The Fast and the Furious(also known as Fast & Furious) is an American franchise including a series of action films, which center around illegal street racing and heists, and various other media portraying the charactersand situations from the films. Distributed by Universal Pictures, the series was established with the 2001 film titled The Fast and the Furious; followed by seven sequels, two short films that tie into the series, and as of May 2015, it has become Universal's biggest franchise of all time. 1. Paul Walker Personally Picked the Cars for "2 Fast 2 Furious"


The first car you see Paul Walker drive in 2 Fast 2 Furious, is actually his own racing car in real life. An adamant supporter and fan of street racing and car culture, he also personally handpicked the cars for the movie.

2. The Drifting in Tokyo Drift Was Practical, Not Computer Animated.

The drifting in the movie was not CGI, it was performed by professional drivers. As reported in Sport Compact Car, Rhys Millen, his father Rod, and a handful of other famous rally and drift racers consistently performed amazing drift sequences for the movie. In fact The Mitsubishi Lancer EVO VIII, and two of the VW R32s, were converted from all-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive so they could drift properly. Toyota also donated 4,000 tires for the movie and roughly 2,000 were used. Rays Engineering donated its 170 Volk Racing wheels as well.

Most of the Stunts in Fast & Furious 6 Were Practical.

The tank chase was originally planned to be done with CGI, but director Justin Lin insisted that it be done practically, with some post-production enhancements. Dennis McCarthy, the man behind building the vehicles used in the franchise, said they used "a whole fleet of BMW M5s" in order to complete one just sequence. McCarthy also said "We pretty much destroyed every single one later on in other scenes." 100+ cars were wrecked throughout filming.

4. Fast & Furious Still Holds the Highest Grossing April Release Record.


With an opening weekend gross of $72.5 million, the movie had the biggest April debut ever. (Anger Management formerly held the record with $42.2 million) Universal was initially worried about the film after Tokyo Drift led the series off path. Now, the franchise is one of Universal's biggest earners. With a gross of $72.5 million, it was also the biggest three day opening ever for a Universal Pictures film, beatingThe Lost World: Jurassic Park's $72.1 million.

5. Car Companies Made All Sorts of Deals with Universal Throughout the Franchise.


Beyond Mitsubishi VIIs being modified for the first film to look like the upcoming VIIIs (to promote the new models) and the Lancer EVO VII in2 Fast 2 Furious being just a standard US model modified to look like the upcoming Japanese model, Universal made all sorts of cross promotion and product placement deals. A few examples:The Yellow Dodge Viper driven by one of the goons in2 Fast 2 Furious was the first of the new shape "production" Dodge Vipers. Universal got a hold of the first four of these cars to use for filming on the understanding that none of them would be damaged. This is why you don't see them crash in the actual film. For Tokyo Drift Volkswagen donated four prototype R32s and four Touran minivans to fulfill its pledge with Universal to plug each other's products.

6. Paul Walker Wasn't Asked to Return for Tokyo Drift Because Universal Thought He Was Too Old.

The first draft of the script did, however, feature the return of Vin Diesel's character, Domonic Torreto. Nearly 10 years later Paul Walker would still be leading the franchise until his tragic death (off set) during the production of the seventh film.

7. The Runway at the End of Fast & Furious 6 Was Exceptionally Long.


Most runways are just over a mile in length, but the one in the film was abnormally long.The climactic scene in Fast & Furious 6 involves the crew chasing after an airplane that is trying to take off. The scene lasts over 13 minutes and the plane is always going at least 115 mph, given what The Rock has said in interviews. Vulture talked to Captain Robert Travis, President of the Independent Pilots Association and did some independent math, while breaking down the scene in parts to conclude that the runway was 28.829 miles long.The BBC, however, talked to pilot Ian Hollingworth and using his speed estimate concluded that the runway was 18.37 miles long.

8. Fast & Furious 7 is reported to be the most expensive film in the franchises history to date. So far reports have shown that the film has cost well over $140 million.

9. Paul Walker unexpectedly died in a tragic car accident during thefilming of the last scenes of Fast 7. Writers and directors were worried which direction to take with the film franchise. They decided to hire 4 actors who had similar bodies to Walker and eventually used his twin brother, Cody Walker, to stand in for his brother to finish filming. They suggested that there will be many more films to come in the future for this epic franchise.

His body was discovered in the passenger seat in a 'pugilistic stance,' which means he was in a defensive position preparing for a crash.There were multiple fractures throughout his body, including his jaw, collarbone, and left upper arm according to the report. There were also various ribs and pelvic fractures.
