Tigers are not found naturally in (West) Africa, they are native to India.

Ekun refers specifically to leopard but can be applied to big cats as a general term.

West African soldiers in the East Indies might have brought home stories about tigers they saw, and thus introduced the species into the lexicon (or Europeans might also have done so).

Ogidan is the traditional name (oriki) of the Leopard. Just like ologini is the traditional name for cat. The full oriki is ogidan oloola iju, meaning ogidan-the one in the forest who has daggers, referring to the sharp claws of the leopard

The real meaning of Ekun is strong man. If someone is called Ekun, it means strong man. Omo ekun means child or children of a strong man or King. Ekun also means strong in Kemitic Egyptian.

Ogidan or Ekùn is the name for the leopard not tiger.
Leopard is found in sub-Saharan Africa but a tiger isn’t.
