No disrepeck intended.

I was only echoing the usual refrain of those who accused Ambode's predecessor, Fashola, of being elitist.

On the Badagry axis thread, I got deflated when the Lekki thread was being tossed around like a yoyo.

I hope I can receive enough motivation to rescutitate it along with the thread for the Ikorodu axis.

Contributions to the three threads are heartily welcome!

It's concealed elitism jare both of them...seems only people on the HIGHland pay proper tax with photo friendly backgrounds

Ambode just went full experimental on the only road leading to that axis.... Ikeja/Airport road, Lagos-Abeokuta road all at once!

There is/was a lot of praise for Ambode in the badagry axis. Misplaced imo considering the two major things i was interested in were practically dead during his tenure- the railway towards the axis and the expressway that were very visible during Fashola's tenure- Maybe 4 years in not enough...

Ambode actually hit the ground running.

Within two weeks of assuming office, he identified and personally visited traffic bottlenecks in the metropolis :

http://akinwunmiambode.com/dev/ambode-visits-major-traffic-points-approves-construction-of-pedestrian-bridge-at-berger-bus-stop/

By December 2015 (within 8 months of assuming office), he had commissioned identified solutions and mobilised contractors to site.

The Ajah bridge and Freedom Way construction began around December 2015 and were ready for commissioning by May 29 2017 - along with other major constructions across Lagos, including "hinterlands" like Alimosho.

He completed the Ojodu-Berger Flyover Intersection; 21 roads and two bridges with a combined stretch of 27.4 kilometers in Alimosho-Agbado-Oke-Odo area within good time and they made significant impact on traffic management.

How about the traffic he caused in that Iyana Ipaja axis where he was constructing BRT road that destroyed the existing road and made commuting hell? The traffic along that Bolade, Ikeja Along, Dopemu, etc was just a nightmare. Dont be fooled. Most of those road construction in the hinterlands were done by Fashola. He completed the roads done in Ayobo and built more but Ipaja, Oke-Odo etc were done by Fashola

I feel the pain of those affected, having suffered similar in the past myself.

However, I believe the now slow pace of work on some projects and complete work stoppage on some others is unconnected with the politics of second term, as I mentioned earlier.

Ambode went gung-ho on road construction when he first came in.

No matter what, he deserves credit for that.

Ipaja-Ayobo Road: Ambode gives contractor 3 months to complete project

ON August 19, 2015 3:35 PM

Lagos – Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Wednesday pledged to complete the seven-kilometre Ipaja-Ayobo Road in Alimosho Local Government Area of the state within the next three months.

Ambode made the disclosure during an inspection of some road construction projects in the State.

The administration of former Gov. Babatunde Fashola awarded contract for the reconstruction of the dual-carriage road in May 2011, initially billed to last for 18 months.

Ambode said he decided to inspect the project in order to quickly mobilise the contractor to expedite action so that the project could be completed on time.

According to him, the completion is key to unlocking socio-economic opportunities in the area.

”We have directed the contractor of the project to work day an and ensure that the project is completed within the next three months.

”In the main time, they will provide palliatives to ease the stress experienced by residents and I plead that you give that maximum cooperation to achieve this.

”Alimosho deserves more than this road because you are the greater part of the state. We will work toward providing a fire station and water works in Alimosho, ”he said.

The governor also visited Shomolu Local Government Area to inspect the Igi-Olugbi, Okupe and Deji- Aladejobi Road construction around Ladilak, Bariga, where he expressed displeasure over the slow pace of work.

Mr Olatunji Showole, a representative of HFP Engineering Nig. Ltd. working on the road, said that their major challenge was the relocation of two electricity transformers on the road.

”The mojor challenge is the relocation of services such as two electricity transformers and poles as well as the water services in Igi- Olugbi and Okupe roads.

”But the Power officials and water works officials have been mobilsed to help us with the relocation so that work can continue in earnest.

”Presently, we have finished about 70 per cent of Igi- Ologbi Road, which is the longest relocation to have been completed on Deji-Aladejobi road.

”Between now and January 2016, the three roads will be completed, ” he said

Ambode appealed to Shomolu residents to be patient and urged the contractor to ensure speedy work to alleviate the sufferings of residents.

”I am not pleased with the slow pace of work on these roads. We will not accept anything that will make life unbearable for our people.

”The contractor must provide palliative so that motorists can ply these roads before they are completed.

”I used to live in Shomolu and Bariga and I understand the plight of the people. Therefore, this government will ensure comfortable lives for the people, ” Ambode said.

