Ooni, Oba Aromolaran May Clash Over Osun Monarchs Council- Punch by farem: 9:31pm On Dec 04, 2015

Crisis appears to be looming between the new
Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and the Owa
Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran,
over the chairmanship of the Osun State Council
of Traditional Rulers.
The late Ooni, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, was the
permanent chairman of the council before his
demise on July 28 while Oba Aromolaran has
been acting as the chairman of the council after
Sijuwade’s death.
Aromolaran had, while briefing journalists in
Osogbo on Thursday after the meeting of the
council, said other monarchs unanimously had
adopted him as the substantive chairman of the
council during the Thursday meeting.
Aromolaran explained that the Ataoja of Osogbo,
Oba Jimoh Olanipekun, moved the motion that he
(Aromolaran) should continue to lead the council
as the substantive chairman from Thursday.
He said, “We met today and discussed the
chairmanship of the council (of traditional rulers).
Kabiyesi, the Ataoja of Osogbo, moved that I
should not only continue as the acting chairman
but as the chairman as from today.
“By the grace of God, I will not disappoint (them).
While Oba Okunade Sijuwade was alive, I was the
one presiding over the meetings because he was
around 85 years old.
“Now that the Obas have unanimously adopted me
as the chairman, I will ensure unity and progress
of the council.”
Speaking on the coronation of the Ooni, which is
scheduled to hold on Monday, Aromolaran said
members of the Osun Council of Traditional Rulers
might not attend the ceremony except they
received a formal invitation from those in charge
of the ceremony.
He said traditional rulers were not idle persons
who attended ceremonies they were not invited
to.
Aromolaran added, “If there is a formal invitation,
we will attend the coronation. We have not
received any letter of invitation up till now.”
He expressed readiness to work with the Osun
State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, to address
the economic crisis confronting the state.
According to him, the council, under his
chairmanship, had prepared a proposal, which he
said would be submitted to the governor very
soon.
However, one of the associates of the new Ooni,
Mr. Biyi Odunlade, when contacted to know the
position of Oba Ogunwusi on the chairmanship of
the council, said the Aromolaran would not be
allowed to distort history.
Odunlade stated, “The Ooni has been the
permanent chairman (of the council) even since
the time of the old Oyo State. The Ooni is the
head of traditional rulers not only in Osun State
but in Yorubaland. This is a distortion of history.
It is not true and it cannot be true.”
Odunlade, who is the chairman, Media Committee
of the Ooni’s coronation, said the committee had
dispatched letters of invitation to the monarchs
individually.
He said they were invited and would be accorded
respects due to them at the ceremony.
Our correspondent gathered that some of the
traditional rulers, who attended the meeting held
at the conference hall of the Ministry of Finance,
Osogbo on Thursday, did not support the motion
that Aromolaran be made the substantive
chairman of the council.
Sources told our correspondent that some
monarchs present at the meeting opposed the
motion and refused to be part of the decision to
make Aromolaran the substantive chairman

Why didn't he claim the ooni throne as well? It was vacant for weeks.

Not what the governor cannot resolve, though.

I don't know what's wrong with most of our traditional rulers of modern days, why will the Owa Obokun of Ijesha be attempting to preside over a traditional council that has the Ooni of Ife as member? Why are they trying to distort historical culture? Beside, the Ooni of Ife is the permanent chairman of Osun state council of Obas and not Okunade Sijuwade. The new Ooni of Ife must take his rightful place as chairman of the state council of traditional rulers without hitch.

it saddens my heart to see that the traditional rulers who are suppose to be the custodian and also preserve yoruba culture and traditions are the ones who are damaging our referred culture and traditions. it is an aberration and disrespect to Yoruba people for anybody to have the audacity to challenge the authority of Ooni. he is indisputable the head. we should not turn our history upside down for the sake of coming generation. how on earth will an oba in osun state will be comfortable to place himself above Ooni. Osun constitution recognizes Ooni as the permanent chairman of Oba in Osun state. Our history also place Ooni as the head of all. Osun Obaship council should do the needful and stop insulting yoruba before other ethnic group in naija.

The truth of the matter is that the traditional council is an aberration created by modernism, it has no precedent in Yoruba traditional history. As such, it should be treated in a modern way, so that all these Obas can operate with their dignity intact. There was no forum for Obas to meet in the days of old, and an Oba never left his terrain to go fraternize with other Obas. Each Oba was the representative of supreme deity in his domain, he was answerable to nobody (Kabiyesi) and he bowed down to no one.

Coralling all these Obas together under the aegis of a perfunctory 'traditional council' inevitably leads to friction except other Obas agree to subordinate their personality to that of the Ooni, as they have been doing it all this years. This is culturally wrong, because Ori Ade bows down to nobody, except by force of conquest.

You are very correct. Every oba should be oba over his domain. There is the need to stop all these supremacy wahala. This same supremacy battle is one of the things that led to the separation of osun from oyo. The Alaafin couldn't bring himself under any other monarch in the name of old oyo state traditional oba council where the Ooni was the head. Osun was eventually carved out of oyo and the alaafin was made permanent head for a while, but he eventually lost out again as Alao akala(an ogbomosho man traditionally subject to the Soun) started the rotation of the leadership amongst the obas in oyo state.

I believe Osun's rotation is about to start too due to the fact that all other obas like the owa, ata oja e.t.c see themselves as first class deserving to be the head of the council, and aregbesola is also traditionally a subject to the owa of ijesha and not the Ooni.
