Happy Sunday fellas. I hope this week offers a lot of valid opportunities for us. So I decided to do a little story about holidays. According to Wikipedia, a holiday is a day set aside by custom or by law on which normal activities, especially business and work, are suspended or reduced. The importance of a holiday to uni students cannot be overemphasized however long or short it may be. Every student will like to stay home and relax, and most importantly, enjoy a stress less day or some stress less days or weeks or months or hmmm. Shout out to some "hardworking" lecturers that will always load us with assignments prior to any public holiday or worst still, keep us in class on that very holiday. Bad right? Some go as far as making sure that our practicals are organized during an after- semester holiday. That’s by the way though.
So what do we really achieve while "holidaying?". Many student prefer spending their time with family and friends, having fun, and all that. That’s what holidays are for after all! but hey, lets view it from a different perspective. The real perspective.
Nowadays, many employers of labour are not too interested in your "primary skill". They usually need you to do something extra, something you probably never really learnt at school, some "secondary" skills like driving, a good knowledge of some pc utilities like MS spread sheet, excel, little idea about programming, fabrication and countless others. We may think that these things are of little importance or can be learnt when needed but the truth is this; experience counts and it is easier to learn things when we are not under pressure. It feels much better when we learn things at our own pace. So folks, what are you doing? Think and start learning. You can learn many different things during many different holidays. Who knows what awkward skill our employer may seek in the future? Some dream of being self employed after graduating but the reality is that self employment require little capital and the requisite experience. Fact! So ultimately, we may just have to work as employees for a limited period of time and gain few years of experience before being self employed. I hope you find these advice useful. Any suggestion or counter suggestion? The comment box is yours.