The governor also visited the Oshodi market where he urged market men and women to be law abiding by refraining from selling on the road.(NAN)

Alimosho’ll soon become new Victoria Island – Ambode

ON December 21, 2015 10:20 PM / IN News /

By Olasunkanmi Akoni

Lagos — Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has said Alimosho would soon become the new Victoria Island.
The governor said this yesterday when he unveiled plans to transform Ebute-Meta into a tourist haven stating that he will establish a recreation park on the stretch of land overlooking the lagoon, adjacent to the Adekunle axis of the Third Mainland Bridge.

Also yesterday the Governor commissioned the Ipaja-Ayobo and Ikotun-Ejigbo Roads.

He also inspected the on-going projects across the state promising that many of the projects would be completed before the end of May next year when Lagos state would be 50 years-old.

While at Ipaja, Ambode promised to commence construction works on Ishefun-Ayetoro Road, promising residents of Alimosho that Alimosho would soon become the new Victoria Island.

According to him, “Three months ago, you will all recall that we came to this particular road and we promised the people of Mosan-Okunola that we will deliver the Ipaja -Ayobo Road before Christmas, and it is on the strength of that promise that we are here today. Thank God, we have seen to the completion of this road; it has street lights beginning from Ipaja round about to the end.

“As much as we have kept our promise and delivered even before the projected day, the residents should also maintain good use of this road and cooperate with the government as we extend development to this neighbourhood. I just want to assure the people of Alimosho axis that this government is right behind you and we would do everything possible to turn Alimosho to Victoria Island,” Governor Ambode said.

The Governor also commissioned the Ejigbo road and assured residents that street light would be installed on the road from Ikotun roundabout to the Isolo Campus of Lagos Polytechnic within three months.

Other projects the Governor inspected yesterday included the on-going construction at Brown Street Oshodi where he was briefed by the project Manager for Lobrics Construction Company, Mr Baha.

The Governor said the project which commenced about six weeks ago is now over 40 percent completed, expressing optimism that the residents in the area would enjoy the benefits of the new road when completed.

The Chairman of Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area, Adeola Olajobi Dawood briefed the Governor on the challenges of the adjourning Igbehinadun and Inasa Streets, as the Governor ordered the Public Works Corporation to rehabilitate both streets within the next seven days, charging the contractor to ensure the completion of Brown Street by the end of February 2016.

The Governor also urged the residents to continue to cooperate with the contractor towards delivering the projects within the stipulated time frame.

At the Oshodi Resettlement Market, Governor Ambode ordered the Public Works Corporation to resurface the car park in the market in preparation for its reopening.

He also advised the developer of the market to consider a rent-to-own modality for acquisition of the shops, saying that a monthly payment plan would prevent the shops from being hijacked by businessmen.

Gov. Ambode promises more development in sub-urban communities

ON April 2, 2018 5:26 PM / IN News /

Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Monday promised that his administration would continue to make every part of the state economically viable and liveable by opening up and developing sub-urban communities.

Ambode gave the assurance at the inauguration of two bridges and 19 roads around the Lagos-Ogun boundary, in Alimosho Local Government Area of the state.

The two bridges are the New Aiyetoro Bridge in Ayobo-Ipaja Local Council Development Area and the New Ikola road with bridge (old Odo Obasanjo Bridge), both in Alimosho LGA.

Some of the 19 roads are Ikola Road (from Ipaja/Command to Ilo River); Ogunseye Road (from Ajasa/Command to Ikola Road); Oko Filling Road (from AIT to Ilo River) and Osenatu Ilo road (from Ibari Road to Ilo River).

Others include Amikanle Road (from AIT to Ogunseye Road); Aina Aladi road (from AIT to Ilo River) and Aiyetoro Road (from New Market/Ishefun Road intersection to Ilo River).

The construction of the roads and bridges, handled by Visible Construction Company, was flagged-off in March 2017.

Ambode said it was imperative to open up sub-urban communities to decongest the urban centres, reduce traffic congestion and create better life for the people.

“Alimosho has been a loyal constituency since Asiwaju’s administration.

“So, in return, we are giving you the dividends of democracy with these roads, so that we can connect you to the rest of Lagos.

“Just as we have connected the Itele community in Ogun State, we are trying to do the same on Epe-Ijebu-Ode Road, Ikorodu-Imota-Itokin road and it is the same thing that we are trying to do on Mile-2-Badagry and Seme road.

“It is imperative that we do these roads so that we boost economic integration with neighbouring states,” he said.
Ambode said such development would also reduce the rush to the centre and allow new families and home owners to build up in other places.

He said that the new roads would serve as alternative routes to decongest the Abeokuta Expressway and reduce travel time.

