Do you remember those teenage days when wearing your traditional native attire was looked upon as a taboo by your peer group? You could be tagged "that villager" if you wore anything close to traditional. That was the age when Nigerians respected the western clothings which was seen as much more reputable for work and also for Sunday church service. Appearance really mattered a lot and most of the time it determined your standard and educational status in the society.

During these times, ladies couldn't wait to show off their western and European made hats, jewelries and shoes ,so they would be the point of admiration and focus by their friends and men looking for relationships and marriage through church socialization. Wearing western attires showed a man how upgraded a lady's  social orientation was and taste for class.

Well! It's definitely not so today.. Nigerians and African just got tried of following this so called mordern trend. They decided to step back, looking at their rich and colorful traditional heritage, clothings and accessories, the traditional native African fashion came back to life abruptly.

Yes, youngsters actually feel trendy when they showcase European and modern clothing. Most of the time, they see native attires for grown ups and for people who are not into interesting stuffs the mordern age has to offer.

With the crazy breakthrough at which  Nigerian entertainers stormed the music industry recently, African and Nigerian fashion and music has gone hand in hand. This has encouraged youths and teenagers to feel more confident about wearing the traditional clothings to social events and also religious gatherings.Nigerians and Africans as a whole are beginning to embrace who they are as blacks.Their root culture and heritage, they would never allow to be buried in the dust of time afterall.

Judging this debate   from  another   perspective, it is better to balance the fashion trend. We must accept our cultural style of dressing but we sure cannot totally eradicate the western and European fashion style which  has had significant influence on us Africans. Sometimes fashion designers who are able to blend both cultures are seen as genius and their works magnificent.
