[b]187 inmates escape from Enugu prisons - One killed, 36 raped Jude Ossai, Enugu - 04.06.2009 FEARS have gripped residents of Enugu as about 187 inmates of Enugu Prisons, including those standing trial for armed robbery and other serious criminal offences, escaped in a major jailbreak in the early hours of Wednesday. One of the inmates was said to have been killed in the incident while 36 female prisoners were reportedly stripped naked before being raped by the fleeing prisoners. Nigerian Tribune investigation revealed that the Awaiting Trial members numbering about 760, were said to have facilitated the jailbreak which spread to all the cells/wards in the prison. It was learnt that an Enugu-based oil magnate and Chairman of Nowas Group, Dr. Ignatius Nnubia and his manager, Emma Okoli, who were remanded in the prison for their alleged involvement in the kidnap of Dr. Francis Edemobi, younger brother of the Minister of Information, Professor Dora Akunyili, narrowly escaped death in the incident as some among the fleeing inmates reportedly forced their way into their cells to attack them but were prevented by other inmates. Sources close to the prisons said that the ATM in G-Ward started the jailbreak at about 1.30 a.m. on Tuesday night when they broke the ceiling of the ward. The jailbreakers were said to have moved to the E and M Wards, also occupied by the Awaiting Trial members and forced the gate open thus increasing their number as they marched to other wards, including Ward D and the Condemned Criminals (CC) Ward. The ringleaders were, however, disappointed when the officials and inmates of Ward D and the CC Ward resisted them, saying they were not ready to engage the government in a battle since they were sure that the fleeing inmates would be apprehended in the long run. Some of the inmates climbed onto the roof and jumped into the warders’ office and threatened to kill any of them that raised the alarm. They held the warders, who had not managed to escape, hostage. The escaping inmates then went to the main entrance gate and forced it open. Many of the inmates surged through the gate and guards outside the prison reportedly fired several shots into the air to scare them. While assessing the extent of damage done during the incident, the Comptroller-General of Prisons, Olushola Ogundipe explained that the cause of the incident might not be unconnected with the prison inmates’ agitation against alleged slow pace of judicial process in the state. The Comptroller-General, however, dismissed the allegation, saying the chief judge of Enugu State had been trying his best to decongest prisons. He recalled that on May 25 and 26, the chief judge visited Nsukka and Enugu prisons where he treated some cases on the spot. Meanwhile, no fewer than three inmates have been hospitalised following injuries they sustained while a good number of the escapees were re-arrested by security operatives. Delayed justice is denied justice. Jailbreaks are precipitated by desperation. People wait for trial forever in this country sometimes for offenses that wouldn't get more than a few months' jail term. |