“This inauguration is historic because it was Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s vision. He started it with the LASU-Iba road up to Igando and Egbe.

“My predecessor, Gov. Raji Fashola, took it up to Ipaja; all in a bid to build a new economy in this particular axis.
“So, this administration has continued from Ipaja to Ayobo to Command and the bridge constructed in Aboru to link Abesan.

“Today, we are inaugurating a total distance of 27.4 km of roads with two bridges which we completed in one year. So, this inauguration is very significant.

“These roads are alternative routes to decongest the Abeokuta Expressway. You can take these alternative routes and go all the way to Ipaja up to Badagry.

“This was not done with my money. It is your tax money that we have used to provide and improve infrastructure and the economy of this constituency,” he said.

The governor promised to dredge the Ilo River and construct more roads in Alimosho – Adekoya Road, Suberu-Oje Road, Makinde Road, old Ota Road Ishefun and Ijon Road.

“We would also connect it with a jetty so you can take a boat ride between this area and Marina in 20 minutes,” he said.

Ambode urged residents to continue to perform their civic responsibilities by paying their taxes, saying that the government would give them more value than the taxes paid.

He also told the residents to register and collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

“My message is that I want our people to take voters registration seriously.

“It is your civic right, it is the only thing you can use to lend your voice to government,” he said.

Also speaking, Sen. Solomom Olamilekan, representing Lagos West Senatorial District, said that Alimosho LGA was one of the biggest beneficiaries of the Ambode led-administration with the construction of the roads.
“Alimosho residents have come out en masse to welcome Gov. Ambode for this Easter gift — 19 roads and two bridges — in a single LGA. One of them is the longest bridge in the state after the Third Mainland Bridge.

“Before the construction of these bridges and roads, residents were moving out due to the deplorable state of the roads, but now the population in the area has doubled.
“This means that Alimosho, with its large population, is solidly declaring its support for you to seek a second term in the 2019 election,” he said.

Appreciating the governor on behalf of the communities, Mr Abiodun Coker, Chairman, Community Development Association, appreciated Ambode for transforming the area.

Coker appealed to the governor to consider the construction of the Megida-Ishefun road in Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA to reduce the hardship experienced by the residents in the area.

Mr Shakiru Yusuf, Chairman, Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA, expressed his gratitude to the governor for the construction of the two bridges and roads.

Yusuf appealed to the governor to fulfil his promise of situating a fish farming project in the area.
According to him, the project will create employment opportunities and boost economic activities.

In his address, Mr Ade Akinsanya, Commissioner, Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, said that the network of roads would ease the burden of plying bad roads.

Akinsanya urged the communities in the area to protect the public assets by ensuring they are put to good use and not turned to markets or car parks for vehicles and trucks.

Tinubu at 65, commissions projects, says Ambode has made him proud

ON March 30, 2017 2:20 AM / IN News /

lMoslem, Christian leaders in prayer sessions
By Olasunkanmi Akoni & Monsuru Olowoopejo

lagos—National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday, poured accolades on the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, over his sterling performance in the last 22 months, saying that the Governor has made him proud.

Speaking while commissioning network of roads, link bridge and health centre in Alimosho area of the State as part of activities to mark his 65th birthday, Tinubu said the achievements of Ambode in office was a reflection of a Governor who is not only a thinker but a doer, and expressed satisfaction that he was delivering on the promises to the people.

He said: “Akinwunmi Ambode has reflected that clearly here today. I want to say thank you because experience is a great teacher and I am experienced. I am on the spot and I have watched things in Lagos since my tenure ended.

“I was worried hell when you (Ambode) took over, not about your credibility, character or capacity, but because however wise or smart a man is, if there is no resources to back the ideas, production would be zero, progress would be zero.

“When you (Ambode) took over, I knew you inherited a burden of debt. The debt profile of Lagos was high, I was wondering how you will reengineer and face the challenges to make progress.

“Today, I can see your report card, you have scored well, and you have shown prudency especially in the judicious use of resources of the state.

“You didn’t disappoint us. Ambode is silently achieving, meticulously planning, religiously executing and brilliantly giving results for Lagos State,” the former Lagos governor said.

Tinubu said all over Lagos, the results of good governance were being felt by the people, and wished Ambode sound health and wisdom to continue to lead the State.

Before the commssioning of projects, Moslem and Christian leaders held prayer sessions at Tinubu’s Bourdillon, Ikoyi, Lagos residence.

The Moslem prayers were led by the Chief Imam of Lagos, Sheik Garba Akintola Ibrahim while Bishop Olanrewaju Obembe led the Christian prayers.

