Nigeria’s Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun,
has disclosed that raising the country’s non-oil
revenue is her top priority.
Forget about oil — we don’t control the price
of oil. That’s not where our problems lie,” Ms
Adeosun said according to Financial Times.
“Because of oil, we’ve ignored everything
else,” she said.
With a mindset of “we have oil” Abuja had practically
given up collecting the right amounts from other state
bodies, she explained, rattling off a list of federal
agencies she says had habitually under-reported their
revenues.
She added that she had already begun “drilling down
into the details” with ministry staff to assess how
much “parastatals” — state-run or affiliated agencies —
remit to the government.
She also praised the lack of pomp and circumstance at
the ministerial swearing in ceremony, a sharp contrast
to state ceremonies of past governments. “The
programme was a piece of paper, that’s it,” she said.
This isn’t the first time there’ll be calls for the
diversification of the country’s economy, ex Finance
Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala also mentioned it.

yes that is not our problem, our problem is wastages and corruption!! What were we able to achieve when the oil price favoured us? What did we do with the money? Diversification will only bring balance, growth and surplur to our economy thus, eliminates over dependent on oil.
Well her statement alone gives me a little relief. It is good that she understands that the upward and downward movements of oil price in the market controls the performance of our economy and there is an urgent need to find a new source of survival.
But diversification of our resources is a long term economic plan which could take many years before we could start reaping its benefits. For now, I fink we should just stick up to what we have and at the same time, planning for diversification.

I like the sound of this. All Buhari's Ministers are saying similar and this makes me confident they are all well-drilled about what should form the top priorities of this government.

Is this how a minister of finance of any country in the world talks?

Forget about oil, bla bla bla...

What then happens to the minister of oil, who happens to be Buhari himself? Forget about him too?

Oh, we should forget about all the revenue from oil then?

What percentage of 'diversification' does she want to achieve in a month, a year, medium term, long term?

Every administration in Nigeria would want to diversify the revenue base. The last administration was doing something with McKinsey and Company on expansion of non-oil tax base, how is she going to utilize that? What is she going to do differently?

What about jobs? What about stimulating investments? You can't just be taxing companies that are not producing or that are barely producing. And you can't fine your way out of fiscal quagmire.

What about spending, recurrent and capital expenditure, what is her plan in that regard?

What about the most pressing duty/function right now - 2016 budget? What is she doing about it, when is it going to NASS? Or are they doing it behind her back? Does she know that November is winding down already?

There are too many things people are expecting from a finance minister than swearing-in ceremonial stories. What is the value of that sheet of paper she wanted us to hear to the economy?

Sure she said that. Did she also say how and when? Nigeria's economy doesn't need much talk now. It requires action and nothing more. Don't tell us that we (you) will diversify, start the diversification. GEJ didn't say much about Agric but that sector really was revamped that if sustained, less attention will be paid on oil.

Meanwhile, the president is lost on oil.

Thank you bro, if she thinks she can sustain Nigeria economy with tax from states, she is a joker. Both MPC and CBN needs to re-evaluate their stance on forex restriction and adjust our interest rates to encourage local investments.

GEJ EFFORTS IN AGRICULTURE
For more than three decades, the successive government in Nigeria abandoned agriculture, which was the life line of any nation. Reliant on oil was the order of the day, ignoring the depth and opportunity that agriculture serves to Nigeria.
That reduces Nigeria which was in the 60s exporters of agriculture output to net importer, which had causes serious damages to our economy and currently.

GEJ observed that this error of past leaders must not be allowed to continue, and believe an intervention and transformation in the agriculture sector should and must be given rapt attention.

GEJ breaks the jinx in the fertiliser scam, that had prevented the practising farmers from been the beneficiary of the government subsidy of fertiliser.

GEJ also understand that non availability of storage facilities to preserve agriculture output during the period of its surplus, is also a factor that had contribute to food hike.

GEJ had built silos and other storage facilities in almost every part of the country. Include with this post, is the silos built by GEJ administration in Ilesha, Osun State.

And, the result of the GEJ administration intervention is already yielding results. Nigeria food importation had drastically reduces from over N1.6trn annually to N960bn in 2013. The figure is believed to decrease by more than 50% in 2015, and by 2016, it is predicted that Nigeria will attain self sufficiency in rice production and become an exporter.

To affirm the above stated figures, recently, due to economic impasse, the CBN devaluate Naira, which implies that for every import, we will have to pay more. But, that has not lead to food hike as it is the case in the past. This is so, because, our food import had in a large percentage reduced, and that we only needs to import few, which doesn't have more bearing on our economy.
GEJ is doing it, don't be an instrument to taking Nigeria back to the old failed days. Support GEJ.
Jonathan is OK! Vote Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for continued transformation.

Now is the time to teach that megalomaniac Harvard pompous woman her economics and Finance experience is guttered. She might be able to manage corporations as effectively as possible but Ngozi failed in Managing Nigerian Finance. Though, her failure was also GEJ's weakness and inability to provide the political platform and power for success. Segun Adesina still pulled it off in that regard though and now he head AFDB.

Kemi Adeosun may be young but she ain't naive .... she is energetic and has passion for success... I wish her success and wish my future SO would be more vibrant than her, NOI and their likes combined.

Nothing wrong with how she talks, i sense radicalism, and a strong disgust with the over dependence on oil, that will translate to a strong political will to diversify the economy.
