Re: Computer Enginnering Or Computer Science by Williamso(m): 6:45pm On Jan 04, 2016
The greatest misconception many people have is that Computer Science is all about programming. This could not be further from the truth. Computer Science is more about Algorithms, Information Systems, Strategic Networking, Software Engineering/Architecture, etc... while Computer Engineering is more concerned about hardware (Some people liken it to Elect/elect Engineering). I don't know which is more lucrative, but will advise you to follow your passion

And if programming is the only reason you wish to switch, by all means do not. Take online programming courses as these will serve you better. You can even take professional programs like OCP. Heck, I know graduates of Economics, Geology and even Law who are bad-ass programmers... smiley

Dude.... Computer Engineering offers more...

Probably your school is d problem(no offence ).... cos Ama Computer Engineering student and I know d diff.... have got pals in Computer science.... D only thing dey specialise mostly in is programming... though, dey do a few hardware like courses...

Computer Engineering offers both courses in Electrical/ Electronics Engineering and Computer Science....

So to be complete, I suggest u do Engineering.... cos It covers a whole lot of Hardware and Software...

But d choice is still yours sha... All na beta course...

Computer engineering is more preferable to computer science, because you will have a quality knowledge of repairing the computer weller, even though you do not get a job immediately you finish your serving you can open a shop and begin to manage over there.

My bro, pls go for C.E if u have d oppotunity, u will neva understand d advantages of C.E until u graduated. Also, let me remind u dat most of the pple that studied c.sc found themselves there as a result of circumstance, most of them wanted any engineering couse. as a compt engr, u have wider opportunity in d labour market....let me also call ur attention to an errorr when someone said u can do masters in C.E with a first degree in csc without PGD, my bro, dats a false information, except if u graduate with first class, however, most schools will not accept such...THINK TWICE AND MAKE D RIGHT CHOICE, d labour market is not smiling

Computer engineering has nothing much to do with computer science. Computer engineering is the electronic side of electrical engineering, it's more of hardware but software programming is also part of the curriculum.

If you want to learn programming, you can do that by getting programming books, it needs no prerequisite, no degree....anyone with enough determination anyone can program.

Thanks.

Not saying our education is bad here, but the curriculum is a bit outdated, though I don't know about private Universities,

Back to the topic it doesn't matter Wether you go for csc or C.Eng you,ll still be almost clueless after graduating except you are really passionate about learning CSc or Some aspects of C engine on your own. Most CS grads can't even solve basic software engineering problems, now I'm not talking about coding, just basic CS problems, but you can't really blame them, their foundation is just poor, because they were not taught algorithms and data structures very well, if we have solid education here, I will advise you go for Computer science, because there are so many emerging technologies now like NFV that uses Openstack, SDN, IOT even AI, Deep Learning, with all this Good software engineers will always be in demand,in short if you are a good software engineer you can never be out of job.

But with poor education it doesn't matter what you study, you are still going to be a paper grad except you are passionate about it, and being passionate about it means learning on your own.
Very good comment.

For Nigeria, study Computer Engineering. We need more engineers today than we need scientists. Before anybody jumps on me, let me explain:

Computer Science, for the most part, tends to address issues that won't be available to the public for 10-20 years: networking, communication, algorithms, big data, database - all these were researched and investigated in the 50s, 60s, but only started being used practically in the 70s' 80's and 90's. These take a long time, and need deep pockets to fund.

On the other hand, Computer Engineering tends to address immediate needs. It was computer engineers who took the theories and ideas from CS research, and turned them into actual embedded systems and computers that people use, as the technologies became more mature and mainstream. I feel a Computer Engineer would have a lot more to do and contribute to our society at this stage in our development. If you wanted to create an embedded system for mobile payments, gate openers, hospital record keeping, whatever, you're likely to need the skills of a computer engineer.

In summary, they are both worthy pursuits, and you can even study both, but IMHO, a computer engineer can create a lot of things that will have immediate practical use in Nigeria, which translates to customers who will pay; a computer scientist's products won't likely have immediate customers in Nigeria, today. Of course, as long as you expose yourself to all aspects of technology (scientist and engineer), none of this distinction matters

I imagine Iroko, Paga, Google and Microsoft have more Computer Scientists, while Solynta, Omatek, Apple and Samsung may have more use for Computer (and Electrical) Engineers.

you have succeeded in confusing most people with your detailed analysis on the on the pros and cons in nigeria and as nigeria, luckily i wasn't among the confused.. grin cheesy

Computer Engineering is the thing. You're still in the early stages there. When you get to finals, you'd look back and laugh off CS. With CE, in programminf you are going to do C, Java, Assembly, C++ and overall Software Development and Engineering. With CS, its Pascal, Q basic, Java and some C++ maybe. You can always pick whatever yo wanna learn later on. I'm a 400L CE student and can compete with both Electrical/Electronics Eng and CS. CE is a combo of great overlaps of both and the things that matters and bridges it together. You can always learn what you want in IT.... I do Web/Mobile Applications development and Software Dev better than most CS students I've met.

