive to power the thermal plants.The importation of oil affected their balance sheet which resulted in them delaying debts owed to N-Gas 4 The gas is paid for and is not free. 5 It was the reasonable thing to do . We will pay our outstanding debt.N-Gas will not have flare the gas.Its a win win |
