new2020:
Understand the difference between "merged" and " bought out". UBA bought out Standard Trust and Continental when they merged. Diamond bought out Lion Bank, e.t.c . Meaning, the buyer not merger has sole right to retain its board of directors, brand and culture as in the case of Diamond and UBA. So what the previous guy was saying is spot on..no Biafran run banks has liquidated or forced to merge due to insolvency. Mostly its yoruba run banks that get run down or merging to save face. The best banks in Nigeria today remains Diamond, Zenth and Fidelity...all Biafran run. Now understand?

Guy, please go back and read all about the history of banking in Nigeria before you come back here to yarn stories. Since you know so much about them, please tell us what led to the mergers and acquisition of the old Igbo-owned banks in chapter and verse. sad

I don't have the time to start digging up facts today, but mergers and acquisitions is a very wide area and most of the Igbo-owned banks (just like those owned by folks from other ethnic groups in the financial sector), that were either bought or taken over or ended up being merged with other banks, were either highly insolvent, distressed, close to bankruptcy or had difficulties in meeting the minimum capital base specified by CBN as a result of mismanagement. undecided

The African Continental Bank popularly known as ACB was one of the big three indigenous banks in Nigeria during the 1950s to early 1980s. It survived the banking crisis of the 1950s and emerged out of a political crisis in the same decade to become by 1978, a major indigenous bank with up to 50 branches and 150 million naira in deposits. After the creation of new states in 1976, the bank became owned by the states of Eastern Nigeria. The bank became distressed in 1991 and was taken over by the Central Bank of Nigeria in 1994 for restructuring and resale. In 2000, a consortium comprised of Diamond Bank, Hallmark Bank and Citizens Bank decided to revive the distressed bank. The new bank commenced operations in 2002 and was chaired by Green Nwankwo. In 2005, it merged with other banks to become Spring Bank. http://nigerianwiki.com/wiki/African_Continental_Bank

What eventually happened to the same Spring bank that bought over ACB? It also got taken over by Enterprise bank due to insolvency, and that same Enterprise bank was finally bought over by Heritage Bank, after it had been acquired by AMCON.

Spring Bank which was formed in December 2005 by the merger of six (6) Nigerian financial institutions, namely: ACB International Bank Plc, Citizens International Bank Plc, Fountain Trust Bank Plc, Guardian Express Bank Plc, Omega Bank Plc, Trans International Bank Plc.
In 2009, following an industry-wide audit of all commercial banks in the country, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the banking regulator in the country, found nine commercial banks under-capitalized and badly managed. Spring Bank was one of the troubled banks. The CBN intervened by injecting new capital to maintain solvency and appointing new management. On 5 August 2011 the CBN revoked the banking license of Spring Bank.

Enterprise Bank was formed in August 2011 by taking over the assets and some of the liabilities of the now defunct Spring Bank, whose commercial banking license was revoked. EBL was issued a commercial banking license on 5 August 2011. As of January 2012, the assets of Enterprise Bank Limited are 100% owned by Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON), an arm of the Federal Government of Nigeria. In July 2012, the Federal High Court of Nigeria, in Lagos ordered that the affairs of the defunct Spring Bank Plc be wound up, since its license had been revoked. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring_Bank

Go through the archives and check the facts. You can beat your chest today that Diamond Bank, Fidelity and Zenith are among the largest banks, but how did they get so big?? What about the other Igbo-owned banks that crashed?? GTB Plc, FCMB, Access bank, Skye bank etc are also among the top 10 banks in Nigeria today, which are owned by non-Igbo. In some cases, they merged or acquired other banks to grow to their current size. Get your facts right, please! sad
