Why Buhari Budgeted N39 billion for Lai Mohammed

In a bid to launder his already battered image, President Muhammadu Buhari has allocated a whooping sum of N39 billion in the 2016 budget to the Ministry of Information and Culture, a sum higher than the paltry N29 billion allocated to the Ministry of Agriculture.

This is a direct inverse of the 2015 budget, where Former President Goodluck Jonathan allocated the sum of N23 billion to Ministry of Information and N39 billion to the Agriculture Ministry.

The meager allocation to the Agriculture ministry has left political stakeholders wondering if the present administration aims at diversifying the economy or thriving on propaganda.

Buhari had in August, 2015 stated that Nigerians must stop paying lip service to agriculture, as crude oil and gas exports will no longer be sufficient as the country’s major revenue earner.

“It’s time to go back to the land. We must face the reality that the petroleum we had depended on for so long will no longer suffice. We campaigned heavily on agriculture, and we are ready to assist as many want to go into agricultural ventures,’’ Buhari stated.

However investigations by Post Nigeria revealed that Buhari’s words did not match his action following the lean budgetary provision for Agriculture.

A highly placed source told Post Nigeria that “the huge allocation to the ministry of information was intentional and aimed at greasing the government’s propaganda machineries following the unprecedented bashing it had received in the last 7 months. Hence Lai Mohammed work is cut out for him as he was given a target.”

The source added; “it is unfortunate that the ministry of information has more budgetary allocation than Ministries of Agriculture, Mines and Steel Development.”

Political observers have alleged that the allocation of N39 billion to the Ministry of Information which is headed by a man known for propaganda at the expense of agriculture, speaks volumes.

Since his assumption into office, Mohammed has come under heavy media attack for embarking on endless propaganda in defense of every action taken by the Buhari administration. Sources say his appointment was necessitated by the lax attitude of the president’s spokesmen, Garba Shehu and Femi Adesina.

The latest propaganda by Mohammed was the declaration that the war against insurgency had been won and that the Nigerian Army had met the December 2015 deadline given to them by Buhari to defeat Boko Haram.

At the wake of the multiple bomb explosion and attack, many Nigerians have described the Information Minister comment as “reckless and irresponsible.”

This government is a joke. How can Info ministry have more budget allocation than Agriculture. This is probably why we don't hear anything from agric dept as we used to during Adesina era.

Oil is becoming useless and somebody is not thinking alone that coast ? Unbelievable.

As much as I try to give them chance, this govt keeps giving me reasons to write them off. Soo cuntural dance for 365 days of the year is more profitable than agriculture ? We are still struggling to believe about the 1.7B feeding allocation and now this. By the way, why is budget allocations shrouded in secrecy. Nigerians need to know where every damn money will be spent.

u should have noticed that Ministry of Agriculture is one Ministry, while Ministry of Information and Culture, are two ministries with government agencies under it,that requires more recurrent expend due to staff. The major issue is when we lock our hearts and decide to hate an individual,we see everything from a particular light

What you ignorantly and unintelligent quoted was recurrent expenditure and not capital expenditures

Capital expenditure for Agriculture is N47 billion

Capital expenditure for Info and culture is meager and negligible N6 billion

The recurrent you dubiously quoted was for ministry workers salaries..

Infor and Culture total = N39 billion recurrent + N6 billion capital = N45 billion

Agric recurrent N30 billion recurrent + N47 billion capital = N77.7 billion

Either learn how to count or confine your deceptive and ipob arithmetic to your fellow wailers..

Exactly. From the first paragraph, you can see the 'neutrality' of the report!
