On the dichotomy between HND and B.Sc. Truth need be said. The two are not the same. Even, where an HND graduate is better than a B.sc, We assume the other way round.
People are paid based on their certification and position (Even in developed democracies)! A doctor will always earn more than a pharmacist. More so, if you dont want the discrimination to continue, why not take a degree!
On a final note, it is unargueable that most HND graduates have one or two negatives- either they cant speak good English, dress properly or relate in socially acceptable standards.
All of these and more account for the dichotomy and irreconciliable differences between B.Sc and HND graduates!

I wonder if their are recruitment firms and agencies in Nigeria.
There are actually but most of the recruitment firms are more interested in in large percentage of your salary. An average Nigeria contract staff will explain better.

ifeness:

Some graduate should make deal with the government like road maintenance ,sewage management etc are possible job opportunities I reckon. Everyone don't need to wear a tie and shirt.
Sewage management? grin Ah ah ah, not these present set of graduates I see around. They feel because they are graduates, tie and shirt must be compulsory!!

What is it that a Bsc holder can do and HND cant? It should be about competent/performance not certificate. Give everybody a level playing field and let see results. Not certificate celebrant.

Then going with your analysis, let the govt scrap HND then, to avoid disparity and descrimination.

fratermathy:
This is getting too old and stale.

While I do not support totally embarrassing HND graduates and denying them of promotions, appointments and a chance to make a successful career, it should be noted that HND and B.Sc/B.A/B.Agric/B.Tech/LL.B/B.Fisheries are different and the dichotomy must be emphasised.
HND is a technical diploma. It is technically not even a Degree but a National Diploma. B.Sc and its other appellations are the recognised standard for academic, theoretical and career based jobs and appointments. That is not to say HND cannot be used. It is just that HND is better off for handy middle-levelled and technical jobs/careers. The whole essence of HND is to make sure that there are middle-levelled skilled people in the society that can be called upon and relied on for their technical expertise. University graduates are seen as having done a theoretical study with much intellectual rigour and are, thus, deemed to have a high intellectual acuity for certain professions and careers. This must be known and not relegated. No matter how much sentiments come in and no matter how much we try to equate these certifications, the sacrosanct fact is that they are not the same. As long as one is a "Diploma" and another is a "Degree", they can NEVER be treated equal and same.

On the issue of Shell equating HND with Third Class, I have iterated in the previous paragraph that HND is not seen as an intellectually inclined degree but rather as a technically inclined diploma. Having a Distinction in HND only proves that you have an excellent technical expertise, perhaps even beyond that of University Degree holders. However, this does not translate into the fact that you are intellectually buoyant enough to stand a University First Class product. It doesn't add up. For one, our Nigerian Polytechnics operate a 4 points GPA system as opposed to the 5 Points used in our Nigerian varsities. Secondly, the units of courses taken in HND programmes are far lower, both individually and cumulatively, when compared with a University. Thirdly, the course contents in Polytechnics are peripheral and elementary as opposed to that of a University! Fourthly, the calibre of academic staff and their standing is much lower than that of a University. For one, a Polytechnic cannot have a Professorial Cadre! Polytechnics usually have substandard facilities and make-shift labs and instruments. All these come together to haunt the graduates of Nigerian Polytechnics!

The solution to all these bifurcations is easy. Polytechnics should be made to award a B.Tech rather than an "Ordinary" or "Higher" diploma. Polytechnic facilities should be overhauled and made to standards. The Professorial Cadre, alongside its competitive and cumbersome "floating" process, should be introduced to the Polytechnics. Polytechnics should employ the 5 or more Points GPA system and courses should be well developed, standard and carry higher units! In fact, the term Polytechnic should be hijacked from parlance and replaced with University of Technology or any other soothing appellation. We should always strive to follow the UK pattern in our technological pedagogical system.

Finally, on the issue of ostracization and stigmatization, I believe it is only Nigerian Legislative Bodies that can end this once and for all. As long as they are comfortable with it, nothing will change! Let's just stop flogging this issue and look forward to better things! This issue has been discussed, ignited and quenched severally since Nigerian employers' decisions to employ preferential treatments! It is time we either take drastic measures or simply let it go as we have always done.

I can feel your Pain. Funny How No BSc Holder compare himself with you.
Not bragging Though NOBODY have Diploma of any type in my Family and its a big Family.

Going to University is not a Privilege it's your Choice and Right.

May God provide for us all as we Learn to be humble. smiley

oismail:

You called it Diploma!
Have u seen their syllabus?
Have you compare it with that of Bsc?
Any difference?

Don't because of you were privileged to be a university (graduate or under) feel it's superior. I Have attended written interviews along side Bsc grads and I have them as friends i see no difference.