In his remarks, at the commissioning, Governor Ambode described the event as a historic day in the life of the people of Alimosho and the State in general.

Governor Ambode also flagged off the construction of a network of roads within the boundaries of Lagos and Ogun States, saying that it was in honour of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he described as the brain behind the 21st century Lagos.

He expressed optimism that the roads which have been identified for immediate construction and rehabilitation would complete the new face of Alimosho constituency, saying that work would commence next week.

He listed the roads to include Ikola Road with Odo Obasanjo Bridge – 6.4km (from Ipaja/Command to Ilo River); Ogunseye Road – 1.75km (from Ajasa/Command to Ikola Road);Oko Filling Road – 1.5km (from AIT to Ilo River); Osenatu Ilo road – 620m (from Ibari Road to Ilo River); Amikanle road – 3.1km (from AIT to Ogunseye Road); Aina Aladi road – 1.9km (from AIT to Ilo River) and Aiyetoro Road with a bridge– 1.4km (from New Market/Ishefun Road intersection to Ilo River).

He however appealed to the affected communities to cooperate with the contractors to enable them deliver the network of roads not later than the scheduled date.

Also, Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State and Senator representing Lagos West, Olamilekan Adeola said it was obvious that Ambode started well and is doing well, and solicited the cooperation of the people to engender further dividends of democracy and good governance.

I received my bill yesterday.

I observed that the previous billing system where the amount due increases as the bill ages has been replaced with a single flat amount.

Let's see how Sanwo-Olu will adrress the matter.

I suspect he won't touch it though. He will leave matter for Matthias, as our people will say.

I still maintain that Ambode set out to achieve a lot in the area of infrastructural development.

He went at it with a lot of zeal.

Alimosho, in particular, benefitted significantly from his administration.

Aregbesola, Yayi (Sen Adeola Olamilekan) and the other APC leaders in the area all testified to this.

Even Asiwaju said:

Sanwo-Olu: Fourth Mainland Bridge Not Our Priority

Olaseni Durojaiye

Concerned with the seeming slow pace at which some critical road projects are being executed in Lagos State, the governorship candidate of All Progressive Congress (APC), Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said the construction of Fourth Mainland Bridge would not his priority if elected.

He said this while fielding questions from respondents on radio programme recently, assuring Lagos residents of their commitment to ensure early completion of the Lagos-Badagry expressway.

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his running mate, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, emphasised the need to ensure the completion of ongoing critical road projects that included the Lagos Badagry expressway

According to him, both Badagry and Lekki-Epe expressways are so critical to the economy of Lagos, that no effort must be spared to ensure their early completion. To this end, issue of the proposed 4th Mainland Bridge may be delayed.

Specifically, the governorship candidate explained that the ongoing 60-kilometre Lagos-Badagry expressway project being executed by the state government should be completed as early as possible.

He noted that the project “has two major intermodal transport schemes namely; the Lagos-Badagry Expressway and the Light Rail Mass Transit with their accompanying infrastructure- 10 lanes superhighway taking off from Eric Moore interchange and traverses westward through Orile Iganmu, Alaba Oro, Mile 2, Festac, Agboju, Iyana Iba, Okokomaiko, Iyana Era, Ijanikin, Agbara, Ibereko and terminated at Badagry.

“The goal is to connect Lagos with the ECOWAS countries. The initiative would no doubt, enhances the commercial and other business activities between the affected neighbouring countries.”

Besides, he acknowledged the importance of Lekki-Epe Expressway, which he said would be expanded and reconstructed, especially, from where it stopped now to the Lekki Free Trade Zone (LFTZ) in Akodo.

The traffic he caused by his BRT road expansion business overshadows any inner road he did. From road that I was driving my brand new sedan on, it turned to road that only my rugged SUV could drive on yet was always having car trouble. Then the refuse will pile high on the road and block all lanes leaving just one lane for both inwards and outbound traffic in the same inner roads. I am so happy that I don't have to traverse that road again. I haven't been to that area since Dec 2017 and I have no plans of going there anytime soon. I still have nightmares remembering my almost daily commute then.
I first went there in early 2015 and a lot of those inner roads were just built, I am absolutely certain of it. He expanded roads in Ayobo, Ikola and AIT area (forgotten the name).

Lagos to relocate 400 Jakande Estate residents

November 25, 2019
Tajudeen Adebanjo

Lagos State government said it would relocate 400 residents of the Lateef Jakande Estate because of reconstruction.
The estate is in Ilasan, Eti-Osa Local Government Area.

