The best way to protect yourself and your home from fire is to identify and remove fire hazards. Majority of house fire death occurs in homes without fire extinguishers. A fire escape plan should be practiced as frequently as possible, as this can save lives. If a fire ever occurs in your home, GET OUT, STAY OUT and CALL for help. These additional precautions will also help minimize the risk of a fire in your home:

*Set aside a special closet for dangerous tools and combustible materials that you don't want your children to touch. Use a good lock on the door and a heat detector inside to alert you of any fire danger. Also, keep matches and candles away from your kids as any open flame can pose great danger.

*Have fire extinguishers in your home- You should have at least one portable fire extinguisher in your house that is within easy access. Note that these fire extinguishers don’t last forever and may be good for only 5 to 15 years, so monitor the pressure gauge and recharge, service or replace your extinguisher if need be.

*Avoid overloading your electrical system. Don't run extension cords under rugs or carpets. The cords wear easily and may short out, causing a fire.

*When cooking or frying with oil take extra care, if the oil starts to smoke never put water or food in it, instead take it off the heat and leave it to cool

*Unplug all electrical appliance when not in use. An outlet or switch that is unusually warm or hot to the touch may indicate a potentially dangerous wiring condition. In such situations call an electrician to check the wiring.

*Don’t smoke indoors as this may help prevent unfortunate incidents

*Don’t leave fire unattended- You’ve a fireplace, a stove, gas cooker or a grill? Always keep an eye on them when they’re fired up and extinguish the fire before leaving the house and before going to bed.

*Stop, drop and roll- If you ever catch fire, extinguish it by staying put, dropping to the ground and rolling around. Running around like how people do in movies may only help to catch people’s attention, but it won’t make the flames go away.

*Keep cooking appliances such as toasters away from curtains or other flammable materials.

*Beware of complicated barriers on your doors and windows- Have an installed burglar bars on your windows and doors, make sure they have a fast security release or can become unlocked or detached during a time of emergency. Or if you live in a multi-story residence, a fire escape ladder is one of the most useful items to have in your home.
