Re: Truck Heads Into Nigeria - Is duty payable on Trucks Importation by FADAKA: 10:32pm On May 07, 2009
@Blacksta, 1. There is no age limits on truck-head.
2. With new e-payment, u are looking @200k to 250k (Naira)
3. COST of shipping from UK/Germany? i don't know. lol
But shipping from Us for single axes should be around $4600.

Remember to buy certain trucks to Nigeria, e.g MACK, IVECO, MERCEDES and make them Old models.
" The older the easier to maintain "
Goodluck on your new haulage biz.

@FADAKA: Does it mean that newer old model Mack trucks (1998 up) will not attract good markrt in Nigeria?. The 1983 MACK trucks look quite old and unattactive to me.

Re: Truck Heads Into Nigeria - Is duty payable on Trucks Importation by hardmoore: 3:49am On Feb 25, 2010
@Fhemmy, what I am saying is that a 1997 MACK truck will definitely attrart better market and price. That they love old models is not in doubt. This is mainly due to affordability. My two-cents.

To all the auto gurus in the house: What is the difference between air ride and spring ride suspension?. Is there a preference for one over the other by the Nigerian consumer?. Thanks

The difference between air ride and spring ride suspension

Air Ride = CH Model (CH613)  - 1990 and beyond
Spring Suspension (also called Camelback Suspension) = R Model Mack trucks – 1989 and before.

Air Ride = Difficult to maintain in Naija due to poor roads and cost of the Air tank, parts, etc.
Spring Suspension (also called Camelback Suspension) = Easy to maintain, many part accessible in Naija and less expensive.

Dude (hardmoore), from a truck person, you don’t want to test the market with a CH first (I wish you had asked first before you bought that truck), because first of all, there is little to none of a market left for beginners (and I am just being honest), and secondly, R Model (the 1986 year that you claimed in the previous posting will not market better than the CH) will sell any day of the week faster than the CH, plus, it is cheaper to buy at the place of origin and also cheaper to ship.  Nigeria IS NOT America, where looks are everything, especially not for trucks, it’s about what is durable and (MOST IMPORTANTLY) what is CHEAP.  Nigerian businessmen are VERY economical and are not ready to fork out the extra Million Naira plus that separates the R Model from the CH (in price).  A CH 613 will sit twice as long as an R Model Mack, take it from the Niger Delta Mack truck king. This advice is free. . .   wink

No problems my brother, that's what the NL community is for. . .  If you let me know your current situation (where you are at) I can give you the best steps to take next.  All hope isn't lost, but if you still wanna ship the CH please MARKET, MARKET, MARKET!!!  I cannot stress this enough.  The ideal scenario for a starter would have been an R Model (1980s) or a tipper (Dump truck) in Lagos or PH.  With a CH you have to be very patient, I could send you a link to two or three NL-ers that have posted a CH truck on NL since Nov and still hasn't sold (regardless of how low the price was dropped). If you didn't buy the CH for a "steal" price then you might wanna either:

(i). Chalk this up as a learning experience, you can still ship it and try and sell it, but if anyone offers you a price that will give you somewhat of a profit, go for it. . .
(ii). Before you ship the truck, (if you have the money) buy a tipping trailer and send them both together and PUT THAT TRUCK TO WORK!!!  If you did, I could give you some advice. . .  Believe me, if I could do it over again (not entirely, but ending of last year) I would have made the move to put the trucks to work rather than selling.  I don't know what your entourage situation is like in Nigeria but to put the trucks to work you have to have a small entourage (not many at all, just a few) for oversight and a darn good reliable mechanic, these are the only drawbacks.

Anyway, I have exhausted my NL time today so I shall add more tomorrow. . .