The relocation, Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai said, will be temporary to one of the state-owned schemes which will soon be completed.

Akinderu-Fatai said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration is determined to regenerate the housing estate.

He said: “We are committed to the regeneration of Ilasan and other parts of the state in line with sustainable development goal SDG 11 which is focussed on creating sustainable and livable cities and communities.

“The regeneration programme will involve reconstruction of dilapidated structures and repair of run down infrastructures which are no longer safe for further human utilisation.

“In regenerating the estate, we will also take cognisance of access to quality education, health facilities, efficient public transportation, refuse collection services, sewage, human safety and good air quality, among other things.

“We are working with other ministries and agencies to promoting a robust neighbourhood life through availability of structures that encourage community activities.”

Akinderu-Fatai said habitation in Ilasan is dangerous and injurious to healthy living, hence the government’s determination to intervene by reconstructing the estate as soon as possible.

He explained that the decision was based on the need to set good standards of sustainability for future generations of Lagosians.

“The future of our state is very important, hence we must make the right decisions today in order to bequeath a legacy of sustainability to the generations yet unborn”.

“We are set to make the provision of housing beyond mere shelter by promoting a better quality of life through enhancing inclusive and sustainable urbanisation,” he added.

Lagos issues ultimatum to owners of illegal structures in Lekki

Sunday, December 15, 2019 10:15 am | Metro

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit (Taskforce) over the weekend issued a 7-Day ‘Removal Order’ to “all owners/occupants of illegal structures, shanties, kiosks and containarised shops” at ‘Marwa Waterside’ area of Lekki in Lagos.

Speaking on the removal order, the Chairman of the Agency, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, disclosed that the ‘Removal Order’ became imperative in preparation for a road construction along the coastal road which would serve as an alternative route for the Lekki-Epe Expressway and enhance free flow of traffic in the corridor.

According to him, “Illegal business operators like Iron benders, Mechanics, food/fruits vendors and others have turned the area into an eye-sore. In addition, they have littered the entire area with indiscriminate dumping of refuse and waste materials. It is interesting to note that none of the owners, occupants and illegal business operators have any permit from the State Government”, a press release signed by Adebayo Taofiq, Head, Public Affairs Unit of Lagos State Task Force quoted Egbeyemi.

He reiterated that immediately after the expiration of the ‘Removal Order’ on Thursday, December 19, 2019 operatives of the Agency will embark on a “clean-up exercise in the area as well as clampdown on all criminal elements disturbing law-abiding residents within Marwa waterside and the entire Lekki axis.”

The Chairman also implored all illegal occupants of any of the government lands/properties across the state to immediately vacate same as anyone caught would be seriously dealt with in accordance with the law.

In a related development, operatives of the Agency have impounded 98 illegal commercial motorcyclists found plying restricted routes at Ikorodu and Agric Bus-Stop.

According to the Chairman “The Agency had issued several warnings to these illegal commercial motorcyclists through their various associations to desist from plying 475 restricted routes including highways and bridges across the State”.

CSP Egbeyemi confirmed that the combined efforts of the Agency with other Police formations as directed by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police CP Hakeem Odumosu would drastically reduce the menace of motorcycle operators on restricted routes across the state.

He however warned members of the public not to patronise illegal commercial motorcyclists on illegal routes as both the rider and passenger are liable if arrested.

Lagos to knock off more roundabouts on Lekki-Epe Expressway

by Joshua Bassey On Dec 27, 2019 Lekki Epe Expressway

More of the massive roundabouts on the Lekki-Epe Expressway Lagos, are to be removed in what aimed at further improving vehicular traffic flow on that corridor, BusinessDay has learnt.

Officials of the state ministry of transportation, led by the commissioner in charge of the ministry,

Frederic Oladeinde are said to be out to inspect the corridor, and identify how many more of the roundabouts will have to go.

It was learnt that apart from the roundabouts on Lekki-Epe Expressway, the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration, is also considering knocking off similar structures on roads in other parts of the commercial city, based on expert advice from urban transportation consultants, who identified such roundabouts as contributing to the gridlock being experienced in Lagos.

BusinessDay gathered that about 27 of such structures had been identified across the state.
It would be recalled that the immediate past administration of Akinwunmi Ambode, was the first, in 2016 to remove some of roundabouts on the Lekki-Epe corridor.

Among the ones removed by the Ambode-led government were planned the 4th Roundabout (Elegushi); 5th Roundabout (Jakande) and the 8th Roundabout (VGC).

Anofi Elegushi, then acting commissioner for transportation under Ambode, had said: ”This administration is determined to reduce the stress experienced by motorists and residents on this road.