Have sympathy for yourself and those HND graduates in your family and neighborhoods. No person in right frame of mind will compare HND graduate to 200L uni student.
Go for mental test, you need it then thank me later

Btech could have make sense had it been those stupid house of Senate pass it into bill, but they won't. It's only wardrope allowance them sabi

I agree with you and freemarthy. Truth be told, the 'diploma' present in the polytechnic certificate is what is the hindering factor. A diploma degree is not the same with a full 1st degree Making the degress B.Tech and changing their names to Uni of Tech, then making the certifcation a full 4 year programme instead of 2-2 years can solve the problems but the nigerian legislators won't deliberate on serious things like this

Right now, I find it very hard to call myself a Nigerian. What is the point of pledging loyalty to a country that cares not for the HND graduates?

As an HND holder, I graduated with distinction (Top of my class)from the top polytechnic in Nigeria. With high hopes, I applied for the ongoing shell graduate recruitment. The recruitment process involves an online registration and series of online aptitude tests prior to oral interview. What broke my heart during the registration was when I saw the column fo where to indicate your class of degree. First option was first class. Second was second class upper. Third was second class lower and the fourth was third class/HND.
This means that irrespective of your grade in the polytechnic, shell sees you as a third class graduate.
Well, I have moved on. Better things ahead. My advice to HND holders is to embrace entrepreneurship. That way, we can gain respect in the society. And for the country called Nigeria that have refused to stop this BSc/HND dichtonomy, what out for HND holders who will shape the economy soon!!!
THIS IS REALLY DISHEARTENING! I GOT TO DAT POINT DURING APPLICATION PROCESS AND I WAS LIKE WTF..........BUT COME TO THINK OF IT,TO GET UPPER CREDIT FOR HND ELECT/ELECT AUCHI POLY NA BEANS? DIS COUNTRY DON TIRE ME I SWEAR

this is my take on it.
It is so disheartening that we the so called graduate could descend so low to abuse individual personality base on an issue created by some selfish crooks in governance, we no longer show intellectual prowess but proficiency in stupidity and foolishness.
HND/BSc was never created the same time, initially, the nation started with ND which was for middle level manpower, then BSc was not even in existence in Nigeria, our institutions then were colleges, e.g. UI, their graduates proceed to affiliate schools of such institution abroad for their BSc, with time, we had our own University and started issuing BSc also. With this, Diploma was 2yrs with 1yr compulsory training, while BSc was just 4 to 6yrs depending on the discipline, our curriculum was a template similar to that of Britain, they later introduced HSC, then scrapped and we have HND, all in the name if having a better curriculum to produce a better graduate.
Today, Britain and the world at large have made it a thing of the past to effect a positive change, but here in Nigeria, we seems to love the status quo when it's obvious that it's the most foolish of decision to make.
Irrespective of how fast your academic calendar is, you will not but use 5yrs to acquire a HND cert, while that of BSc can be attained in just 4yrs. I hear people claiming that the admission requirements differ, but to be sincere it's just in respect to UTME, SSCE is the same, it should also be noted that most of the students in Polytechnics are not there by desire but little to no choice which is glaring to all including the authorities.
I sincerely believe there are some gray areas the polytechnic is lacking behind, however, the removal of the dichotomy includes adjusting every part of the curriculum (admission requirements inclusive) to make it on par, you don't expect someone that used 5yrs in a course offers elsewhere for 4yrs but could not have access to it to be ready to give all when such (4yrs) will still be the superior in any industry.
RECOMMENDATION
The federal gov't should upgrade Poly's and Col of Edu that can be upgraded. The curriculum of both should be properly synchronize to give comprehensive academic knowledge. Gov't should create specialization, University (BSc), Polytechnic (B.tech) College of Education (B.Edu), B.Arts, Lb., Med, and other discipline can be merge with that offered by University or probably establish specialized schools for such. Avoid preferential treatment/discrimination for medicine related discipline and law at NYSC level Remove promotion ceiling for Polytechnic and Col of Edu.
I believe all this should increase prospective candidates’ moral for choosing institution to attend.
I refuse to think within the box, I see a Nation others will walk up to, to adopt the education model. We don't need to follow other nation, we can lead while others follow.

Thank God you said you have moved on, that's the best you can do. Its pathetic how the job market is now, which is due to the unemployment crisis. There are few jobs around and the companies offering them set standards which they deem fit. The truth is you cannot fault shell for deciding to employ whomever they wish to, its our government in years past that has continued to failed us.

That is true...but I saw that thing too from shell...they should simply have said they are looking for first class or second class upper or how they want it.the OP said he had been on it since morning and when he filled is result , they sent a regret mail...y waste people's time, effort and resource when they know it won't be necessay to them(shell)...so sad.
