Barely one month after the wife of the Minister of Education and former governor of Ebonyi State, Dr. Sam Egwu, escaped death by a whisker when her vehicle ran into a stationary lorry, his multi million naira country home at Ezzamgbo, Ohaukwu LGA, Ebonyi State was razed by fire on Thursday.

Eyewitnesses said that the fire, which started at about 1:30a.m. and lasted for over two hours, razed the building with properties worth billions of naira destroyed.

Speaking to our correspondent, an eyewitness who did not want his name disclosed said all efforts by the youths of the village and security operatives guarding the house to quench the fire proved abortive.

According to the eyewitness, the fire might have been caused by an electrical fault in the building and before the alarm could be raised in the community, massive damage had been done.

He noted that when the fire started almost all the youths in the community, and security operatives attached to the former governor made efforts to bring the fire under control but since the building was under lock and key all their efforts came to nothing.

“Efforts made to break into the house and possibly evacuate some of the properties were futile because of our inability to force the iron door open. So, we watched helplessly as the properties were destroyed by fire,” the source lamented.

He said that several calls were made to the Ebonyi State Fire Service when the fire was noticed but fire fighters did not arrive the scene until several hours later, even though Egwu’s country home is about 15 minutes drive from Abakaliki, the state capital.

If when when you were a Governor you had put in place an effective fire fighting organisation on ground your expensive house would not have razed to the ground.  If have stolen a kobo while you were governor - I can guarantee you that your misfortunes has just started and you haven't seen anything yet.

Oh well good for him. He didn't do his job as a governor so now he is reaping what he sowed.
I'm sure this has been happened to people in his state and he did nothing to improve the situation.

Ntoooo. tongue

Penny wise, pound foolish for the ex-governor.
He had all the money to build and equip the fire service but chose to use the money meant for them to build mansions all over the place. Unfortunately, one of the ugly mansions got burnt down due to the failed state of the Ebonyi fire service.

Fortunately for him, this incident will enable him to put up a more beautiful and sophisticated bunker with a little chunk of the money he looted.

If the ex governor's house can burn up due to lack of a fire service, imagine what ordinary Nigerians have to deal with. He is the fool that built his mansion on a foundation of sand. I hope it was arson as long as there was no loss of life. Keep burning them all up.

Where are those who mouth off about how Nigeria is more advanced than South Africa?

@blacksta. Egwu is the minister of education so insurance covers him. As a minister, he controls a huge budget because he has lots of agencies and parastatals under his ministry.

Items of sentimental values are the only things Egwu will lose from the victory of his mansion razed in flames. Don't forget that he's minister of education now, so all he has to do is loot from the educational funds in order to re-coporate from his lost. I would not be too surprised if Egwu was the one who burned down his billion naira mansion to have an excuse to loot even more. I hope this is a way of god whipping his ass for the billions he took from the people. YOU HAVE YET TO WITNESS YOUR LIFE GO THROUGH HELL EGWU! One way or the other, all of these looters will pay for the horrible things they did to their people! I'm not talking about god either. People are starving because of leaders like Egwu who stole from them and used the country's money to fullfill their own financial needs. Egwu is one of the looters who had absolutely nothing before looting his billions. THEY ALL WILL PAY FOR THE TRAGEDIES THEY CAUSED THEIR PEOPLE TO GO THROUGH!!!

Sam Egwu really a lot for education while he was governor and I'm confident he will leave a good legacy as education minister as well. It's sad to hear his house got burnt.

So many bad belle people. You guys should grow up! The Punch showed unprofessionalism in its report as though there was fire, it affected a little bungalow where Egwu normally received visitors. The whole of Egwu's so-called mansion is hardly worth more than a few millions. Let's be objective in these things. Egwu was far away in Abuja when the incident occured.