“The roundabouts were replaced with traffic lights, expansion of the roads and provision of dedicated turning lanes as well as additional lay-bys.

“This will surely decongest traffic in this area, even for commercial vehicles, the travel time will reduce and they will have enough turnaround by earning more.

Biodun Otunola, managing director of Planet Project Ltd, which handled the contract had observed: “Movement has been made easy for both motorists and the pedestrians.”

Gridlock: Lagos begins removal of four roundabouts

METRO AND CRIME

As part of the strategies to completely tackle gridlock across the metropolis, the Lagos State government has begun the removal of some roundabouts identified as the major causes of traffic gridlock frequently experienced by motorists.

New Telegraph learnt that the identified four roundabouts are: Ikotun, 2nd roundabout on the Lekki-Epe Expressway, Allen Avenue roundabout and Maryland. It was learnt that the roundabouts were responsible for the hindrances and traffic bottleneck experienced by the motorists in the areas.

With the removal, statues, giant billboards and other things located at the roundabouts will be removed while the structures is expected to wear a new looks to ensure the free flow of traffic.

Briefing journalists on the plans, the state’s Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Fredrick Oladinde described the decision as part of Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s committment to ensuring reduction in traffic congestion by resolving key gridlock points.

According to him, the government started off through discovery of 60 traffic gridlocks junctions and areas across the state.
He said: “We are gathered here this morning to discuss the update and progress report this Ministry has made in combating these traffic gridlocks.

Seven pilot schemes were unlocked, we progressed in the traffic management measures to 27 locations and now we are working on 4 major junctions by removing the roundabouts presently causing chaos during turning movements.”

He added that motorists encountered a lot of challenges during peak hours, saying that that the junction improvement would enhance free flow of vehicular movement when completed.
He added: “Sufficiently, the junction improvement work that is being conducted on the four roundabouts includes the following:

“Removal of roundabouts, separate streams of traffic through Traffic Signal Lights, (TSL) synchronize all TSLs through intelligent traffic systems which will recognise the densities of traffic streams and give priorities accordingly.

“Introduce stacking lanes for both left and right turns at these junctions which will also contribute to increasing the capacities of our roads at the junctions thereby reducing travel time.”

To address the traffic gridlock challenge when the junction improvement project is ongoing, he added that the government will upgrade alternative routes so that traffic can move upstream of choke points.

I can confirm that work on the 2nd roundabout has started with the dismantling of the giant billboard.

Up next should be Phase 1 (1st roundabout) and Abraham Adesanya.

These roundabouts constitute major choke points.

Solutions should also be found to traffic jam starting at Jakande in the morning as well as Igbo Efon and Ikate/Freedom Way junction in the evening

No going back on ridding Lagos of traffic snarl – Sanwo-Olu

Sunday, December 29, 2019 10:07 pm | Metro | 0 L-R: Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde; Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Planet projects Engineer during the Governor’s inspection of the removal of the 2nd Lekki Roundabout on Saturday, December 28, 2019.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reassured Lagosians of his administration’s commitment to rid the State of gridlock.
Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance Saturday evening while inspecting the removal of 2nd Lekki roundabout as part of Junction improvements for free flow of vehicular movements along the Lekki corridors.

The State government has embarked on the removal of some roundabouts identified as the major causes of traffic gridlock being experienced by motorists.

Four roundabouts including Ikotun, 2nd roundabout on the Lekki-Epe Expressway, Allen Avenue roundabout and Maryland will be removed to pave the for road expansion and free flow of traffic.

The government, through the Ministry of transportation says the removal of some roundabouts and street furniture such as giant bill boards will give room for road expansion and strategically ease off traffic congestion in some parts of the metropolis.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, while at the project site, encouraged the contractors handling the projects to keep up with the current pace of work so as to ensure its completion in record time.

Last week, the state’s Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Fredrick Oladeinde, who accompanied Governor Sanwo-Olu to inspect the project, described the decision to improve the junctions as a strategic repositioning of the roads to ease traffic congestion.

According to him, the government started off through discovery of 60 traffic gridlocks junctions and areas across the state.

He told journalists that: “Sufficiently, the junction improvement work that is being conducted on the four roundabouts includes the following:
“Removal of roundabouts, separate streams of traffic through Traffic Signal Lights, (TSL) synchronize all TSLs through intelligent traffic systems which will recognise the densities of traffic streams and give priorities accordingly.

“Introduce stacking lanes for both left and right turns at these junctions which will also contribute to increasing the capacities of our roads at the junctions thereby reducing travel time.”

