I think it's a problem that started with our elementary social studies curriculum. I was taught as a KID that there are 3 major tribes in Nigeria. At that age , a bad foundation was laid in our minds that some tribes are major while the others are minor. This could be a deliberate attempt to build this into our mindsets, and for me it set the foundation for referring to some people as minorities. For me, There are NO minorities since everybody is equal. @Topic There are no minorities |

@ deor03 "major" in this context is based on number. |

^^ You may be missing the point. In term of actual total population size, then there are smaller groups who are refereed to as Minorities. It do not in anyway mean we aint equal. Black, asian etc are considered ethnic minorities in the Uk and US. |

in western countries, women are also considered minorities. Being a minority doesnt always have to be a bad thing if and only if, it creates opportunities for advancement. http://academic.udayton.edu/race/01race/minor01.htm Minorities can be gender, religion or ethnicity based. And they dont always demonstrate every single characteristic listed here. But they may fit at least half. |

Yeah, but we all know how it screws up our judgment in this country. The so-called minorities are always relegated to the background in all national matters. |

@Richy, Some people find it difficult to understand when they say "minorities and women". Because they sometimes lump minorities and women together for affirmative action doesn't mean women are minorities. tpiah got it all wrong. |
