Governor Shettima Warns Against Rising Biafra Protests

Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno has warned Biafra agitators not to allow their protest reach the northern part of the country as the region was still dealing with Boko Haram insurgency.

Leadership reports that the governor who is also the chairman of Northern Governors’ Forum called for “firm measures and on alert” so as to prevent a repeat of the violent Biafra protest that occurred in Onitsha, Anambra state on Wednesday, December 2.

The protest resulted in violence after a face-off between Biafra protesters and security operatives which eventually led to the death of two police officers and some protesters.

Shettima said Boko Haram violent in the country was enough problem and the country could not afford to battle separatist protests at a time when the whole country is expected to stand firm in unity.

“The evils being perpetrated by the Boko Haram insurgents against innocent Muslims, Christians and followers of other religions, regardless of their geo-political divides since the last six years, were more than enough trouble for the country. Hence; there is need to come together as a single unit to collectively fight terrorism that is a threat to all law-abiding citizens of the nation.”

“We condemn the Wednesday crisis in very strong term. We have been in touch with one another today. The governors of major cities in the North in particular, have been in critical touch to share thoughts and we have collectively taken firm measures to ensure that the violence doesn’t spread to any part of the 19 northern states and we will also be working with our colleagues in the South to nip the crisis in the bud, but we will not disclose the measures we have taken so that those who may want to take advantage of the Onitsha mayhem don’t know our strategies.”

Meanwhile, the Oodua Peoples Congress has warned Biafra protesters not to move their campaign to the south western part of the country as they would not stand by and watch the region turned into ‘a theatre of war’.

You should tell Buhari to release Nnamdi Kanu to reduce the tension. Moreover, it is not a crime for nation to seek for independence and stay on their own, after all, our unity produced; Boko haram, corruption, ethnic cleansing, religious crisis, fulani killings, poverty and economic failure. Let every regions go and manage themselves and do as they wish.