In the same vein, Governor Sanwo-Olu visited the Lekki coastal roads to ascertain the level of work done by men of the State’s environmental Task Force, who had gone earlier to clean up the illegal structures built on the right of way.

Satisfied Sanwo-Olu said that government will immediately move in and start work in the area to avoid further encroachment and illegal occupation of the large expanse of land.

Motorists forsee e-problems as e-tolling begins on Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge

Published January 1, 2020
Lekki- Ikoyi link bridge Photo : Feyisayo Popoola Lekki toll gate

As the Lekki Concession Company begins electronic tolling on the Lekki -Ikoyi Link Bridge to ensure free flow of traffic , MAUREEN IHUA - MADUENYI and FEYISAYO POPOOLA capture the expectations of road users and the preparations for the project

More than six years after the opening of the Lekki - Ikoyi Link Bridge in Lagos , motorists and commuters still complain of experiencing heavy traffic on the bridge, despite paying toll fares for using it.

About a fortnight ago , the managers of the tollgate , Lekki Concession Company , announced their decision to go cashless and to introduce an electronic payment system for those using the link bridge . The decision , our correspondents gathered , was also aimed at reducing the persistent gridlock on the bridge.

While some motorists believe the e -tolling initiative is the answer to the gridlock on the link bridge , others think it will compound the problem .

During a visit to the bridge last Saturday, one of our correspondents observed that the atmosphere was calm and some commuters seemed to be excited about the initiative , which is expected to take effect from January 1 , 2020 ( today ).

A motorist , Oluwatosin Ajani , told The PUNCH that he always found it convenient to access his office through the Lekki - Ikoyi link bridge, which also serves as a means of beating the usual traffic congestion at the Lekki tollgate .

Although the toll fare at the link bridge is on the high side, Ajani added , motorists desiring to beat the traffic at the Lekki tollgate do not seem to mind the cost.

“With the introduction of the electronic tolling system , the traffic on the other end will increase . This is because many drivers won’ t get the card , especially if they don ’ t pass through the tollgate regularly , ” he said .

Ajani also noted that the initiative would make the process of payment faster for motorists and it would enable them to spend less time on the link bridge.

Although another motorist , Daniel Erugo , lauded the initiative , he expressed doubt about the ability of the tollgate managers to sustain it.

He said , “ The e - tolling system is not well grounded in Nigeria . I don ’ t know how they intend to do it, but I doubt it will be sustainable.
“ I ’ m not trying to be pessimistic , but this is Nigeria where nothing really works . In a few months or years from now , they will unnecessarily introduce additional fees. ”

Erugo also frowned at what he called the unnecessary struggle on the part of motorists to obtain toll cards. Describing this as discouraging , he said that , even as a resident of Lekki , he had yet to be duly informed about how to switch from paying toll fares in cash to the new cashless system .

“ No one has said anything to me . Does that mean I will not be permitted to pass on January 1 ? Or is it on that day they will start selling and distributing cards , considering the volume of the traffic on that road, ” he added .

An Uber driver , Kolawole Lawanson, said he could be less bothered about the initiative as the link bridge was not his regular route . “

Whichever way this will turn out , Uber should be responsible for getting us the pass, ” he said .
Another motorist , Olaoluwa Lalemi , said , “It is a great idea until the card readers start getting faulty or a dunce decides not to buzz in because he is angry .

“ But in all, I think it’ s a good development. Whoever is not in support of the cashless tolling system can take the other route . It’ s not a do -or - die affair . ”

The Managing Director of the LCC , Yomi Omomuwasan , in an interview with one of our correspondents , said the company had upgraded the list of registered road users and fed it into its newly installed system .

Omomuwasan explained that one payment device would be used for the road and the link bridge, adding that various means of cashless payment , such as the e - TAG , prepaid card , contactless card and payment voucher , had been designed to ensure the smooth passage of road users .

He said , “ This means that , unlike what we have now, different systems of payment will be made available to motorists using the link bridge.

“ We have launched the LCC mobile app that can be used to register to get the e - TAG ; to top up their account without having to visit any of our offices; to pay toll fares without using the card or the voucher or other means of payment and to speak with the customer care service . ”

Omowuwasan also said there was a plan to establish distribution locations so that people would not need to visit the company ’ s offices .
He said the company was already working on the centres , one after the other , beginning from the Lekki area .

“ Eventually, apart from our offices, we will have other locations where people can register. This does not mean that we are increasing the toll fares. The amount of money that people pay will not be affected . It is just that those who used to pay cash will now pay though the established means, ” he said , stressing that last Friday, the LCC had a simulation of the process and got a positive feedback .