Let me answer your question in ds way, i studied computer science from FUT Minna and i am a programmer, am enjoying what m doing, i got introduced to programming from my course in computer science, but what else did i get beyond introduction? Nothing? At different points in time i appreciate studying computer science, and at different times i regretted not studying computer engineering? I appreciated studying computer, science mainly because i got introduced to programming through, if i had studied something else and still get d introduction i got, i would have still ended up as a programmer which i am now. But regretted not studying computer engineering because often times, i really wish i could develop and program integrated circuit and hardware controllers, these are my limits, what if i had studied computer engineering and still ended up as a programmer, wouldn't that have been a plus to me? Although with your passion in programming, u will have the space and boost to explore the world of programming in computer science than in computer engineering, but the most important part is how much time you put into developing your programming skills
Re: Computer Enginnering Or Computer Science by abbey621(m): 7:42pm On Jan 04, 2016
The problem you have is not your course of study but your limited mind. There's no such thing as computer science or computer engineering in the real world! Companies expect you to specialize in one or two areas and have limited knowledge of the rest. For example: With Computer Science you can either specialize in Networking, Programming or Security but are expected to have knowledge of Database administration, Data structures and Algorithms and so on. A computer Engineer basically designs hardware and circuitry, they can also build software but the testing and integrity of the software is primarily done by someone with a computer science background. Engineers are heavily geared towards hardware and circuitry something computer scientists rarely specialize in. A computer scientist might have little to no knowledge of diodes and motherboard circuitry but heavy knowledge of software architecture and interpolation. So in short, either field is an awesome choice, in Nigeria what you study rarely matters as we have Computer Scientists working in Engineering departments and Engineers writing codes and testing software.

my brother, I am also a graduate of the same school you are that is OOU, and the same course you are studying that is computer engineering, I am currently working with my HND in Electrical engineering from the polytechnic and as much as am trying to switch over to IT I am still loving what am doing. I only said all that to let you know I know the field and am a bit qualified to give you a piece of advice. From experience, excelling in IT doesn't matter which course you study in school, HOWEVER, YOU NEED TO NOTE THAT IF YOU DONT STUDY EITHER ENGINEERING OR COMP SCI, IT MIGHT BE DIFFICULT TO REALLY GET JOBS AND GROW IN IT ESPECIALLY NETWORKING AND TELECOMS JOBS.
I had been saying and still continue to say that its not what you learn in school that you use to either work or do business after school, its what you learn yourself and how you develop yourself both during and after school, if you have passion for coding, you have no problems in fact you are on your way, if you have money pursue your dreams via all these ICT schools around e.g aptech, nit etc, and use google effectively to your advantage.
I can assure you that engineering Degree has more respect in this country than science degrees am talking from what I had gone through and what I had seen my friends gone through as well.
However, above all like I use to say the ball is always in your court, just know what you want and pursue it.
take care.

What's the point of sticking with a course of study in which you aren't really interested? Most of the people here telling you to stick to computer engineering have no idea what they're talking about - computer science is not about learning particular databases, networking technologies or programming languages, but about fundamental concepts such as analysis of algorithms, complexity theory, operating systems, artificial intelligence, distributed computing, etc. In other words, instead of picking up trendy technologies that will be obsolete within a few years of your graduation, you learn concepts which are timeless and will be helpful to you throughout your career.

Even if you allow career concerns to outweigh your personal preferences, you have to ask yourself: just how many real opportunities are there in Nigeria for a computer engineer? Where will you get to design ASICs, work on VLSI or do any of the other cool jobs which require a computer engineering degree? Where are the likes of Intel, AMD and Nvidia to offer you a job which will use your skills? You don't need a degree in anything to tinker about with PC hardware, to build made-to-order PCs, or even to play with devices like the Raspberry PI, so that can't be the reason to say you'll stick with computer engineering. At least with a CS degree you have the possibility of working remotely, or benefiting from outsourcing work.
