amInigerian: I don't blame you, you act out of ignorance. the real opobo indigenes knows better, no need to start responding to your mis-interpretation but visit Opobo and thank me later. I visit Opobo regularly and as an Ikwerre man language isn't a barrier between us and i stand to tell you they are more ibo's than our Ijaw brother's. But please why do so-called Nigeria(created by Lord Luggard)enjoy twisting history, like i said earlier ask Opobo man and Bonny man they will tell you better. 5 Likes |

Please provide credible sources when you put stuff here. I put credible sources here. It is a fact that Opobos broke away from Bonny led by Jaja, who was given land by the neighbouring Andoni leader, with which to establish his kingdom of Opobo Jaja was himself an Igbo slave bought into Bonny and who was given his freedom according to the Bonny customs which included ceremonies which involved public head shaving. Bonny grace made him a free man and he (and all the other Igbos the Bonny kingdom declared free) became Bonny people. Naturally, because of the embrace of their new found identity, culture and value system, Jaja and his followers preferred the new identity conferred on them by the Ijaws as Ijaws. In line with the practices in Bonny, Okrika etc, they (Jaja and his followers) established a monarchy (not an indiche or any other igbo hierarchical system). They speak the native language of Ibani and Ibo in Opobo too. The point I am trying to make is that Opobos cannot deny their connection to the Igbo ethnic group (they are not even trying to) because when you are influenced by this part of the country, you have an appreciation for history characteristic of the Ibanis (Bonny people), Okrika, Kalabari, Nembe and Ijaw people in general who keep written historic records. They learnt to read and write in English very very early. That being said, they (Opobos) don't appreciate other people trying to declare for them who they are. They know it is their own prerogative. You did not get sold to Bonny chiefs and kings and stand the chance to go into the ships to the point of no return with them. You did not get sold to slave dealers and get displayed like a commodity by fellow igbos in the Arochukwu slave markets before being carried to the Ijaw regions of the south to be sold to the Ijaws. You did not after being granted your freedom by the Bonny kindgom, grow your way into relevance by serving a chief and then going out on your own. You did not get denied the chance of being a chief of a major house of Bonny because you were reminded of your slave origins. You did not therefore have to fight a war with the Bonny people to establish your rights to traditional leadership in Bonny. You did not suffer the bitterness of defeat in war as Jaja did, before he was given the expanse of land he was given by the Andoni leader, with which to form his own kingdom and dynasty. These Opobos, many but not all of whom can trace their origins all the way back to being sold as items in a slave market, do not appreciate other south easterners who do not know what it is to go through what they went through as a people to feel that they are in any position to mindlessly declare an identity over them. They would not consider this fraud, but just a crudish engagement of history and an unrefined approach to inter-ethnic relationships. They would not consider this fraud , however, the Igbo man who is perpetually fraudulent by nature attempted to claim that the kingdom that gave them (Opobos) their freedom by exempting them from the white man's ships, taught them new ways, allowed them to accumulate wealth if they wished through engaging in the same trade the indegenes were engaging in, taught them societal structure and organisational power, taught them to read and write, (these people with whom they lived and died) the Igbo man has attempted to say that that these pple, this kingdom of Bonny was actually Igbo. When they look at you as stupid people how will you blame them? If they don't want to be assocaited with you because of your behaviour, who will blame them? In what culture is this behaviour by the Igbos not a disgrace? ijawcitizen 99xtr6r CSTR6 Dhugal momonny aminigerian stebell Curlieweed Abagworo peleson bigfrancis21 menabadoo 3 Likes |

I am so surprised why the Igbos are so desperate to claim Ijaw land by manipulating Ijaw history. There is no historian in the world that has made a research about the history of the Nigerian people, who is not aware that Bonny and Opobo are Ijaw communities. There was never any time in ancient history in which Bonny and Opobo had been documented as Igbo societies. the only people that are now trying to do that are the Igbos and the enemies of the Ijaw people in Nigeria, because they are interested in Ijaw land because of the resources in it. As a result of this, they want to manipulate Ijaw history in order to claim Ijaw land. I want to make it clear to the Igbos that what brought Igbos to Bonny was the activities of the slave trade. Some of the Igbo slaves that were sold to the Ijaws at Kalabari,Okrika,Bonny, etc.,were initiated through ritual initiation to become Ijaws while others were sold to the Europeans. When a person undergoes ritual initiation(an Ijaw cultural practice),the person becomes an Ijaw. He or she will cease to be a part of his or her former tribe. But,it is an abomination for an Ijaw person to be made to undergo ritual initiation by an Ijaw community. Therefore,Ijaws do not carry out ritual initiation on their fellow Ijaw people. Ijaws only initiate a foreigner. Jaja of Opobo was only an Igbo man before his initiation at Bonny. Immediately after the initiation,Jaja became an ijaw man(according to the Ijaw ritual initiation tradition,he was no longer an Igbo man). Ritual initiation was also a practice of the ancient Egyptians and the Jewish people. It is still being practised by the Jewish people till today. Despite the fact that the Jewish people have initiated different non jewish people all over the world to become jews,it has not led to the manipulation of the origin of the Jewish people. The origin of the Jewish people as written in the bible is still being maintained. I want to make it clear here that the statements being made by the Igbos that Opobo is a property of King Jaja and his descendants are not true. Jaja was not the ancestor of the Opobo people. The true ancestor of the Opobo people was king opubo(opobo),who was an Amanyanabo that ruled Bonny in the past. It was the family of king Opubo(opobo) of Bonny that Jaja was sold into as a slave. After his initiation,he became an Ijaw man with an Ibani-Ijaw name. Therefore, king Jaja was a member of king Opubo(Opobo) family of Bonny. King Opubo(opobo) family of Bonny was an Ijaw family and it is still an Ijaw family in the present day Opobo. It should be noted that it was King Opubo(Opobo) family of Bonny that migrated to found Opobo. What was the percentage of Jaja and his family during the migration? They did not even account for one percent(1%) of the king Opubo(opobo) family during the migration. Now,where did some people get their information from that Opobo is a property and estate of king Jaja. This is laughable. It should be noted that fourteen of the eighteen leading houses of Bonny joined Jaja during the migration from Bonny. Finally,Opobo is a property of King Opubo(opobo) of Bonny. This was the reason why the kingdom of Opobo was named after King opubo(OPOBO) of Bonny. King Opubo(OPOBO) Fubara pepple of Bonny was an Ijaw king who ruled Bonny from 1792 to 1828. PLEASE OPOBO AND BONNY ARE IJAW KINGDOMS FOUNDED BY IJAWS. THE IGBOS IN THIS FORUM SHOULD BEHAVE WELL DURING SENSITIVE ISSUES. THE COMMENTS BEING MADE BY THE IGBO PEOPLE IN THIS FORUM ARE QUITE UNFORTUNATE. IT WILL ONLY MAKE THE IJAWS TO SEE THEM AS A THREAT TO THE IJAW NATION. 4 Likes |

momonny: There were 4 chiefs that went with him . These were, Ubani, Obomanu, Uranta and Ogolo. Some historians add Minimah but minimah was not a chief then. Maduka remained in Bonny. |