“We were able to get people to be inclusive . They used the card and it worked.

“ For the first few days , we expect people to say they are not aware of the policy. So , we have made preloaded vouchers for them until they rectify the process for their subsequent passages, ” he added .

The 1 . 358- kilometre Lekki- Ikoyi Link Bridge was constructed by Julius Berger and completed in 2013 to link Lekki Phase 1 and Ikoyi over the Five Cowries Creek .

As part of the activities to mark the 2013 Democracy Day, the then Governor of Lagos State , Babatunde Fashola, had declared the bridge open , saying that it would reduce travel time for people commuting between Ikoyi and Lekki Phase 1 .

Fashola also announced the tolling on the bridge , a decision that had been criticised by many Nigerians , including members of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Human rights lawyer , Mr Ebun Adegboruwa , told The PUNCH that his earlier objection of tolling on the bridge remained unchanged .

He said the cashless tolling system that is about to be introduced would end up being misused .
Adegobruwa said , “It will also not address the problem confronting people in that area . It was totally wrong to conceive a tolling bridge to land within a metropolis , in the first place. it is inappropriate.

“ The bridge should not attract tolls at all. As of today , the collection of toll on that bridge is illegal . In 2014 , the Federal High Court declared it illegal . The judgment subsists till now . The Lagos State Government claimed to have appealed against it, but has not done anything in respect of the appeal . ”

According to Adegboruwa , a court judgment , which declared the collection of toll illegal , remains so .

“ I believe by now it should be clear to us that there is no need tolling that bridge, since it was built with taxpayers ’ money. No loan is involved and the Lagos State Government did not accept any aid from any international organisation .

“ I don ’ t see any reason why a landlord should build a house and be made to pay to live in that house . The kind of traffic we go through every day in that place cannot be eliminated by electronic tolling, ” he said .

He said the best way to address traffic in the area would be for the Lagos State Government to cancel the idea of toll on the bridge and allow vehicles to move freely on the bridge and the adjoining roads .

The electronic tolling systems are not new. They have existed since tolling started on the expressway and on the bridge. What is different is the decision not to accept cash on the bridge.

Lekki Masterplan Project: Construction of regional road begins May despite encroachment ― Sanwo-Olu
ON MARCH 14, 20206:52 PMIN NEWS

By Olasunkanmi Akoni

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Saturday, expressed determination of his administration to embark on the proposed Regional Road in Lekki-Ajah axis in Eti-Osa Local Government Area, despite, encroachment on the right of way.

Sanwo-Olu, however, disclosed that plans have concluded to commence its construction before the month of May this year.

The governor who disclosed this while on inspection tour of the Regional Road alignment said the government would remove the contraventions to give way for the construction of the road.

He said there was the need to remodel the design and alignment for the road in order to reclaim the right-of-way already encroached on by property developers along the corridor.

The Governor accompanied on the tour by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako, Special Adviser on Works and Infrastructure, Mrs. Aramide Adeyoye, among others said the road is very strategic.

He stressed that it was the second time he would be going round the alignment of the 9.3 kilometre-long, 45 metres wide road, which he described as strategic in the implementation of Lekki Masterplan Development.

Sanwo-Olu said the road would not only bring relief to traffic for commuters, motorists, plying axis, but improve quality of life for residents of the area.

According to him: “This is the second time in two months that we are going round the alignment of Regional Road. What it means is that we are getting close to the reality of developing this corridor, which starts from somewhere close to Victoria Garden City (VGC) and terminates at Freedom Road in Lekki.

“The road, which is parallel to Lekki-Epe Expressway, is strategic for us in our Lekki Masterplan Development programme. While we went round the alignment, we discovered that there are so many estates behind this place. Construction of Regional Road will not only give relief, but it would also enhance movement and improve quality of life for our people.

“There has been encroachment on the identified right-of-way. What we are doing now is to see how to resolve all these issues before we go into final tendering process to pick the would-be contractor for the job.”

Sanwo-Olu said much of the right-of-way for the proposed road remained intact from encroachment, adding that properties built within the road alignment would be pulled down to allow the construction.

He added that government would be meeting with the owners of the affected properties to discuss relocation plan.

He said: “We want the people to know that this Regional Road is part of the development that will ease the Fourth Mainland Bridge we will be constructing. It is strategic because it would ease pressure off the Lekki-Epe Expressway. In future, there is another highway that will extend from Freedom Road to Ilubrin and Third Mainland Bridge. We are hoping that before our first anniversary in office, the contractor would have moved to site for the construction of the Regional Road
