Man jailed for attacking unfaithful wife

A mild-mannered grandfather was today jailed for attacking his wife after learning of her 30-year affair with his best man.

Brian Gibbs, 63, pushed wife Catherine, 55, down the stairs and stabbed her in the neck with a pair of hairdressing scissors in a "moment of madness".

Mrs Gibbs, a martial arts instructor, had told him two days earlier that she was leaving him for his former best friend Ron Mynott, who was also married.

His worst fears came true when she revealed they had been seeing each other behind his back on and off for the best part of their 35-year marriage.

Mr Mynott had been best man at the wedding in 1973.

Gibbs at first kept a lid on his emotional turmoil and he and his wife began to make "civilised" arrangements to divide up their home and belongings.

But at around 6am on 12 November last year, after letting the dog out and making his wife a cup of tea, he finally snapped and attacked her.

Gibbs, a self-employed builder of South Drive, Banstead, Surrey, admitted wounding with intent and was jailed for four-and-a-half years at the Old Bailey.

Judge Peter Thornton told him: "This attack, however inexplicable in its ferocity, did have an explanation.

"Your anger and your jealousy at her infidelity and your fear of losing her no doubt caused acute stress for you and led you to committing this offence.

"You are normally a quiet, non-violent, hard-working family man. This is a sad case and you acted completely out of character."

Gibbs, who wiped tears from his eyes during the hearing, was supported by family members in the public gallery but his wife was not there. The court heard that the couple had two grown-up sons together.

Richard Atchley, defending, said Mr Mynott had since left her - but that Gibbs's reaction was "to feel sorry for her".

"He is basically an amicable, gentle man," Mr Atchley said.

before the akward brigade comes to spoil this place can i say thank God they were found out. i am generally anti violence but they should have spared him going to jail. he is been let down.

Father who picked prostitute to take teen son's virginity as a gift spared jail

A man who sought out a prostitute to take his 14-year-old son’s virginity as a gift has been spared jail today.

The Polish national, who cannot be named for legal reasons, took the boy out in his car and allowed him to pick out a prostitute in Nottingham’s red-light district, a court heard.

But the 42-year-old father was arrested after the teenager chose an undercover police officer.

The full-time carer, from Bulwell, Nottingham, admitted a charge of trying to solicit a woman to have sex with a child and was given a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for a year.

The court heard that the father was arrested in the Mapperley area of Nottingham during an undercover operation by the city's vice squad.

Adrian Harris, prosecuting, said: "It was about 11.30pm on July 26 last year. An undercover police officer whose code name was Sarah said a car drove up to her. It was driven by the defendant who beckoned her over.

"He was not alone in the car and in the passenger seat was a boy. The defendant said: 'Hello baby, how much?'

"She said: 'It depends what you want.' He replied: 'Come on baby, what is it that you do? How much for a proper shag for him?' And then he pointed to his son."

Mr Harris said the undercover officer replied the cost would be £25 but this was negotiated down to £20.

"The defendant said he would pull over and at this point he was arrested by plainclothes police officers and both he and the boy were interviewed separately."

Mr Harris added: "The boy said that they had driven past the girl and his dad pointed to her and said 'will she do?'

"He said 'yes' and they had turned round. He said his dad did this because he was still a virgin and he was taking care of that for him."
